Printed Circuit Board
The signals on this ASIC might act like transmission lines.
Transmission line impedance matching is a critical part of any PCB
design layout to ensure signal integrity.
Write down the characteristic impedance of a transmission line in terms
of Zin & Zo (and explain the terms used) and justify:
a. In case of a very long transmission line, Zin = Z0
b. In case of a very short transmission line (compared to the
wavelength), Zin = ZL.
c. What is the need for matching the source and the load
impedance?
Q. A transmission line has the primary line constants- RLGC parameters:
3 R=100Ω/m, L=80 nH/m, G=1.6 S/m, and C=200 pF/m. Apply
Consider a traveling wave at 2 GHz on the line. 4 (BT#03)
- Calculate the secondary line constants Z0 (characteristic
impedance) & γ (propagation constant) and hence compute the
attenuation constant and the phase constant.
- Calculate the phase velocity and the group velocity.
Q. An air line (lossless line) has a characteristic impedance of 75 Ω and a
4 phase constant of 3 rad/m at 100 MHz. Calculate the inductance and the Apply
capacitance per meter of the line. 4 (BT#03)
Hint: Air line can be regarded as a lossless line (R = G =0 & α = 0)
Answer: C = 63.65 pF/m and L = 358 nH/m
Q. Interpret the equations for the instantaneous voltage and current waves Analyze

+ −α𝑧 − α𝑧
𝑉(𝑧, 𝑡) = 𝑉0 𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑠(ω𝑡 − β𝑧) + 𝑉0 𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑠(ω𝑡 + β𝑧)
+ −
𝑉0 −α𝑧 𝑉0 α𝑧
𝐼(𝑧, 𝑡) = 𝑍0
𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑠(ω𝑡 − β𝑧) + 𝑍0

𝑉(𝑙') = 120𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑠(10 𝑡 + 2𝑙') + 60𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑠(10 𝑡 − 2𝑙')
(BT#03)
where l’ is the distance from the load.
If ZL = 300 Ω, find α and β.
Hint: Compare with equation given above.
Answer: α = 0.0025 N/m and β = 2 rad/m
