TO ITALY
Italy is a country located in Western Europe
whose official name is the Italian Republic. It is
a member of the European Union and is
bordered to the north by France, Switzerland,
Austria and Slovenia, to the west by the
Ligurian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
It is one of the world's leading economies and
stands out in textile, naval, automotive and
food production (such as wines and olives). It
has a population of 59 million habitants
distributed in the 20 regions that make up the
country. The majority of the population speaks
Italian.
Landmarks
Leaning Tower of Pisa
The Leaning Tower of Pisa, Europe’s most
distinctive bell tower, took over 200 years
to build. While the creator behind this
architectural marvel is unknown, various
architects throughout the years continue to
brainstorm ways to straighten it out. Until
they do, a picture holding up the diagonal
tower remains the quintessential shot of
any visit to the architectural wonder.
The Colosseum, Rome
Perhaps one of the most famous
landmarks in Italy and an iconic symbol of
the Eternal City is the Colosseum, which
originally opened in 80 A.D. and
showcased gladiator battles and wild
animal brawls. Despite falling into
disrepair, the Colosseum’s ruins are still
one of the best places to see in the world.
Celebrations
Palio di Siena
The Palio is the most important event in
Siena. In the Palio the various Sienese
"contrade" ( districts of the city of Siena)
challenge each other in a passionate horse
race in the heart of the city in the famous
Piazza del Campo. The tradition of horse
racing in Siena dates back to the 6th
century and for the Palio each of the 17
districts have their own emblems and
colours.
Ravello Festival
The Ravello Festival is one of the best-
loved events in Italy, taking the Amalfi
Coast by storm every summer.
Running for around two months, this
festival of music and arts was originally
a tribute to Wagner, following his visit to
the town in the 19th century. Today, it’s
a time-perfected tradition with a
programme of jazz, art shows, dance,
photography and classical concerts.
