SECTION 7
DESCENT AND DRIFTDOWN
7.1 INTRODUCTION
This section presents descent data for the Dash 8, Model 400, 401 and 402 airplanes. Time, distance
and fuel in descent are given for three techniques: Type I (high speed), Type II (intermediate speed)
and Type III (low speed). In addition, the time, distance and fuel in driftdown (following an enroute enĆ
gine failure) are given for various weights altitudes and temperatures.
7.2 USE OF CHARTS
The use of charts is illustrated by examples", which are depicted as arrowed broken lines.
EXAMPLE 1
Given: Temperature = ISA -20_ C
Aircraft Weight = 18,000 kg (39,680 lb)
Find: The time, distance and fuel in a Type I (high speed) descent from 20,000 to 5,000 ft.
From figure 7-1: Since the data are given relative to sea level, the time, distance and fuel are calculated
as follows:
Time Distance Fuel
(Min) (nm) (kg) (lb)
Descent from 20,000 ft to sea level 16.0 82.0 252 555
Descent from 5,000 ft to sea level 2.9 11.0 31 68
Therefore, descent from 20,000 to 5,000 ft 13.1 71.0 221 487
EXAMPLE 2
Given: Temperature = ISA +20_ C
Aircraft Weight = 28,000 kg (61,730 lb)
Find: The time, distance and fuel in driftdown from 22,000 ft to 15,000 ft.
From figure 7-9: Since the data are given relative to 25,000 ft, the time, distance and fuel are calculated
as follows:
Time Distance Fuel
(Min) (nm) (kg) (lb)
Driftdown from 25,000 ft to 15,000 ft 36 130 410 905
Driftdown from 25,000 ft to 22,000 ft 5 20 50 110
Therefore, driftdown from 22,000 ft to 15,000 ft 31 110 360 795
