Definition of Terms

Effectiveness - the degree to which something is effective. ([Link])

In this study, effectiveness is defines as the efficacy of sports on the academic aspect of

students who are also athletes and schooling inside of pontevedra national highschool.

Sports - Sports, physical contests pursued for the goals and challenges they entail. Sports are

part of every culture past and present, but each culture has its own definition of sports. The

most useful definitions are those that clarify the relationship of sports to play, games, and

contests. “Play,” wrote the German theorist Carl Diem, “is purposeless activity, for its own sake,

the opposite of work.” Humans work because they have to; they play because they want to.

Play is autotelic—that is, it has its own goals. It is voluntary and uncoerced. Recalcitrant
children compelled by their parents or teachers to compete in a game of football (soccer) are

not really engaged in a sport. Neither are professional athletes if their only motivation is their

paycheck. In the real world, as a practical matter, motives are frequently mixed and often quite

impossible to determine. (Encyclopedia Britannica).

In this study sports define as the sport refers to any physical activities that the students at

Pontevedra National High School participate in, either as part of the school's athletic program

or in their own time

Academic performance is the measurement of student achievement across various academic

subjects. Teachers and education officials typically measure achievement using classroom

performance, graduation rates, and results from standardized tests.([Link])

In this study academic performance refers to the level of achievement of students in their

educational pursuits, primarily assessed through their grades, test scores, participation in

classroom activities, and completion of academic work. In this study, it specifically pertains to

the academic achievement of students at Pontevedra National High School, and how their

participation in sports may influence this performance.
