TITLE: EMERGENCY DIESEL GENERATOR SIZING CALCULATIONS

1 GENERAL

1.1 Scope

This calculation is prepared to determine the capacity of Emergency Diesel Generators for
providing power to emergency loads.

1.2 Standards and Reference Documents

IEEE 399-1990 : Recommended Practice for Industrial and

Commercial Power System Analysis

Electrical Load List.

Electrical Design Basis

2 CALCULATION OF GENERATOR CAPACITY

The basic criteria for the sizing of emergency diesel genset are based on:
The capacity of generator should be sufficient for peak operating loads: PG1
The capacity when considering momentary voltage drop caused by starting
of largest motor: PG2
The Capacity considering generator overload capability: PG3

2.1 Capacity for Emergency Operating Loads (PG1)

The capacity (PG1) required for peak Emergency operation load is calculated by the
following formula:

PG1= P/n) x a x 1/Pfg

Where
P = Peak Emergency Load
= 618.8 kW
n = Efficiency of the loads (Already taken care in Load List)
a = Factor (load factor, demand factor) (Already taken care in Load List)
Pfg = Power factor of the generator
= 0.8

By putting values
PG1 = (617.8/1) x 1 x 1/0.8
PG1 = 773 kVA

2.2 Capacity by Voltage Drop during Motor Starting (PG2)

The capacity (PG2) when considering momentary voltage drop caused by starting of largest
motor:
TITLE: EMERGENCY DIESEL GENERATOR SIZING CALCULATIONS

PG2 = {(1- d x C x QL
Where
= Allowable momentary voltage drop [V]
= 0.15
X’d = Direct-axis transient reactance of Generator
= 0.25
QL = Largest Motor Starting Load
C = Factor for Starting Method
= 0.67 (for Star Delta Starting)

Taking Instrument air Generation unit as largest motor load (90kW)

QL = 6 x kVA = 6 x (90/.8)
= 675 kVA

By putting values
PG2 = {(1-0.15) x 0.25 x 0.67 x 675}/0.15
PG2 = 641 kVA

2.3 Capacity Considering Generator Overload Capability (PG3)

The capacity (PG3) when considering over current capacity of a generator is calculated by
the following formula:

PG3 = [{ W 0 + (QLmax x Cosø)}/K] [kVA]

Where
PG3 = Generator Capacity [kVA]
= Summation of Operating Load
= 617.8 kW
Cosø = Starting Power factor of Squirrel cage induction motors
= 0.2
K = Over current capacity of generator
= 1.1
QLmax = Starting Capacity of Largest Squirrel cage induction motor [kVA]
= 6 x kVA = 6 x (90/.8)
= 675 kVA

By putting values
PG3 = 617.8 + (675 x 0.2)}/1.1 x 0.8
PG3 = (617.8 + 135)/0.88
PG3 = 856 kVA

3 CONCLUSION OF DIESEL GENSET SIZING CALCULATIONS

Based on above calculation considering different scenario PG3 has the highest value, so
PG3 with 20 % contingency = 856 x 1.2
= 1027 kVA
Capacity of Emergency Diesel Generator Set at Site = 1027 kVA

= 821.3 kW (at 0.8 p.f)
