Health And Safety Policy

Policy Statement

Safaricom is committed to the promotion and maintenance of a healthy and secure work
environment for its employees, customers and visitors to its premises.

It is Safaricom’s policy to provide and maintain a working environment that is safe and without
risk to health and to ensure that there are adequate systems and methods of work for our
activities.

Policy Objectives
The objective of this policy is to:
ƒ Create and maintain employee awareness of their responsibility for their health and safety.
ƒ Provide and maintain safety measures at the work place in order to prevent work related
ill-health and accidents.

Policy Principles

Safety at Work
Employees are expected to exercise reasonable care and attention and to avoid taking any
undue risk which might lead to an accident or injury to yourself or others. Employees found to
have recklessly or intentionally endangered themselves or others may be subject to the
company disciplinary procedure.

Fire Marshalls
The company has trained fire marshals. There will be a fire marshall/s on every floor and in all
Safaricom premises who will be charged with the responsibility of coordinating drills, providing
first aid etc.

Fire Drills
It is company policy that fire drills are conducted every quarter in all Safaricom premises. The
purpose of these drills is to assess the readiness of staff and our contracted companies to
respond in emergency situations.

Evacuation
In an emergency situation i.e. fire or bomb threat, all employees, customers, suppliers and all
persons in the premises should evacuate the premises as directed by the fire marshals. A
physical headcount should be conducted by the fire marshalls and managers after the
evacuation to ensure that all persons are accounted for.

Health & Safety Inspections/Regulations

Signage
Health and Safety signages will be posted and/or placed in areas where there is potential risk
of Health and Safety to staff

Security Advisories
It is Safaricom’s policy to provide security advisories through the intranet to forewarn staff of
any issues arising that would jeopardize their safety e.g. advisories on riots, demonstrations,
political unrest etc

Training
Safaricom will provide training to all fire marshals who comprise all the departments of
Safaricom. They will provide support during fire drills, emergencies and also provide first aid to
injured staff.

Fire Equipment
Fire fighting equipment will be provided in all Safaricom premises. Instructions on operating
this equipment will be provided as part of the training for the fire marshals.

Accident at Work Place


It is a Company requirement that any accidents resulting in personal injury are recorded in an
accident book and escalated to HR Reward section. You should therefore contact the
Employee Services Manager or the fire marshall on your floor or premises in the event that any
personal injury occurs.

Suspicious Packages
In the event that any suspicious packages, items etc are discovered within Safaricom premises,
security should be contacted immediately via the security helpdesk on telephone number
4273997/8.

First Aid
All Safaricom premises will have a first aid kit equipped with bandages, liniments etc.
Medicines, such as over the counter drugs will not be provided for in the first aid kits and have
to be accessed directly by the staff member through pharmaceutical outlets.

Responsibility
The Facilities and Security Department are responsible for the Health and Safety of staff in
Safaricom by coordinating activities of Fire Marshals and maintaining a healthy and Safe
environment within Safaricom facilities.

HR Reward will facilitate through Group Accident cover any Health and Safety incidences that
may occur.

Amendments
Changes to this policy will be approved by the EXCO and communicated to staff.

Effective Date
This policy is effective 1st April 2006.
