10. See the graphical representation of two types of current. 3
a. Identify the correct statement about these currents:
i. Both represent DC. ii. Graph 2 represents DC, but Graph 1 does not.
b. What is mutual induction?
c. Can the current represented by Graph 2 cause mutual induction? Justify your answer.
Ans.a. i. Both represent DC.
b. When a varying current is passed through one of the two adjacent coils, an emf is induced in the
second coil. This phenomenon is called mutual induction.
c. Yes. The current represented by the graph.1 is varying current even though it is unidirectional (DC)
11. It is given a branch of a household circuit. 3
a. What are the two advantages of connecting the devices in parallel as
shown?
b. If the circuit works 6 hours daily, calculate monthly consumption of
electrical energy kWhr.
c. Choose the amperage of the fuse wire suitable to this circuit.
( 2 A, 3 A, 4.5 A, 7 A)
Ans.a.When they are connected in parallel;
1.all devices get same voltage (230 V) and they can work at their marked
power.
2.they can be controlled using separate switches as our need.
b. Daily consumption = 6x(100+60+750)/1000= 5.46 kWh
Monthly consumption = 30x5.46 = 163.8 kwh
c. Amperage of the circuit = (100+60+750)/230 = 4 A
Amperage of the fuse wire = 4.5 A
12. In an ideal transformer (transformer without energy loss), there are 5000 turns in the primary and 250 3
turns in the secondary. If the primary voltage is 120V and the primary current is 0.1A,find the voltage,
current and power in the secondary.
Ans.i. Vs/Vp = Ns/Np
Vs/120 = 250/5000
Or Vs = 120x250/5000 = 6 V
ii. Vs/Vp = Ip/Is
6/120 = 0.1/Is Or Is = 0.1x120/6 = 2 A
iii. Ps = VsxIs = 6x2 = 12 W

14. Answer the following questions in one or two sentences. 4
a. What is the function of MCB in an electric circuit?
b. A safety fuse utilizes the heating effect of electric current. What about an MCB?
c. Give a few examples for devices which work only in DC.
d. Write down any two precautions to be taken to avoid electric shock.
Ans.a. MCB is a device that automatically turns off an electric circuit when the current exceeds the
permissible limit.
b. MCB works on heating and magnetic effect of current.
c. Mobile phone, Radio . [ Any electronic device]
d. 1. Make sure the earthing is perfect.
2. Make sure there is sufficient protective devices in the circuit such as safety fuse, MCB, ELCB etc.
3. Never handle or operate devices with wet hand.
4. Wear foot wear while operating electrical devices.
15. Threepin plug is a protective system used in electric circuits. 4
a.How does the earth pin of a threepin plug differ from other pins?
b. What are the benefits of the speciality of this pin?
c. Briefly explain how a three pin plug ensure safety.
Ans.a.It is longer and thicker than the other two pins.
b.i.Since the earth pin is longer than the others, when the three-pin plug is inserted into the socket, the
earth pin makes contact with the circuit first. Similarly, when the plug is unplugged, the earth pin will
be the last to break contact. So this unique design of the earth pin ensures continuous protection from
the moment of insertion to the moment of removal.
ii. Since the earth pin is thicker, it avoids improper plugging into the socket.
c. Upon inserting the three-pin plug into a socket, the device's metallic body establishes a connection
with the earth via the earth line. In case the metallic body accidentally makes contact with an electric
connection, excessive current is directed through the earth wire to the earth. This flow of excess
current causes the fuse to melt or the ELCB to trip, consequently breaking the circuit. Thus this
mechanism ensures the safety of the person handling the device.
16. There are many devices in our household circuit. 4
a. Which is the device to which the electric line reaching a household circuit first?
b. What is the purpose of this device?
c. A household circuit has three lines. To which line are the fuses connected?
