The Future in Gen Z’s Hands: Between Hopes and Challenges

"Great generations are not born during comfortable times, but those who rise to face
challenges and shape the future."

Introduction
Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2012, now holds a crucial role as global
change-makers. Despite their relatively young age, they have become an undeniable
force in various sectors—social, technological, educational, and environmental. As
the first generation to grow up in a fully connected digital era, Gen Z holds immense
potential to lead the world toward a more equitable and innovative future. However,
alongside this potential, they face numerous challenges. Issues such as mental health
crises, job market uncertainty, and environmental threats stand as significant hurdles
in their path.
This essay aims to explore Gen Z’s potential as agents of change, the
challenges they face, and actionable solutions they can implement to build a brighter
future for themselves and the world at large.

Body
Gen Z’s Potential: Resilient and Adaptive Leaders of Tomorrow
Growing up amidst the digital revolution, Gen Z is highly connected and well-
informed. Their ability to adapt to technological and social changes is remarkable.
According to a Pew Research Center survey, nearly 98% of Gen Z has access to
digital devices, using technology to gather information and communicate globally. In
Indonesia, the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) recorded
that almost 90% of youth aged 15 to 24 are internet users, making them the most
digitally connected generation.
Their continuous connection to the outside world equips them with the
capability to amplify social issues. Gen Z utilizes social media platforms to advocate
for causes such as gender equality, human rights, and climate action. Unlike previous
generations, they are not just passive recipients of information but active creators and
drivers of change. Platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok have become
avenues for them to educate society and organize social movements.
However, this potential must be accompanied by readiness to face significant
challenges ahead.

Challenges Testing Gen Z’s Resilience

 Mental Health Crisis
One of the biggest challenges for Gen Z is the rising mental health crisis. Issues like
anxiety, depression, and stress are prevalent within this group. According to the
World Health Organization (WHO), around 1 in 4 adolescents experiences mental
health disorders. In Indonesia, a 2022 report from the Ministry of Health revealed that
over 20% of teenagers suffer from anxiety and depression. Social media pressure, the
pursuit of perfection, and feelings of isolation significantly impact their mental well-
being. The constant pressure to meet societal expectations adds further psychological
burdens.
 Uncertainty in the Job Market
The job market’s rapid transformation, driven by technology, especially automation
and artificial intelligence (AI), poses another challenge for Gen Z. The World
Economic Forum predicts that by 2025, 85 million jobs will be displaced due to
automation, while 97 million new roles will emerge, requiring high-tech skills. Most
existing jobs will undergo significant changes, while new roles will heavily depend on
advanced technology. Gen Z, despite their tech-savviness, must grapple with the
reality of a highly competitive job market that demands ever-evolving skills.
 Escalating Environmental Crisis
Gen Z must also confront the escalating impact of climate change. Global warming,
deforestation, and plastic pollution are pressing issues affecting their future. The
Global Youth Climate Survey (2021) revealed that more than 60% of Gen Z are
anxious about the planet’s future. This concern is not short-term; it reflects a long-
term threat to their quality of life. Without substantial action, climate change may
severely damage ecosystems, deplete natural resources, and disrupt the global
economy.
Strategic Solutions for a Better Future:
1. Leveraging Technology for Social and Environmental Solutions
Gen Z’s mastery of technology can be harnessed to create innovative solutions
addressing both personal and societal challenges. For instance, they can utilize AI to
develop apps that combat climate change or promote gender equality. Moreover, they
can initiate digital campaigns to educate the public on reducing carbon footprints,
sustainability, and environmental protection.

2. Enhancing Skills for a Dynamic Workforce

In response to the evolving job market, Gen Z must continuously update their skills to
remain relevant. Beyond technical expertise, soft skills such as communication,
leadership, and teamwork are essential. Formal education and informal learning
opportunities—like online courses, workshops, and training—can help them broaden
their skill sets. Platforms like LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, and local providers such
as Ruangguru offer valuable learning opportunities to acquire competencies in fields
like data analytics, coding, and technological design.

3. Taking Action in Social and Environmental Movements

It is not enough to voice concerns on social media; Gen Z must take tangible actions.
Participating in social movements can amplify their impact. Movements like “Fridays
for Future” led by Greta Thunberg demonstrate how young people can mobilize
significant change. By joining organizations and social communities, they can
advocate for policies that are environmentally friendly or promote equal rights.

4. Cross-Generational Collaboration for Sustainable Solutions

Gen Z must learn from the experience and wisdom of older generations to tackle
significant issues like climate change and social inequality. Cross-generational
collaboration encourages open dialogue and enables the discovery of more inclusive
and sustainable solutions.

Conclusion
Gen Z holds immense potential to be the world’s change agents in this rapidly
evolving era. With their advanced technological skills, resilience, and strong social
awareness, they are well-positioned to shape a better future. However, realizing this
potential requires overcoming challenges such as mental health issues, job market
shifts, and environmental crises.
To navigate these challenges, they must leverage technology for social and
environmental solutions, continuously develop relevant skills, take tangible actions in
social movements, and collaborate with older generations. The future is not something
to be passively awaited but actively created. As the saying goes, "The best way to
predict the future is to create it." Therefore, Gen Z must embark on their journey
now—not just for themselves but to ensure a sustainable and equitable world for all.
