What is Diabetes

The body doesn’t make or use

insulin correctly
Type 1: the body makes little or no insulin
Type 2: the body makes insulin, but does not respond to
and use insulin as it should. Or it may not make enough
insulin
What is Insulin

Insulin helps move sugar from blood into cells.

Insulin is like a key that unlocks the doors of your cells so
that sugar can get in and used as energy.
Without insulin, extra sugar can’t get into the cells and stays
in the blood
What is a balanced meal?

1. Divide your plate

2. Start with Veggies

3. It’s Carbs!

What is a A1c?

Sugar sticks to
Hemoglobin A for
up to 120 days

High A1c -> higher %

of hemoglobin has
sugar attached
Low A1c -> lower %
of hemoglobin has
sugar attached

The American Diabetes

Association recommends
an A1c of less than 7% for
many nonpregnant adults
without significant low
