Course description
• This course is designed to introduce pharmacy students to the concepts of
contemporary pharmacy practice.

• Topics include interpretation and evaluation of different types of prescription,


observation of legal requirements and record keeping in dispensing, ethical
dilemma in pharmacy practice, patient counselling techniques using different
communication skills, medication adherence and disposal, the role and
application of evidence-based medicine in pharmacy practice, handling of
drug information requests, use of medical products including glucometer
and blood pressure monitor, and use of common self-administration
injectable medicines and inhalers. Vaccination training is also provided and
covers the clinical use of the common vaccines and the administration of the
vaccines.

• In addition, concepts related to primary care and management of minor


respiratory diseases in community setting are also covered in this course.

Course learning outcomes
1. Communicate effectively with patients and health care providers

2. Provide patient counseling and make recommendations based on the presence of minor respiratory
diseases and/or common health screening results

3. Display professional, ethical, and moral conduct in a pharmacy or professional setting

4. Evaluate prescriptions and dispense medicines in accordance to current pharmacy laws and with
ethical behavior

5. Demonstrate the knowledge and technical skills to provide vaccination to the general public

6. Identify and evaluate drug information resources and apply relevant knowledge and skills for handling
drug information requests

7. Describe the factors that can influence medication adherence and the approaches that pharmacists can
use to improve medication adherence

8. Describe the impact of medication wastage and inappropriate medications disposal, and the current
practice/recommendation of medication disposal in different countries

9. Propose the function of pharmacist and important elements and concepts in primary healthcare

Course learning strategies
• Lecture will present pharmacy students with essential information on specific topics and
provide pharmacy students with an opportunity to complete brief in-class activities, ask
questions, and/or receive feedback about new or complex ideas.

• Tutorial / practical will provide an opportunity for pharmacy students to work on client
cases and translate knowledge into practical applications. These activities will give
pharmacy students the opportunity to discuss ideas and concepts with class members and
teachers. These activities will also allow the pharmacy students to actively participate in the
learning process and assess their understanding of the key concepts.

• Sharing will provide a valuable occasion for pharmacy students to interact with the
representatives currently practicing in the industry and learn from their experiences.

• Required reading will serve as a foundational preparation for problem solving and review.
Pharmacy students must complete all required readings and are responsible for any
material covered in the required readings.

• Written examination will allow pharmacy students to demonstrate the course learning
outcomes and allows teachers to assess students’ achievement in the learning process
upon course completion.

however, circumstances may dictate a later response from time to time

in the course

• Expected to be in attendance during all designated class hours unless excused.


Students are expected to be present and participate actively in all guest speaker

Course assessments

2. Final Written Examination (50% course grade):

• Failure in the end-of-term written examination OR the overall course (pass


mark 50%) will necessitate the sitting of a written supplementary examination

• If the student successfully passes the supplementary examination, an overall


grade of D will be awarded for the entire course

• Students who fail the supplementary examination will be required to re-register


for the course in the following year

• Venue: simulation pharmacy (601B)

• Format: face-to-face interaction with video recording

• In your session, you will play the role of “pharmacist”, “patient/caregiver”,


and “peer assessor”

• The patient cases for a particular session will be released on Blackboard


7 days before that particular session for students’ preparation
o E.g. Cases for Feb 24 session will be released on Feb 17

o Will be given a hard copy containing further info about the patient by the
teacher at the beginning of the interaction

• “Peer assessor”
o Each student will evaluate 4 to 5 other “pharmacists”
o Peer assessment form (excel) will be downloadable on Blackboard
o You will give both score and comment to the “pharmacists”
o Both positive and negative comments for the “pharmacists” are highly
encouraged
▪ The teacher will collect the scores and comments from the “peer assessors”
and send to the “pharmacist” in one page anonymously
o If you decide to give everyone full mark, you should provide justification
o Should complete and submit the peer assessment form on Blackboard by
the end of the practical day (11:59 pm)
o Missing submission of the peer assessment form will result in YOUR own
5 marks reduction
