NOUN TYPE

1. Compound Nouns

Definition: A noun made up of two or more words (e.g., toothpaste, mother-in-


law).

 Activity: Ask students to combine two words to form compound nouns. For
example:
o Sun + shine = __________
o Tooth + paste = __________
o Match the words in two columns to form compound nouns.

2. Collective Nouns

Definition: A noun that refers to a group of individuals or things (e.g., team,


flock).

 Activity: Provide a list of collective nouns with blanks for students to fill in.
For example:
o A __________ of birds. (Answer: flock)
o A __________ of keys. (Answer: bunch)
o Have students list other examples of collective nouns from their own
experience.

3. Abstract Nouns

Definition: A noun that refers to an idea, quality, or state (e.g., love, bravery,
happiness).

 Activity: Give a list of sentences and ask students to identify the abstract
nouns. For example:

4. Proper Nouns

 Activity: Have students capitalize proper nouns in a sentence. For example:

o john met maria at the park.

5. Common Nouns

Definition: A general name for a person, place, or thing (e.g., city, teacher, dog).

 Activity: Provide sentences with both common and proper nouns, and have
students distinguish between them. For example:
o City: New York, river: Nile
o Underline the common nouns in the sentences provided.
