SECTION B
XVI. COMPREHENSION:
The Monk and the Student
Long ago, a man named Bimbi lived in Palanpur. Bimbi was a lazy man. He was a
teacher who taught little children in the local school. Every afternoon, Bimbi would
have his lunch and fall off to sleep. His students would wait for him to wake up and
teach them their lessons. However, before the lessons could begin, he would eat so
much that he could barely move. The son of a poor villager was a student in the same
school. His name was Adi. One day Adi asked Bimbi, “ Teacher, may I ask you why
you sleep when it’s time for our lesson?”
“My dear child,” said Bimbi without feeling ashamed of himself, “It just seems like I
am asleep. While I seem to be asleep, I am in a meeting with the Buddha. I listen to his
wise teachings. That is why I try to sleep as much as I can.”
One day Adi had to take care of his sick father at home. He could not sleep all night.
When he went to school the next morning, he was tired and sleepy. While Bimbi was
teaching the students, Adi fell asleep. When Bimbi saw Adi asleep, he lost his temper.
He started screaming “ How dare you sleep while I teach?”
“Teacher,” said Adi, “It just seemed that I was asleep. While my eyes were closed, I
was with the Buddha. I was listening to his wise words.” “And what did the all-
powerful Buddha say to you?” asked the teacher. “The all- powerful Buddha told me:
‘Never in my life have I seen your teacher’,” replied Adi.
