1.0 INTRODUCTION
The Botil Model “BA-2” Lock-Set Retrievable Casing Packer is a general purpose packer
for production, injection, zone isolation, or remedial operations. It holds pressure from
above or below while allowing the tubing to be placed in tension, compression, or in a
neutral condition. The Model “BA-3” Lock-Set Retrievable Casing Packer is a version of
the “BA-2” that incorporates a three piece element system. The element system is
bonded into a one-piece system for increased swab-off resistance. The operational
parameters are the same as a “BA-2”.
2.0 APPLICATIONS
Since the Retrievable Lock-Set is not effected by forces transmitted by the tubing, it may
be used in many application where a Mechanical Set Retainer Production Packer might be
used, such as (1) a lower packer for two packer completions with the Botil Model”K” or
“KM” Dual Packers, (2) with the Botil Snap-Set Dual Tension Packer, and (3) with the
Botil Model “A’ or “AR” Compression Packers. Botil Model “M” or “MR” Snap-Set Packers
may be used as upper packers where there is sufficient tubing between packers to
provide adequate set-down weight for the Lock-Set Packer. The Lock-Set Packer may
also be used with the Botil Parallel String Anchor, above a Retainer Production, or any
other hook-up which allows right-hand tubing rotation, with up-strain, to release the
Lock-Set Packer.
3.0 LIMITATIONS

3. PACKING ELEMENT SYSTEM AND TEMPERATURE LIMITATIONS:
The Packing Element System for Size 43 and 45 has two solid 80 Durometer
Standard Packing Elements. The Packing Element System for Sizes 47, 49 and 51
consists of one 90Durometer Cup Forming Packing Element and one 90

Durometer Standard Packing Element. This system will hold low or high pressure from
either direction. The Cup Forming Packing Element should be assembled on top to
prevent possible malfunction of the Packer. Temperature range is 70-275F.
4.0 DESCRIPTION
The Botil Lock-Set Retrievable Casing Packer is a Full –Bore Double-Grip Retrievable Packer with an
integral Unloader. Opposed, non- transferring dovetail Slips prevent movement of the Packer in either
direction due to pressure differentials, while allowing landing of the tubing in tension, compression, or
neutral. The Lock segments serve as a releasable Lock Ring to maintain pack-off once the packer is set,
and locks the Un-loader in the closed position until the tool is released. The Split Lock and Control
Segments allow the tool to be both set and released with right-hand rotation.
5.0 OPERATION
1. To Run and Set the Packer
a) Hang the Packer to completely stretch it out before starting in the hole. Immediately prior to
running in, rotate the Drag Block Housing several turns to the Left to make sure the Segments
are functioning properly.
b) Do not rotate the Drag Block Housing to the right as this will bind the Control Segments and
prevent them from moving after reaching setting depth.
c) Upon reaching setting depth, slowly lower the packer while applying approximately two turns of
right- hand rotation at the tool, until the tool takes weight. Set down a minimum of 6,000 lbs. to
initially set the Upper Slips. Lowering of the tool must take place while rotating for the tool to set
properly.
d) To fully engage the Lower Slips, apply an up-strain against the tool:

When the tubing is be landed in
tension, a strain greater than the landing strain should be applied during the setting operation.
e) To set the Upper Slips and pack-off the Packing Element system apply set down weight:
NOTE:
AT this point in the setting procedure, if sufficient set-down weight is not available,
such as in very shallow wells, the tool can be set and packed – off by left hand rotation
or spudding.
f) The tubing may now be hung in tension, compression or neutral.
2. To Release the Packer
Apply an up strain of approximately 3,000 to 6,000 lbs. and rotate the tubing to the
right from four to eight turns at the tool, until the tool moves up the hole. When

releasing the packer with pressure in favor of the tubing, rotate tubing to the right
slowly enough to equalize before the lower Slips disengage. Continue to rotate to the
right several turns while moving up the hole to be certain the slips are fully retracted.
CAUTION:
When using a Model “FL” on – off sealing connecter, Product No. BI 683-15, in
conjunction with the Lock-Set Packer in the following procedure should be applied to
prevent left – hand torque from possibly disengaging the Lock-Set Packer.
“Check to verify engagement of the on - off connector every fifteen or twenty stands by
rotation to the right to see if Packer will set.
6.0 DRAG BLOCK ASSEMBLY: DRAG BLOCK ASSEMBLY PROCEDURES
NOTE:
ALL SIZES OF CURRENT drag Block have a groove on the surface which is the same
depth as the hard surface. If this groove is plainly visible, the Drag Block may be used;
if not, the hard surface is worn and Drag Block should be discarded.
SIZE 43, 45 & 47
Place the Drag Block Housing in the assembly fixture with the slot for the Drag Block
lining up with the slot in the fixture. Place the fixture in the vise with the slots directly
under the vise pad as shown below. Install the springs in the Drag Blocks. Place a Drag
Block in the slot in the Housing, with the flange on the end of the Drag Block under the
Ring on the Drag Block Housing. Tighten the vise slightly, until the Drag Block is held
by the vise. Using a small screw driver, straighten the springs so that they are square
with the Housing. Slowly tighten the vise, keeping the Springs Square, until the top of
the Drag Block is below the bevel on the inside of the slot in the fixture. Place a wrench
on the box end of the Housing and rotate the Housing until the next slot lines up with
the slot in the fixture (on the Size 43, the Drag Block Retainer should be installed hand
tight before rotating the Housing, and removed before installing the second Drag Block)
Repeat the procedure for the remaining Drag Blocks., until the fourth is compressed
below the ID of the Retainer. Make up Retainer. Screw the Lower cone onto the Drag
Block Housing and drive the assembly from the fixture. Make up the Retainer tightly
and install the Set Screw.

a) Place the Drag Block Housing on a vise. Be certain one of the slots falls directly under the
adjustable pad of the vise.
b) On Size 49B, place Shims in Drag Block Housing with a small amount of grease as a hold.

c) Slide springs (4req’d.) into the Drag Block. Apply a small amount of grease on one end of each
spring to create a “temporary hold”.
d) Unscrew the adjustable pad of the vise and install the Drag Block with springs.
e) Tighten the adjustable pad down against the Drag Block enough to slide the Assembly Ring into
place .Place slotted end of the Assembly Ring facing the toe of the Drag Block.
f) Use the Drag Block Retaining Ring to back up the Assembly Ring and to keep the Drag Block from
squirting off (See Illustration No.1,page 4)
g) When the first Drag Block is in place, turn Assembly Ring Slot to coincide with the slot on the
Housing.
h) Unscrew the vise and rotate the Housing to the next vacant slot.
Repeat procedure Nos. 1 to 7.
i) When all Drag Blocks are installed, tighten the Drag Block Retainer Ring and remove the entire
assembly from vise.
j) Set the assembly on a flat surface and slide on the clamping ring. (See Illustration No. 2 , page
4)
k) With the Clamping Ring holding the Drag Block in place, unscrew the Retaining Ring and remove
the Assembly Ring.
l) Install the Drag Block Retainer Ring and knock off the Clamping Ring.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY
Apply a thin coat of Downhole Grease to the Slots in the Slip Ring. Lay a cone and Slip
Ring on their sides
On a bench. Install the Slips from the inside by inserting the Toe end of the Slip into
the matching grooves of the Cone and then engaging the Slip in the T- Slots in the Slip
Ring as shown below. When one set of Slips is assembled, compress the Slip Ring and

Cone so Slips cannot fall out and assemble the other set of Slips in the same manner.
(On Size 47, the undercut in I.D. of the Slip Ring must face towards the lower Cone)
Insert Sleeve into Upper Cone (through the lower Cone on Size 47, 49 &51), and install
Support Sleeve (Size 47, 49 & 51) Gage Ring, Packing Elements, and Spacer on the
Sleeve. Insert the Bearing, Bearing Ring, Snap Ring, and Seal in the Seal Retainer and
make up the Seal Retainer on Sleeve. Dope threads on Mandrel with Seal and drive
Mandrel through the Seal carefully. Install the Lock Segments, Control Segments and
Grater Springs. On Size 49 and 51, mesh two Grater Springs together in each groove.
Apply a light coat of Downhole Grease to the Mandrel below Lower Cone. Do not
grease the Segments.
NOTE:
Control Segments have one (1) scribed line and must be 180 degrees from each other.
Lock Segments have two (2) scribe lines and must be 180 degrees from each other.
Thread the Drag Block Housing (Left – hand thread on Sizes 43, 45, & 47. Right hand
thread on Sizes 49 and 51) onto the Lower Cone. Make certain that the scribed lines on
Control and Lock Segments are next to Lower Cone by using the inspection ports on
the Drag Block Housing. Line up holes in the Drag Block Housing and install Cap
Screws, make up Coupling on the Mandrel with recommended API torque. Double –
check the assembly by setting and releasing the tool in the vise after assembly.
CAUTION:
At no time should a wrench be applied to the seal surface on the Mandrel. Do not paint
Slip Ring, Slips or Cones. Wrap with protective paper.
