Biological drawing rules

1. Give a descriptive underlined heading at the TOP of the

drawing. It should include the type of section (e.g. cross section).
Remember that the heading tells the reader or marker what
exactly they are looking at so you need to be specific.
2. Use a HB pencil and not a clutch pencil.
3. You need to use ½ a page for your drawing so that detail can be
seen.
4. Your lines must be smooth and continuous.
5. No shading or colouring in.
6. Labels are ALWAYS on the right side of the drawing unless
there are many labels in which both sides can be used.
7. Labels must be in pen.
8. Label lines can be in pen or pencil.
9. Label lines must be drawn with a ruler and CANNOT cross over
each other or have an arrow at the end.
10. Labels must be directly underneath each other. Draw a light
pencil line vertically on the right side of the drawing but erase it
when you have finished writing your labels neatly.
11. Label must appear after the label line. In other words, the label
line must not be under the label.
12. Labels should be in print, not cursive, no capitals.
13. If you are drawing an image from a slide under the microscope,
draw it as you see it.
