CHAPTER-
REPRODUCTION IN PLANTS
I. Answer these questions:
Q 1. Differentiate between asexual and sexual reproduction.
ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION SEXUAL REPRODUCTION
1 No fusion of gametes takes place Sexual reproduction involves the
in asexual reproduction. fusion of male and female gametes.
2 Process like gamete formation or Fertilization of gametes give rise to
fertilization is not seen. zygote.
3 Characteristics of only one parent Characteristics of both parents are
is inherited. inherited.
4 Seeds are not required. Seeds are used to get new plants from
a flower.
Q 2. List the advantages of vegetative reproduction.
Ans.1.It is an easier, rapid and less expensive method of reproduction. Plants can be grown in
much less time.
2. Plants produced by this method are identical copies of the parent plant and show no
variations.
3. Seedless plants can be grown.
4. Plants like sugarcane, sweet potato, rose, jasmine do not produce viable seeds. Such plants
can be easily grown by this method.
Q3. Name some artificial methods of vegetative propagation. Give examples.
Ans. 1.Cutting-as in rose, sugarcane
2. Layering-as in jasmine
3. Grafting-as in mango
4. Tissue culture-as in Orchids, Chrysanthemum
Q4. Explain the differences between self-pollination and cross-pollination.
Ans. Self-pollination occurs when pollen grains from the anther is deposited on the stigma of
the same flower or another flower on the same plant. It occurs in bisexual plants having anther
and stigma maturing at the same time. It takes place in plants like wheat, peas, barley, apricots,
peaches etc.
Cross-pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther of one flower to the stigma of
another flower on a different individual of the same species. It occurs in bisexual flowers having
anther and stigma maturing at different times. It takes place in plants like apples, tomatoes,
cucumbers, strawberries, pumpkins etc.
Q5.What is seed dispersal? List the various ways by which seeds are dispersed with
examples.
Ans. Seed dispersal is an adaptive mechanism in all seed-bearing plants, participating in the
movement or transport of seeds away from their parent plant to ensure the germination and
survival of some of the seeds to adult plants.
The various ways by which seeds are dispersed are-
*by animals, birds and human beings – Xanthium, Seeds of fruits
*by wind- seeds of Madar, Maple, Cotton
* by water – Coconut , Lotus
*by explosion – Peas
Q 6. What do you think will happen if all seeds of a plant were to fall at the same place
and grow there?
