Valentines Day - February 14
On Valentines Day children and adults send or give cards, gifts, flowers, and candy to their
family and friends. It is a wonderful, fun, loving, and caring day. It is a very special time to
tell those around you how much you care about them.
Valentines Day falls on February 14th. Children cant wait to go
to school or see their friends to exchange that special valentine card.
They make special boxes and holders to put their cards in for safe
keeping.
Many children make cards and gifts for older people who are
lonely or in care centers. One day children in a first grade class took a
very large roll of pink paper. The teacher told them they could draw
Valentine pictures anywhere on the paper. The children were all excited. They worked and
colored for three days whenever they had free time. When they finished it was beautiful!
The children were happy. They took it to share with the older people in
the care center. The care center used the pink roll of paper as a
tablecloth. Many treats were placed on it. When the older people came
in they were surprised. They told the children that they were very kind.
They all sat down and began to eat the treats.
The first graders were happy because they made others happy that day.
Try to think of someone you can make happy on Valentines Day. Make
them feel special.
Draw a picture of what you would have drawn on the pink roll of paper.

Valentines Day - February 14
Valentines Day is one of the favorite and oldest holidays we celebrate.
Legend has it that Valentines Day was named for a Christian priest who was put in jail
many, many years ago. It was around A.D. 270. He was a very kind person who helped many
people. He would marry couples secretly against the Emperors
wishes.
The Emperor thought all young men should be soldiers. The
Emperor had Valentine put in jail. The Emperor wanted Valentine to
be put to death. Valentine had become friends with the jailers
daughter who was blind. Before he died he gave her a card. He
signed it, From your Valentine.
This is one of the reasons Valentines Day is associated with love and courtship.
The legend of St. Valentine is given to two legendary Christian martyrs. One was the
Christian priest the other was a Bishop martyred in Rome. Many people believe it was the
same person.
