There are three major newspapers in a large city.

Suppose
we have the following facts about people in the city:

• 60% read Newspaper A.

• 37% read Newspaper B.
• 58% read Newspaper B or C.
• 14% read Newspapers A and B.
• 18% read Newspapers A and C.
• 9% read Newspapers B and C.
• 3% read all three newspapers.

1. We randomly select one person in the city. The outcome

of interest is which (if any) of the newspapers a person
reads. Give the complete sample space of outcomes.
2. What is P(A ∪ B)?
3. What is P(C)?
4. What is the probability that someone reads Newspaper C
if we know they read Newspaper A?
5. What is the probability that someone reads Newspaper A
if we know they don’t read Newspaper B?
6. What is the probability a person reads exactly one of
the three newspapers?
7. What is the probability a person reads none of the three
newspapers?
8. Are any two of the events A, B and C independent?
9. Are any two of the events A, B and C mutually
exclusive?
