Exercise 8.3
Q.1 Which is greater?
(a) 0.3 or 0.4
(b) 0.07 or 0.02
(c) 3 or 0.8
(d) 0.5 or 0.05
(e) 1.23 or 1.2
(f) 0.099 or 0.19
(g) 1.5 or 1.50
(h) 1.431 or 1.490
(i) 3.3 or 3.300
(j) 5.64 or 5.603

Solution:
We will be using the concepts of inequalities to solve this.
(a) 0.3 or 0.4
We know that, 0.3 = 3/10, 0.4 = 4/10 and 3/10 < 4/10.
Thus, 0.4 is greater than 0.3
(b) 0.07 or 0.02
As we know, 0.07 = 7/100, 0.02 = 2/100 and 7/100 > 2/100
Thus, 0.07 is greater than 0.02.
(c) 3 or 0.8
3 is greater than 1 and 0.8 is lesser than 1.
Hence, 3 is greater than 0.8.
(d) 0.5 or 0.05
0.5 can also be written as 0.50.
Hence, 0.50 = 50/100, 0.05 = 5/100.and 50/100 > 5/100,
Hence, 0.5 > 0.05
(e) 1.23 or 1.2
As 1.23 = 123/100, 1.2 = 12/10 = 120/100 and 123/100 > 120/100
Hence, 1.23 > 1.2
(f) 0.099 or 0.19
As 0.099 = 99/1000, 0.19 = 190/1000 and 190/1000>99/1000
Thus, 0.19 > 0.099.
(g) 1.5 or 1.50
As 1.5 = 15/10 = 150/100, 1.50 = 150/100.
The values obtained are equal, so 1.5 = 1.50.
(h) 1.431 or 1.490
We know that, 1.431 = 1431/1000, 1.490 = 1490/1000 and 1431/1000 <
1490/1000
Thus, 1.490 > 1.431.
(i) 3.3 or 3.300
3.3 can be expressed as 3.3 = 3.300 = 3300/1000, 3.300 = 3300/1000
Since their values are equal, 3.3 = 3.300.
(j) 5.64 or 5.603
5.64 = 5.640 = 5640/1000, 5.603 = 5603/1000 and 5640/1000 > 5603/1000
Hence, 5.64 is greater than 5.603.

Q.2 Make five more examples and find the greater number from them.

Solution:
Five more examples are
(a) 1.7 or 1.72
In the given numbers the whole parts for both the numbers are the same
that is 1. The tenth part of both the numbers is also equal that is 7, but the
hundredth part of 1.72 is greater than that of 1.7.
Hence, 1.72 > 1.7
(b) 1.8 or 1.009
The whole part of both the numbers is equal that is 1. But the tenth part of
1.8 is greater than 1.009.
∴ 1.8 > 1.009
(c) 1.07 or 1.073
Here both the numbers have the same parts up to the hundredth digit that
is 1.07. But the thousandth part of 1.073 is greater than that of 1.07.
∴ 1.073 > 1.07
(d) 2.12 or 1.89
The whole part of the numbers is not equal. The whole part of the number
2.12 is 2 and is greater than that of 1.89.
∴ 2.12 > 1.89
(e) 3.09 or 2.085
Here the whole part of number 3.09 is 3 which is greater than that of 2.085.
∴ 3.09 > 2.085

Q.4 Nasreen bought 3 m 20 cm cloth for her shirt and 2 m 5 cm cloth for
her trouser. Find the total length of cloth bought by her.

Solution:
We will be using the concept of decimals to solve this.
Length of cloth in metres bought for the shirt = 3 m 20 cm = (3 + 20/100) m
= 3.20 m
Length of cloth in metres bought for the trouser = 2 m 5 cm = (2 + 5/100) m
= 2.05 m
So, total length of cloth bought by her = 3.20 m + 2.05 m = 5.25 m
Q.5 Naresh walked 2 km 35 m in the morning and 1 km 7 m in the
evening. How much distance did he walk in all?

Solution:
We will be using the concept of decimals to solve this.
Distance covered in kilometres by Naresh in the morning = 2 km 35 m = (2 +
35/1000) km = 2.035 km.
Distance covered in kilometres by Naresh in the evening = 1 km 7 m = (1 +
7/1000) km = 1.007 km
Therefore, Total distance walked by him in all = (2.035 + 1.007) km = 3.042
km
Q.6 Sunita travelled 15 km 268 m by bus, 7 km 7 m by car and 500 m on
foot to reach her school. How far is her school from her residence?

Solution:

We use the concepts of decimals, unit conversion and addition to find out how
far is Sunita’s school from her residence.
We know that,
Distance travelled by Sunita by bus = 15 km 268 m
Since 1000 m = 1 km,
268 m = 268/1000 km = 0.268 km
Therefore, distance travelled by Sunita by bus = 15 km + 0.268 km =
15.268 km
Distance travelled by Sunita by car = 7 km 7 m
Since 1000 m = 1 km,
7 m = 7/1000 km = 0.007 km
Therefore, distance travelled by Sunita by car = 7 km + 0.007 km = 7.007
km
Distance travelled by Sunita on foot = 500 m
Since 1000 m = 1 km,
500 m = 500/1000 km = 0.50 km
Therefore, distance travelled by Sunita by car = 0.50 km
We know that Sunita travelled by bus, car and on foot to reach her school
from her residence.
Therefore, the distance between her school and her residence = Distance
travelled by Sunita by bus + Distance travelled by Sunita by car + Distance
travelled by Sunita on foot
= 15.628 km + 7.007 km + 0.50 km
= 22.775 km
Therefore, Sunita’s school is 22.775 km away from her residence.

Q.7 Ravi purchased 5 kg 400 g rice, 2 kg 20 g sugar and 10 kg 850g flour.

Find the total weight of his purchases.

Solution:
We use the concepts of decimals, unit conversion and addition to find out how
far is Sunita’s school from her residence.
We know that,
Weight of rice purchased by Ravi = 5 kg 400 g
Since 1000 g = 1 kg,
400 g = 400/1000 kg = 0.4 kg
Therefore, weight of rice purchased by Ravi = 5 kg + 0.4 kg = 5.4 kg
Weight of sugar purchased by Ravi = 2 kg 20 g
Since 1000 g = 1 kg,
20 g = 20/1000 kg = 0.02 kg
Therefore, weight of sugar purchased by Ravi = 2 kg + 0.02 kg = 2.02 kg
Weight of flour purchased by Ravi = 10 kg 850 g
Since 1000 g = 1 kg,
850 g = 850/1000 kg = 0.85 kg
Therefore, weight of flour purchased by Ravi = 10 kg + 0.85 kg = 10.85 kg
We know that the total weight of Ravi’s purchases = Weight of rice
purchased by Ravi + Weight of sugar purchased by Ravi + Weight of flour
purchased by Ravi
= 5.4 kg + 2.002 kg + 10.85 kg
= 18.270 kg
Therefore, the total weight of Ravi’s purchases is 18.270 kg.
