The word “Dance” comes from an Old German word Danson which means “to
stretch’. All dancing is made up of stretching and relaxing.
Dance Defines…
As an art form that generally refers to movement of the body, usually
rhythmic and music, used as a form of expression, social interaction or
presented in a spiritual or performance setting.
As an art that uses non-verbal movement in an ordinary way to create
a form, order, or statement.
As movement that transcends function and becomes communication.
Each dance elements contains movement concepts that make specific
and distinctive. In order to create and expressive and meaning dance,
the dance artist (or choreographer) has to make decisions about the
look, flow and timing of the movements, drawing on the broad range of
visual designs, qualities of emotion, and rhythm that are possible in
movement . These elements help a dance artist discover movements
which are expressive and unique. These three areas known as:
1. Space- encompasses the overall design of movement- where it
takes place in the space, as well as its size and shape.
2. Energy (also called Force) involves the flow of motion – how
movement is animated by kinetic energy in distinctive ways.
3. Time – includes how fast or slows of the movement
ELEMENTS OF SPACE
-REFERS TO ALL THE OVER ALL DESIGN OF MOVEMENT
-BOTH shapes bodies make, and how the performing space is filled
with bodies in motion
1. Size describes the range of shapes and movements from small to
big.
2. Level describes how high or low movement takes place in relation
to the ground.
3. Shape refers to the designs the body makes in the space.
4. Directions refer to both the directions of the body and the
directions in the space.
5. Pathway refers to the design of the path made by body arts or
the whole body while travelling through space.
6. Relationships describe our proximity to people and things.
Students can move near
ELEMENTS OF ENERGY
(Also known a force) gives movement varying degrees of expressive
intensity by how it is released in motion.
1. Force is the amount of energy expended in the movement. It can
be strong, as exhibited in the punch, or light , as expressed in a
floating movement.(e.g. strong or weak energy)
2. Weight reflects our relationship to gravity. (e.g. heavy or light
movements)
3. Quality refers to the flow of energy in movement. (e.g. smooth,
sharp or swing).
4. Stillness does not move but it’s still filled with energy. Active
stillness is the energy we use when engaging in freeze action.
5. Passive stillness refers to the absence of motion and animating
energy. Letting all the energy drain out of the body while either
sitting or lying down and let the students relax and refocus their
energy.
ELEMENTS OF TIME
Refers to how fast or slow movement is, and how it unfolds
rhythmically.
1. Speed is like tempo in music and refers to the rate at which
movements occur.(e.g. slow, fast, accelerate and decelerate)
2. Rhythm is the underlying pattern that gives order to music
and dance.

Dance is an integral part of Filipino culture that dates to the period before
Ferdinand Magellan stepped foot in the Philippines. The traditional dances of the
Filipinos are vibrant and colorful, capturing the history of the archipelago.
Before the Spanish various tribes were scattered across the more than 7,000
islands, each with its own unique traditions and dances. The Igorot tribes lived in
the mountains of Luzon; a handful of these tribes still resisted Spanish colonization.
Many of the dances have been handed down through the generations. Dance
expresses this tribe’s love of nature and gratitude to the gods. To imitate the
wonders of nature, dancers often swoop their arms like birds and stomp their feet to
represent the rumbling of the Earth. However, many other tribes in other regions
are disappearing, and only a few of their dances survive. Thanksgiving, worship and
prayers for a bountiful harvest mark the style of these dances.
Voyage to Mindanao In the 12th century, traders, and seafarers came to
the Philippines long before the Spanish, bringing the Islamic faith with
them. The inhabitants of the southern region into the fabric of their
existing culture. The dances of the Muslims, known as Moros, are
alluring and colorful. Female dancers wear costumes studded with
jewels, while male dancers brandish swords and shield. The Moros use
languid arm movements to imitate the world around them such as the
wind, the sea and the fish. Each dance is punctuated by the haunting
sounds of the kulintangan, a set of small gongs. Like the Igorots, the
Moros were able to resist Spanish rule, which is why many of their
dances continue to flourish.
Maria Clara –in 1521, Ferdinand Magellan came to the archipelago,
signaling the start of Spanish colonization. However, the Spanish didn’t
get a foothold in the Philippines until 1565. Three centuries of Spanish
rule left an imprint on the Filipinos. Many of them were converted to
Catholicism and forced to take Spanish surnames.
During this period, Western culture spread through the islands,
including such Western dances and the waltz, fandango and polka.
With a little Filipino flare, they quickly became part of the culture. This
“new” style of dance was named Maria Clara after the tragic character
in Jose Rizals novel “Noli Me Tangere”.
Barrio Fiesta – after toiling in the rice paddies, countryside farmers
would gather to sing and dance. These dances revolve around
everyday items,. such as glasses, candles, benches, hats and bamboo
poles. Because the dances are a celebration, they are often referred to
as a “barrio fiesta”. One of the more complicated dances is pandanggo
a ilaw, meaning “dance of lights”, which imitates wandering fireflies.
To accomplish the illusion, women delicately balance three “tinghoy”’
or oil lamps, on their heads and palms.
The National Dance- Tinikling, the national dance, is considered the
oldest of the Philippine folk dances. The dance, which comes from the
countryside, takes its name and movement from the “Tinikling” bird as
it roams between grass steams, crushes tree branches and avoids
traps set by farmers. Dancers skip gracefully back and forth while
trying to avoid getting their feet caught by two bamboo poles.
