What do we study
ARTS?
Over the years, humans struggle to make sense of the
things happening around them. They continually seek for
answers to the questions about their existence and life.
But as

technology advances, it sometimes makes things more

confusing. Fortunately, ARTS is there to remind us on
the value and beauty life can bring to humans.

“Science educates our minds and hearts while

humanities (arts) educate our feelings and
sensitivities as that we may use our minds without
forgetting that we are human beings.”
Art is experience, and so, there can be no
appreciation of the arts without
experience --- the actual doing of things.
What is ARTS?
• Art is derived from the latin word “ars” meaning “craft”
or “specialized form of skill, like carpentry OR surgery.”

• In the past, art was seen as a way to achieve a specific result

through careful planning and steps. People in ancient times
didn't think of art the way we do now. For them, art was just
about using their hands to make something useful for daily
life.
What is ARTS?
• Today, arts covers those areas of artistic
creativity that seek to communicate beauty
primarily through the sense. Art embraces the
visual arts, literature, music and dance.

ASSUMPTIONS
OF ARTS
ART IS
UNIVERSAL
Art is timeless, spanning generations and
continent through and through

It transcends cultures, races, and civilizations. As

long as human beings exist, art is feasible, alive
and dynamic.

"Art is not good because it is old, but old

because it is beautiful." (Dudley, et al. 1960)
ART IS UNIVERSAL

Art is
timeless.
ART IS UNIVERSAL

Art has been crafted by all people

regardless of its origin, time, place
and it that stayed because it is liked
and enjoy by people continuously.
ART IS NOT
NATURE
Art is man-made. It is a creation of man that may reflect
a profound skillfulness and craftsmanship. It undergoes
process and planning: a result of study and research.

Art is man’s expression of his reception of nature. It is just

an imitation or even appropriation of ideas, thought,
feelings, and emotions that are communicated in creative
and artistic ways.
What we find in nature should not be expected in art.
Movies are not meant to be a direct expression of
reality. The may, according to the moviemaker’s
perception of reality, be a reinterpretation or distortion
of reality
ART IS
INVOLVES
EXPERIENCE
Art is a representation of our experiences. It demands
involvement. The only way to find conviction and
affirmation in art is through immersion to the arts. We
can only appreciate art if we spend time to look at it,
listen to it, tough it and feel its presence

ART ADDRESSES
HUMAN NEEDS
Art addresses needs of people from all over
the world. Through directly functional and indirectly
functional arts, we are provided with a variety of
offerings – comfort, entertainment and education,
which would somehow lead us to self-fulfillment
and satisfaction.
EXAMPLE
Clothing Choice: Explain how selecting your outfit
involves an understanding of color, style, and design, all of
which are aspects of art.
