This research study aimed to determine the Filipino Students’ Level of

Cognizance to Social Media Posts at the Universidad de Dagupan, Main Campus, AY
2023-2024 in the College of Teacher Education Department. This study is quantitative
research that utilizes test questionnaires. The result of the study served as the basis for an
action plan.

The researchers used Google Forms via messenger to send the survey to Filipino major
students. The researcher used a convenient sampling method to determine the sample
size. The frequency and percentage distributions, a general weighted mean, and the
chisquare test were used to calculate the data.

The researchers concluded that most of the respondents are females aged 18-21
years old and exhibited a low level of cognizance across all categories. Among the
different categories, the respondents displayed the highest level of cognizance in news
related social media posts. Conversely, the lowest level of cognizance was observed in
status-related social media posts. Specifically, efforts should focus on improving source
validation, content comprehension, legitimacy verification, and understanding of the
consequences of online actions, mainly when posting status updates.

CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study

Technology has enabled individuals to communicate with anyone

instantly, irrespective of where they may be in the world. Social Networking

Sites (SNS) have enabled people to communicate in a much cheaper way as

compared to communication mediums of the past. One of the salient

features of social media is that everyone can be a source of information,

unlike in traditional media where the source is often authoritative after

screening and verification. However, anyone can publish a post on social

media at any time. Usually, neither screened nor verified. In addition, public

opinion associated with these posts begins to build up. In most cases, some

users blindly follow and support opinion leaders, thereby posting new

content that further exacerbates the trend of public opinion. Public opinion

sometimes has a certain degree of blindness regarding social media content,

thus causing people not to trust it as much as mainstream media. Cognizant

of this, people spend more time and energy to discern whether the

information is worth believing, thereby causing more obstacles to cognitive

processing. The duplication of publishers of information in social media

platforms requires more cognitive resources.

lOMoARcPSD|20987495

This paper looked to assess whether students are aware of the dangers

linked to social media, such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, LinkedIn,

etc. Most higher education institution offers free Wi-Fi to, their staff,

students, and guests, enabling access to social media whenever they are at

the institution. Social media sites allow one to post information, pictures,

videos, and comments. Various social media sites are easy for everyone to

sign up for if they have access to the internet. The proposed paper looked to

establish if students are aware of the risks associated with using social

media and to establish why students post various information on social

media websites.

This study is necessary to conduct to determine the Filipino major

students’ level of cognizance of Social Media posts in this unprecedented

time. Through this study, it can engage them to continue their level of

performance in school and increase the adaptability of techniques and skills

in social media most especially in social media posts. The findings and

outcomes of this study will serve as a basis to create an Action Program

towards positive, adaptive activities designed to produce holistic and

competent Filipino major students.

lOMoARcPSD|20987495

Theoretical Background

This study is anchored on Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Learning Theory and

the supporting two theories Self Efficacy Theory Albert Bandura (1977) and

Media Ecology Theory (MET).

Vygotsky's Socio-cultural Learning Theory states that the participation

and learning of an individual involve social interaction to develop cognition.

This theory is widely recognized in the fields of educational psychology and

instructional technology and focuses on the role social interaction and

culture play in the development of higher-order thinking skills. Vygotsky

believed that thinking has social origins and that cognitive development

cannot be understood without reference to the social context within which it

is embedded. Peer and Clendon (2002) highlighted that this theory advocates

a constructive, self-regulated, and goal-oriented environment with the

student at the center of the educational process.

Albert Bandura’s theory suggests that therapeutic change can be

brought about by experiences of mastery arising from successful

performance. It emphasizes the importance of the individual and their

perceptions of their capabilities as key determinants of successful outcomes.

Self-efficacy theory suggests that it is the responsibility of the government

and society to provide everyone with sufficient opportunities to engage in

lOMoARcPSD|20987495

mastery experiences, receive positive social persuasion, and witness

positively reinforcing models that will engender a strong sense of

selfefficacy.

According to Marshall McLuhan. He understood the influence of

technologies such as clocks, radios, television, movies, and games on

society. Media Ecology Theory (MET) is the study of how media and

communication processes influence human perception, feeling,

understanding, and value.

According to Basil Oguguo (2020). Information and Communication

Technology (ICT) is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the world, with

significant changes in industries, education, agriculture, medicine, business,

engineering, and other fields. Social media is an aspect of ICT that has

rapidly proliferated and penetrated almost every sector of human life. Social

media is fast changing the public discourse in our societies and setting trends

and agendas in topics that range from the environment, education, and

politics to technology and the entertainment industries. Media is seen as any

means of information sharing that requires the use of such media as

newspapers, radios, televisions, magazines, etc. Webster referred to media as

any medium through which one can express, cultivate or convey

information.
lOMoARcPSD|20987495

Social media is seen as those activities involving the human

environment and the individuals living and sharing resources in the

environment. Online social media used for collaborative learning had a

significant impact on interactivity with peers, teachers, and online

knowledge-sharing behaviour. Additionally, interactivity with teachers, and

peers, and online knowledge-sharing behaviour has seen a significant impact

on students’ engagement which consequently has a significant impact on

students’ academic performance. The study also found that the use of online

social media for collaborative learning facilitates students to be more

creative, dynamic, and research-oriented.

According to Purva Grover, (2022). The influence of the content

posted on social media depends on communicators, receivers, and contextual

scenarios Consumer experiences present on social media can be used for

market intelligence for driving traffic and increasing sales had presented the

role of social media in promotions, advertisement, branding, and customer

relationship management. Reviews present on social media influence the

shopping and dining out choices of the customer’s positive messages are

associated with higher sales while negative messages are associated with

lower sales. To the best of our knowledge, no article in the literature

illustrates how individual decision-making is being affected by social media

lOMoARcPSD|20987495

posts in different contexts such as organizations, the marketplace, and social

environments.

According to Maslin Binti Masrom (2021). The use of online social

networks (OSNs) has increasingly attracted attention from scholars in

different disciplines. Recently, student behaviors in online social networks

have been extensively examined. However, limited efforts have been made

to evaluate and systematically review the current research status to provide

insights into previous study findings. Moreover, the Stimulus-Organism

Response (SOR) model was utilized to classify the factors that influence

student behaviour. The results demonstrate that the number of studies that

address student behaviours on OSNs has recently increased. The identified

studies focused on five research streams, including academic purpose, cyber

victimization, addiction, personality issues, and knowledge-sharing

behaviours.

Alfonso Pellegrino (2022). Despite their increasing ubiquity in people's

lives and incredible advantages in instantly interacting with others, social

media's impact on subjective well-being is a source of concern worldwide

and calls for up-to-date investigations of the role social media plays in

mental health. Much research has discovered how habitual social media use

may lead to addiction and negatively affect adolescents' school performance,

lOMoARcPSD|20987495

social behaviour, and interpersonal relationships. The data were then

uploaded to VOS viewer software to analyze citations, co-citations, and

keyword cooccurrences. Volume, growth trajectory, the geographic

distribution of the literature, influential authors, intellectual structure of the

literature, and the most prolific publishing sources were analyzed. The

bibliometric analysis presented in this paper shows that the US, the UK, and

Turkey accounted for 47% of the publications in this eld. Most of the studies

used quantitative methods in analyzing data and therefore aimed at testing

relationships between variables. In addition, the findings in this study show

that most analyses were cross-sectional. Studies were performed on

undergraduate students between the ages of 19–25 on the use of two social

media platforms .

THE PROBLEM

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the Filipino Major Students’ Level of

Cognizance to Social Media Posts at the Universidad de Dagupan, A.Y

2023-2024. The results of the study served as a basis for a proposed action

is an accessible institution within the metro, providing varied and

constantly upgraded courses for the youth. The campus has been, and still

is home to a myriad of top-notch champions in the fields of academics,

technology, arts and culture, and sports. College of Teacher Education

(CTE) has a Mini AVR and Demo Room. Also, they offer many programs

the Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEED), Bachelor of Secondary

Education (BSED), Bachelor of Physical Education (BPED), and Bachelor

of Special Needs Education (BSNED). Majors offered at the University of

Cebu – Main Campus in the College of Teacher Education department are

English, Science, Filipino, Social Studies, and Math.

Research Respondents

The research respondents of this study were Filipino major students

enrolled at the University of Cebu Main Campus for the school year

20222023 who can experience and enjoy the benefits of social media sites

and posts. Or who might have been strongly affected by social media posts?

The researcher used a convenient sampling method to determine the sample

size.
lOMoARcPSD|20987495

The researchers conducted the Slovin formula with a margin error of 0.05

and the result indicated that the respondents are 40. The respondents’

comfort and emotional status were taken into consideration upon giving the

questionnaires so that the accuracy of their responses would not be affected.

Research Instruments

This study used researchers made survey questionnaire. The research made

survey questionnaire was distributed to the respondents and it is composed

of two parts: Firstly, what is the profile of the respondents in terms of age,

gender, and year level, and the respondents to social media in terms of news,

videos, photos, links, and status. Lastly, a significant relationship between

their level of cognizance of social media posts.

Research Procedure

Gathering of Data. To obtain the data for the study the researcher

asked for written permission from the College Dean, and the researcher

conducted and administered the said questionnaire. Each item of the

questionnaire was analyzed and All respondents were gathered virtually

using Google Forms as one of the platforms amidst this crisis in answering

the research questionnaire and gave them instructions on how to accomplish

the questionnaire.

14

Treatment of Data. The data gathered using the instrument of this

study were treated with the aid of the;

Frequency Distribution is an arrangement of the data which shows

the frequency of different values or groups of variables.

Weighted Mean is the most often used in central tendency calculation

since it is prone to fewer errors. The tabulated data will be treated with the

use of frequency distribution, percentage, and weighted mean.

The percentage is to be used to determine the proportion of each

given data by using the formula.

Chi-square Test is used to determine if a difference between

observed data and expected data is due to chance, or if it is due to a

relationship between the variables you are studying.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Education. This will help students to better understand and be

cognitively aware of the influence e of social media and its post on online

portals.
lOMoARcPSD|20987495

15

Level of Cognizance. This refers to the measurement of knowledge

and awareness of students or individuals in understanding the uses and role

of social media and its social media influence on the lives of social media

users.

Profile. refers to the basic information of the respondents,

particularly their age and sex.

Proposed Action Plan. An action plan is a list of what steps must be

taken to achieve a specific goal. It breaks down the goal into actionable steps

that can be easily followed and tracked.

Social Media Post Content shared on social media through a user's

profile. It can be as simple as a blurb of text, but can also include images,

The results reveal that the respondents exhibited a low level of

cognizance across all categories, Among the different categories, the

respondents displayed the highest level of cognizance in news-related

social media posts, Conversely, the lowest level of cognizance was

observed in status-related social media posts. According to the study,

the popularity of social media applications and social networking sites

has increased precipitously during the last decade. Typically, the reason

for this rapid increase is that teenagers and college and university

students are using social media applications to gain global access.

These social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, are becoming

the craze in our society for everyone these days. Today, students are

relying increasingly on information and data that is easily accessible on

social networking sites and the internet. This is the reason why

students' learning skills and research capabilities are decreasing in

certain situations, as their engagement with these sites reduces their

focus, which causes them to dedicate less time to their studies and

results in a decline in their academic performance. These findings

underscore the need for increased awareness and education in media

literacy, particularly regarding source evaluation, content

comprehension, legitimacy verification, and understanding of social

media's consequences. Specifically, efforts should focus on improving

source

understanding of the consequences of online actions, mainly when

The analysis revealed a significant association between

respondents' age and their level of cognizance regarding social media

posts. The data suggest that the respondents' age is related to their

cognizance level. It could mean the younger respondents ages 18– 21

years old have a high cognizant level to social media posts than their

older ones. However, caution should be exercised in making specific

claims about different age groups without further information since the

CHAPTER 3 SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND

RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of the study, the findings, and the

conclusions and recommendations of the study.

Summary

This study aimed to determine the Filipino Major Students' Level of

Cognizance to Social Media Posts at the University of Cebu, Main Campus,

A.Y 2022-2023. The results of the study served as the basis for a proposed

action plan.

Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of;

1.1. Age; and

1.2. Sex?

2. What is the respondents’ level of cognizance to social media in

terms of;

2.1. news;

lOMoARcPSD|20987495

22

3. Is there a significant relationship between the respondents’ level of

cognizance to their profile?

4. Based on the findings, what action plan can be proposed?

With the advent of technology nowadays, students are more likely to

rely on social media posts and technology advancement serves as one of the

sources of information on gathering and decoding data and technology-based

learning. Students are creative and adaptive in times of change and

competition while learning new things through updates and social media

posts. The study employs a Descriptive Correlational design. Descriptive

correlational research is a quantitative research method that attempts to

collect quantifiable information for statistical analysis of the population

sample.

Findings

1. The profile of the respondents indicates a relatively young group

andfalls within the age range of 18 to 21 years. The most common age group

is 19 years old, 30% of the respondents; and 20 years old (20%). In terms of

sex, most of the respondents are female, constituting 70% of the total

sample.

2. The results of a survey revealed that respondents exhibited a low

levelof cognizance across all categories, with the highest level of cognizance

in news-related social media posts at 2.99. The lowest level of cognizance

23

was observed in status-related social media posts at 3.33. and understanding

of social media's consequences. In news-related social media posts, the

respondents exhibited the highest level of cognizance in verifying the

legitimacy of the news presented to them, with a mean score of 3.03. In

video-related social media posts, the respondents' level of cognizance also

falls within the low category, with a slightly higher level of cognizance in

verifying the legitimacy of the videos they have watched.

3. The analysis revealed a significant association between

respondents'age and their level of cognizance regarding social media posts.

The data suggest that the respondents' age is related to their cognizance

level. It could mean the younger respondents ages 18–21-year-old has a high

cognizant level of social media posts than their older ones. However, there is

no significant relationship between cognizance level and age and sex.

Conclusions

The results reveal that the respondents exhibited a low level of

cognizance across all categories findings suggest that there is a need for

increased awareness and education in media literacy, particularly regarding

source evaluation, content comprehension, legitimacy verification, and

understanding of social media's consequences, particularly in news-related

social media posts who have the highest level of cognizance. Additionally,

efforts should focus on improving source validation, content comprehension,
