Welcome to the Mathematics 10 Self-Learning Module11 on Problem Solving on Permutation and Combination!
In the previous discussions, we learned about the definition of permutation and combination and when to use it. In
this lesson, your understanding of the topic will be deepened. You will apply your prior knowledge in solving
problems involving permutations and combinations. Enough examples and exercises are presented to facilitate
learning.
Directions: Solve the following problems. Show the complete solution in your Math notebook.
1. Out of 5 mathematicians and 7 engineers, a committee consisting of 2 mathematicians and 3 engineers is to
be formed. In how many ways can this be done if one particular engineer must be in the committee?
2. In a contest, there are 24 ways to choose the winners of the champion, the 1st runner-up, and the 2nd
runner-up. How many contestants are there?
3. In how many ways can the letters in “MATH IS FUN” be arranged if the first and the last letter must be
vowels?
4. In a department store, 8 jackets of different styles need to be displayed. In how many ways can the 8 jackets
be hung on a circular rack?
5. How many quadrilaterals can be formed from 10 points such that no three points are collinear?
6. How many 4-digit numbers that are divisible by 10 can be formed from the numbers 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 0 such that
repetitions of the number are not allowed?
7. In the ‘Balik-Probinsya Project’, there are 12 standbys who hope to get on their flight to their respective
provinces, but only 6 seats are available on the plane. How many different ways can the 6 people be
selected?
8. Among the 9 contestants, there are 15,120 ways to choose the winners. How many winners were declared?
9. A group of 6 friends is thinking about a summer break trip to Palawan. At least 4 of them should make an
early booking to avail of the group discount flight. How many groups can be formed such that they can avail
of the discount?
10. In how many ways can 3 identical red beads and 5 beads of varying colors be arranged on a string?
11. Suppose the expression 𝑎 3𝑏 2 𝑐 4 is rewritten without exponents. In how many ways can this be done?
