ACTIVITY 1 | ICT and Its Applications to

Mankind GE ELECT 3 – Living in the IT Era

INTRODUCTION

Man has always dreamed of ways to do things better, cheaper, and faster. There has been a
natural progression, although interrupted at times by periods of chaos, towards better and more
useful tools. One such tool that has fascinated man is the computer.

In the development of the computer, the greatest progress has been made during the last
200 years. Some scientists believe that the progress during the next 20 years will equal or even
surpass the achievements in the last few decades.

The growth of information and communication technologies (ICT) has a significant potential
to change economies and societies in a number of ways, including by lowering information and
transaction costs, developing new collaborative models to increase worker efficiency,
encouraging innovation, and enhancing access to basic services and education. Consumers'
daily lives, the production of goods and services, as well as work done in the public sector, all
seem to be influenced by innovation.

OBJECTIVE

After going through the tasks, students are expected to attain an understanding of how
information and communication technologies are felt in all walks of life and how it affects the way
people think, behave, act, interact, etc., particularly in the Digital Era.

KEY CONCEPTS

Information and communication technologies (ICT) are a broad category of technical

resources and techniques used to create, transfer, store, share, and exchange information.
Computers, the Internet (websites, blogs, and emails), live broadcasting media (radio, television,
and webcasting), recorded broadcasting media (podcasting, audio and video players, and
storage devices), and telephony (fixed or mobile, satellite, visio/video-conferencing, etc.) are
some of these technological resources.

A hierarchy of ICT was developed by Zuppo in 2012, with each level of the hierarchy
sharing some characteristics with the others in terms of their relation to technologies that
promote the flow of information and various forms of electronically mediated interactions.

The use of communication and technology standards to access information in various

domains while taking into account societal conditions and various applications is depicted in a
hierarchical model of ICT.

There is a new development in computerization/digitization which is bound to have far

reaching effects on society, and it is this: ICT is no longer being confined to the realm of the
scientific, military, big businesses, or academic circles. ICT is now becoming an everyday tool of
the ordinary educated person, that is, it is becoming an everyday tool that is used not only in the
offices, but in homes as well.

This new development is being made possible by the proliferation of inexpensive but
high quality computers and ICT tools/devices.

The New Developments of ICT and Their Effects on Society

1. On Education. ICTs are widely used in education as a tool and as a support. Teachers
prepare their lecture notes and presentations on computers. Computers are used to
create computer-based training materials, deliver remote learning via e-learning
software, and run online exams. Researchers use ICT to have quick access to
conference and publication details and to provide the study materials to a global
audience.

2. On Entertainment. The entertainment business has been significantly impacted by ICTs.

The user can download and watch movies, play games, chat, buy movie tickets online,
utilize multimedia to create movies with sound and visual effects, and more. People can
also listen to music, download and share music, make music with computers, etc.

3. On Sports. Computers and other digital devices can be used to play games (e.g., chess,
tennis, and e-sports), develop games, and watch games. They can also be used to view
scores and improve games. Additionally, they are employed in the training of athletes
and players.

4. On Advertising. ICT is a potent form of advertising. A product review by a separate

consumer can be uploaded, along with advertisements that can be seen on other
websites and emails that can be sent electronically. Computers are also used to design
advertisements that have both visual and aural effects. Computers are a medium that
allows for worldwide ad viewing for the advertisers. Nearly all businesses include web
advertising as a key component of their marketing strategies.

5. On Medicine. ICT-driven tools and equipment are used by medical researchers and
practitioners to acquire information on new developments in medical research or to solicit
opinions from experts in the field around the world. Computers are used to store the
patients' medical histories. ICTs are also a crucial component of many types of high-tech
medical devices, including MRI, CAT, and ultrasound scanners. Medical surgeons can
also get help from computers during difficult surgical procedures like laparoscopic
surgeries, etc.

6. On Science and Engineering. Computers are used by scientists and engineers to

execute difficult scientific calculations, to design and create drawings using CAD/CAM
software, and to simulate and test the designs. Computers are used to visualize 3D
objects, store complicated data, and conduct sophisticated calculations. Without ICT,
complex scientific applications such as rocket launch, space exploration, etc. are not
possible.

7. On Government. To run its own operations and for e-governance, the government uses
ICT. Information for customers is available on the websites of the various government
agencies. Computers are utilized for a variety of tax-related tasks, including the filing of
income tax returns, paying taxes, submitting water and electric bills online, and
accessing information on land records. Computerized fingerprint matching and other
methods are used by the police department to find criminals.

8. On Personal. ICTs are becoming a standard component of recurrent expenditure. People
use computers at home for a variety of activities, including gaming, keeping track of
household finances, talking online with friends and family, paying bills, learning, and
other activities. Washing machines, smart TVs, food processors, home theaters, security
equipment, and other household appliances all contain embedded microprocessors.

TASKS

In today's world wherever we go we are surrounded by numerous sorts of ICTs. With a

mouse click, we can utilize them to send or receive data from anywhere in the world. Even now,
we may use our computers to send emails, play games, watch television, listen to music, work
on business data, view video lectures, and perform a plethora of other tasks. Today's ICT goods
and services come in a wide variety of forms.

Watch as Jordan Nguyen and David Ellis discuss the ways in which technology is
redefining humanity and the intended and unforeseen effects of information and communication
technologies, respectively. The links are provided below.

1. What development has made it possible for ICT to become an everyday tool of the ordinary
educated person?

Ans:
The development that made it possible for ICT to become an everyday tool of the ordinary
educated person is the invention of smartphones. Smartphones created a new way of
communicating, and developers of ICT tools, saw the opportunity to expand their range. Just
like Facebook, it became more popular when more smartphones were being sold. With this
comes the idea of Facebook to expand to another ICT tool, Instagram.

2. Identify at least three ICT tool/hardware that are essential to your life. Why do you think it
always forms a part of your everyday routine?

Ans:

3 ICT tools/hardware that are essential to me are, smartphone, laptop and Messenger. It has
become a part of my everyday life because of the current situation of the education in
Philippines, classes are done in an online setting. And with my responsibilities I always must
be online if my classmates have a question or concern.
