Assignment on sampling distribution

1. The time between two arrivals in a queuing model is normally distributed with
a mean 2 minutes and standard deviation 0.25 minutes. If a random sample
of size 36 is drawn, what is the probability that the sample mean will be
greater than 2.1 minutes
2. The mean length of life of a certain cutting tool is 41.5 hours with a standard
deviation of 2.5 hours. What is the probability that a simple random sample
of size 50 drawn from this population will have a mean between 40.5 hours
and 42 hours.
3. A diameter of a component produced on a semi automatic machine is known
to be distributed normally with the mean of 10mm and a standard deviation
of 0.1 mm. If we pick up a random sample of size 5 what is the probability
that the sample mean will be between 9.95mm and 10.05mm.
4. The population mean annual salary for plumbers is 46,700. A random sample
of 42 plumber is drawn from this population. What is the probability that the
mean salary of the sample is greater than 44,000. Assume standard deviation
equal to 5600
5. the mean height of women in the US(ages 20 to 29) is 64.1 inch. The
standard deviation of height for these women is 2.71 inches. Assuming that
the heights are normally distributed find the following:
a) the probability of randomly selecting a woman with a height less than 66
inches
b) the probability of the sample of 10 women have a mean height less than
66 inches
6. At birth, babies average 7.8 lbs with standard deviation of 2.1 lbs. A random
sample of 34 babies born to mothers living near a factory that may be
polluting the air and water shows a mean weight of only 7.2 lbs. Is that
unusually low?
7. A random sample of size 100 is taken from a population whose mean is 60
and variance is 400. Calculate the probability that the mean of the sample
will not differ from µ equal to 60 by more than 4?
8. A distribution with unknown mean has variance of 1.5, find how large a
sample should be taken from the distribution in order that the probability will
be at least 0.95 that the sample mean will be within 0.5 of the population
mean.
9. The average age at first marriage is 25 for women and 27.8 for men in the
US. If the standard deviation for women is 4 years what is the probability that
a random selection of 32 women have an average age at first marriage
between 26 and 27.
10.The average salary for a MBA graduate is $64,140 with a standard deviation
of $18,405. Find the probability that a group of 31 randomly selected MBA
graduates has an average salary higher than $74,000 per year
11.The average time to graduate from California State University with a
bachelor’s degree in 2008 was 4.68 years. If the standard deviation is 1.5
years find the probability that a random sample of 40 graduates from the
university finished between four and five years
12.The duration of XYZ disease from the onset of symptoms until death ranges
from 3 to 20 years, the average is 8 years with the standard deviation of four
years. The administrator of a large medical centre randomly selects the
medical records of 30 deceased XYZ patients from the Medical Center
database and records the average duration. Find the approximate probability
for these events:
a) the average duration is less than seven years
b) the average duration exceeds 7 years
c) the average duration lies within one year of the population mean µ equal to
8.
