C. Discussion
Based on the video you’ve watched, what Ma’am, I think it’s about regular verb
do you think our lesson is for today?
That’s a great observation! Yes, we’ll be
learning about regular verbs today. We’ll
explore what they are, how to use them,
and how to change their form, especially in
the past tense. Let’s get started!
From the verbs or action words that we
mentioned in our activity earlier, what do
you notice about each word? They all end with ‘-d’ or ‘-ed’
Yes, that’s correct! They all end with ‘-d’
or ‘-ed’
Let’s start with the first rule. For most
regular verbs, we simply add -ed to change
them to the past tense.
Rule 1: Add -ed to the Base Form of the
Verb
Examples:
Jump → Jumped
Visit → Visited
Now it’s your turn! Can you give your own
example of a verb where we just add -ed? Climb - Climbed
Count - Counted
Work - Worked
Excellent examples! See how simple that
is? Let’s move on to the next rule
Sometimes, we don’t need to add -ed. If
the verb already ends with ‘e’, we just add
-d.
Rule 2: Verbs Ending in ‘e’ – Just Add -
d
Examples:
Bake → Baked
Smile → Smiled
Dance - Danced
Can you think of more verbs that end in ‘e’ Love - Loved
and tell me how they change to past tense? Like - Liked
Great answers! Remember, if the verb ends
in ‘e’, just add -d.
Now, let’s talk about verbs that end with a
consonant + y. For these verbs, we change
the ‘y’ to ‘i’ and add -ed.
Rule 3: Verbs Ending in a Consonant +
Y – Change Y to I and Add -ed
Examples:
Carry → Carried
Cry → Cried
Can you give me your own examples of
verbs that end with y and how they change Try - Tried
to past tense? Marry - Married
Hurry - Hurried
Fantastic! You’ve got it. But remember we
only change the ‘y’ to ‘i’ if there’s a
consonant before it. If there’s a vowel
before the ‘y’, we just add -ed.
Finally, let’s talk about short verbs with a
vowel and a consonant at the end. For
these verbs, we need to double the
consonant before adding -ed.
Rule 4: Short Verbs with a Vowel and
Consonant – Double the Consonant and
Add -ed
Examples:
Hop → Hopped
Stop → Stopped
Can you think of other short verbs that Plan - Planned
follow this rule? Grab - Grabbed
Chat - Chatted
Exactly! Remember, we double the last
consonant only when the verb ends with a
vowel + consonant combination.
D. Generalization
To check whether you really learned
something today, let’s have a quick review.
What are regular verbs? Regular verbs are action words that
follow a rule of adding -ed or -d to
change into the past tense.
Very good! Now, what do we add to most
regular verbs to make them past tense? We add -ed ma’am
Exactly! If a verb ends in ‘e’, what do we
add to change it to past tense? We add -d ma’am
Perfect! Now, what happens to verbs that
end in a consonant + ‘y’? We change the ‘y’ to ‘i’ and add -ed
Great job! One last question. When do we
double the last consonant before adding -
ed? When the verb is short and ends with a
vowel + consonant combination
WOW! You got it all right, class!
Did you enjoy our discussion today? Yes, Ma’am!
Let’s now give ourselves a round of
applause.
E. Application
Now, let’s do another activity to see if you
really understand what we have discussed.
I will divide you into three groups, and
each group will be a mix of Grade 3 and
Grade 4 students.
Your task is to work together to create a
poem. Be creative, and make sure everyone
in your group contributes!
Once you finish, assign one representative (Students do the activity)
from your group to present your poem in
front of the class. You will be graded based
on the rubric provided.
You have 5 minutes to complete your
poem. Make sure to use your time wisely
and collaborate as a team!
