Gingival Index

Gingival Index (GI) of Löe and Silness (1963):


1-This index measures the severity of gingivitis based on color, consistency,
and bleeding on probing.
2- Each tooth is examined at the mesial, lingual, distal and buccal surface.
3- Teeth and gingiva are dried and are examined under adequate light, using
a mouth mirror and blunt probe.
4- A blunt probe is used to press on the gingiva to determine its degree of
firmness, and to run along the soft tissue wall adjacent to the entrance to the
gingival sulcus to evaluate bleeding.
5-The excluded teeth are partially erupted, teeth with periapical lesion and
retained roots.

Score Criteria
0 No inflammation.
1 Mild inflammation, slight change in color, slight edema, no bleeding on
probing.
2 Moderate inflammation, moderate glazing, redness, edema and
hypertrophy, bleeding on probing.
3 Severe inflammation, marked redness and hypertrophy, ulceration,
tendency to spontaneous bleeding.

The interpretation:
0.1 - 1 Mild gingivitis
1.1 - 2 Moderate gingivitis
2.1 - 3 Severe gingivitis

Calculation:

GI = Total scores GI = Total scores
No. of surfaces exa. No. of subjects exa.

-The maximum score for gingival index is :

GI = Total scores GI = 3 ×4 × 6 = 3 × 24 = 3
No. of surfaces exa. 4 × 6 24
