Project Topics for Sociology of Law

Dear Students,

The projects are an integral component of the course to enrich your understanding of law and
its relationship with other social institutions. Thus, decide on your project preference to finalize
it with me by the end of the first teaching week and start working on it from the next. You must
choose any one from options given below:

Assignment 1: Law and Society through Movie

In this assignment, students must watch the documentary ‘The Rise of the Global Super Rich
and the Fall of Everyone Else.’
[Link]
Based on the documentary answer the following in not more than thousand words:
Does rule of law serve the twin purpose of social justice and order? Give reasons for your
answer and support your reasoning from the evidence in the documentary.
[Note: Do not waste words by providing summary of the documentary]

Assignment 2: Law and Society through Academic Article

In this assignment, students must read the article: ‘Class Bias in the Criminal Law’ by Andrew
Hopkins.
(a) Based on the above piece, explain the problem of proving intent for successful
prosecution in white collar crimes versus cases of conventional offenses. Supplement
your explanations with examples given in the article. (8 marks)
(b) Identify a suitable case law in India to explain the links between class bias and the
problem of proving intent in this case. (8 marks)

[Note: (I) The written assignment must have two separate parts, addressing both ‘a’ and ‘b’ in
not more than five hundred words each. (II) Do not to waste words by providing unnecessary
summary of the article and case.]

Assignment 3: Law and Society through Regulation

1
In this assignment, students must critically read the ‘Chanakya National Law University
(Discipline and Conduct Regulations)’ available on the University’s website:

Students must identify parts of regulation and reason how social biases find place in the
regulation to write a critical note on the University’s regulation in not less than thousand words.

[Note: Students must abstain from unnecessary quoting from the regulation.]

Assignment 4: Law and Society through Research Paper

Those interested in authoring a research paper should submit a statement of problem (one
thousand words) by the end of first teaching week. This note should include (a) the key concern
of research paper, (b) an annotated bibliography of recent academic writings (three to four),
and (c) potential gap in the academic literature. Mere submission of statement of problem does
not mean acceptance of the proposal for research paper. Decision of the course instructor shall
be final and binding.

Important Instructions (Applicable to All Assignments):

(a) Do not give excuses for missing the deadlines and waste time. Following deadlines
helps both students and teachers. Last-moment shortcuts only bring stress, penalties,
and loss of learning opportunities. We will follow the academic calendar for
submission-related deadlines.
(b) Final submissions will only be in the hardcopy along with the Similarity Report. A
Similarity of 15% or above will lead to rejection of the submission.
(c) I equally value the efforts put in projects along with the quality of the written work.
Hence, let us make projects a learning experience and not just a mechanical exercise to
meet the institutionally determined prerequisite.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Amit Jain, (Assistant Professor of Sociology)
