Lesson 23 – Competition Prep IV

1. The figure below shows a triangle 𝐴𝐵𝐶, with point 𝐷 on the line 𝐴𝐶 such that
𝐴𝐷 ∶ 𝐷𝐶 = 6 ∶ 5, while the point 𝐸 is the midpoint of 𝐵𝐶. Given that the area of
triangle 𝐵𝐷𝐸 is 10 𝑐𝑚2, find the area of triangle 𝐴𝐹𝐷.

2. A seller had an equal number of Grade A and Grade B durians. 2 Grade A durians cost
$5, while 3 Grade B durians cost $5. The seller mixed the durians up and sold them at
5 durians for $10. After the seller sold all the durians, he found out that he received
$35 less than if he had sold all the durians according to their grades. What was the
total number of durians sold?

3. A 3-digit and a 4-digit number are formed using the digits 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, without
repetition. Given that these two numbers give the largest possible product, find their
sum.

4. James, Charles and Nate are in the archery team. During a friendly match, they
attempted 8, 7 and 6 shots, respectively, without any misses. Each shot can score
either 10, 7 or 5 points. They had a total score of 51. Based on the table below, find
the sum of 𝑥, 𝑦 and 𝑧.

5. On a Sunday morning, Malcolm started to jog along a 400 𝑚 circular route at a
uniform speed of 2 𝑚/𝑠. One minute later, Timothy started from the same point as
Malcolm did but he jogged in the opposite direction at a constant speed of 3 𝑚/𝑠.
Whenever Timothy meets Malcolm along the route, he would change his direction.
How many times had Timothy changed his direction when Malcolm completed 10
rounds?

8. In the figure below, each side of the smaller quadrilateral ABCD is extended to twice
its original length. By connecting the vertices, we obtain a larger quadrilateral WXYZ.
E.g. 𝐴𝑋 = 2𝐴𝐵. If the area of the smaller quadrilateral is 30 cm2, find the area of the
larger quadrilateral.

9. While Abel was walking from Town A to Town B, Bondy was cycling from Town B to
Town A. They started travelling at the same time and each of them travelled at a
constant speed along the road. After they met each other along the way, Abel took 9
times as long as Bondy to complete the rest of journey. Find Bondy’s cycling speed,
given that Abel’s walking speed was 80 m/min.

10. In the figure below, 𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷 is a square of side 6 𝑐𝑚. If 𝐵𝐸 = 2𝐶𝐸 and 𝐷𝐹 = 2𝐶𝐹, find
the area of the shaded region.

11. Jonathan and Nicolas love to fold paper planes. They take 2 and 3 hours, respectively,
to fill a bag with 𝑥 planes. They decided to work together and started folding planes at
the same time to fill a bag with 𝑥 planes. After 30 minutes, Jonathan took a 10 minute
break before continuing while Nicolas never rested. In the end, Jonathan folded 24
more planes than Nicolas. Find the value of 𝑥.
