About Our Editorial Consultants ...

DR NEIL DRAVE is a consultant applied linguist. He has researched and published


works on English learning and usage. Dr Drave is a qualified and practising IELTS
examiner and has also moderated test papers and examination papers for the Hong
Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority. He was instrumental in developing
and piloting the first English tests for HK school teachers and consults regularly
for the HK Institute of Education.

DR LANA ISRAEL is an international lecturer and consultant. She received her


doctorate in Experimental Psychology (University of Oxford) and has since written
and produced materials on learning. In 1993, Dr Israel received the Glenn T. Seaborg
Nobel Prize Visit Award for her research on learning and memory. That same year,
Dr Israel was named the ‘Brain Of The Year’ by The British Brain Trust.

DR PAUL LAM specializes in cognitive applied linguistics, English language


teaching, and web-based teaching and learning. He was the Language Programme
Design and Materials Development Officer in the Neuro-Cognitive Science for
Language Education Project at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK),
where he wrote the English teaching materials for some English enhancement
courses with a focus on cognitive approach.

PREFACE
ELITE 1 tests and evaluates a child’s ability in the areas of grammar, vocabulary,
comprehension and writing.
Diagnostic Tests
There are 12 Diagnostic Tests that are similar to the latest comprehension and continuous
writing format of the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE).
Creative Thinking
This section at the end of each Diagnostic Test allows the child to use his imagination and
express his creativity.
Pointers
This is a separate booklet consisting of hints, model essays and a glossary.
Helpful Hints: Clues on selected questions to help the child choose the appropriate
answers to the questions are provided.
Model Essays: Children can refer to the model essays for ideas on writing
techniques. A step-by-step guide provided with each model essay provides
additional tips on how to improve on their writing.
Glossary & Creative Words and Phrases: A list of selected words and phrases
from each exercise is provided to build vocabulary and improve comprehension.
Noteworthy: Explanation on different text types and their common features are
provided to give children a wider exposure and understanding of them.
Diagnostic Tools
This is presented as a table at the end of each test. A detailed breakdown of the marks

How To Use The Diagnostic Tools
Step 1: Mark the child’s paper. (See below, Marking Scheme for section on Writing.)
Step 2: Circle the stars under the question numbers that the child has done incorrectly.
Step 3: Total up the marks at the end of each row.
Step 4: Refer to What your scores tell you and the feedback on the specific components. Refer to the
Achievement Levels (ALs) to find out how well your child has done. Achievement Level 1 (AL1) is
the best score and Achievement Level 8 (AL8) is the lowest score.

Marking Scheme

Section B/C: Writing


The total marks allocated for writing is 10. Next, read through the story again. This time, focus
on spelling or mistakes in grammar. Underline them.
Writing is divided into two components: CONTENT
