1. Introduction
It is possible to change the NXT and AIM machines into a glue dispensing machine by
changing the placing head on a module to a GL head. This manual explains how to use the
GL head in production.

GL head features
1. Operators can easily change a standard placing module into a glue dispensing
machine by replacing the head with a GL head.
2. Optimal glue dispensing conditions are maintained using auto-calibration.
3. Optimal glue dispensing conditions are maintained using a temperature adjustment
function.
4. The remaining amount of glue can be easily checked at the operation panel on the
machine.
5. The GL head uses adjustment commands from manual mode at the machine and
[Module configuration] settings in Accessory Software.

at the machine.
Specify [Yes] to check the actual glue application according to the settings specified in
[Coordinate] – [Apply Check].
Specify [No] to not check the actual glue application.

5
4.1.4 Head Setup

Glue Name: Glue name

Needle: Needle name
Temperature: Application temperature (setting range: 25 - 45° C)
The optimum temperature should be set when applying new glue.
Pressure: Application pressure (setting range: 0 – 350 kPa)
The optimum pressure should be set when applying new glue.
Stroke Height: Stroke height during production (setting range: 4, 6, 8, 12 mm)
The cycle time can be reduced by setting a lower stroke height.
However, by setting a lower value, stringing may occur depending
on the glue viscosity and needle type used.
Upper Position Timer: Stop time at the upper limit position after applying glue (setting
range: 0.00 – 0.99 sec).
Lengthening the stop time will help prevent the glue thread from
toppling after the glue has been applied and has detached cleanly
from the needle.
Lower Position Timer: Stop time at the lower limit position after applying glue (setting
range: 0.00 – 0.99 sec).
Lengthening the stop time will help the glue adhere to the panel.

6
4.1.5 Feeder Setup
The glue check unit is Feeder Name: DT00A.
Set it at slot 14 (for both M3 and M6).

7
4.1.6 Mark Data settings
Specify the [Glue Mark] setting at [Glue Mark] – [Mark Data].

Mark Type: Specify [Glue].

Color for Glue Mark: Specify the glue color.
Diameter for Glue Mark: Specify the diameter of the dispensed glue dot.
(Setting range: 0.01 to 3.50 mm)
The glue diameter is offset with the specified value using the
glue check function.
The presence of glue is checked by viewing the internal area
of the specified diameter using the glue check function.
For twin needles, specify a diameter to dispense glue with one
needle.
Read Level for Glue Mark: Specify the CCD level that determines the mark reference.
Scan Area for Glue Mark: Specify the range to search for the mark.

8
4.1.7 Coordinate
Make the necessary coordinate settings in the [Coordinate] pane from the [Top] tab.

Type: Specify the sequence type

Dummy: Trial dot sequence
When starting production and time elapses after the previous glue application
due to such things as waiting for the panel, glue application is tested. Any
variance in the glue application is checked by testing the application condition
repeatedly as well as the condition of the needle tip.
The module allocation is determined by the coordinates at which the glue is
dispensed.
Create this setting at the beginning of a sequence.

Check: Glue check sequence

This setting checks the amount of dispensed glue. Use this setting to correct the
glue application pressure for a standard dispensing sequence.
One or more entries for this setting must be made to use calibration.
The module allocation is determined by the coordinates at which the glue is
dispensed.
Create this setting after a [Dummy] sequence.

Apply: Standard glue dispensing sequence

This specifies a glue dot application.
Create this setting after a [Dummy] and [Check] sequence.
After creating a [Dummy] and [Check] sequence, select [Generate Glue].

Line: Line application sequence

Note: Line application and glue check sequences are not supported.

9
Pos X/Pos Y: Specify a coordinate to dispense glue.
If [Type] is set as [Dummy], specify an area to test the glue on the panel.
If [Type] is set as [Check], specify an area to test the glue on the panel.
If [Type] is set as [Apply], specify a position to dispense glue on the panel.

Glue Time: Specify the application time (0 – 99 (1/100 seconds)

Specify the same time for the [Glue Time] in the sequence with [Type] set to
[Check]. When the [Glue Time] for the [Check] sequence is dispensed with
a set pressure, specify a time for the reference diameter.
Note: Refer to 4.1.6 “Mark data settings” for details on the reference diameter.

Glue Name: Enter the glue name

Note: Refer to 4.1.4 “Head setup settings” for details on the glue name.

Needle: Enter the name of the needle used to dispense glue.

If this is not specified, a needle selection dialog box is displayed when the
job is optimized.
Refer to 4.1.8 “Optimization and insert order settings” for details on the glue
name.

Style: This displays the type of needle used to dispense glue.

Select the needle to update the values set in the spec data.

Diameter: This displays the diameter of the needle used to dispense glue.
Select the needle to update the values in the spec data.

Mark Name: Enter the name of the Glue Mark used when performing vision processing.
This is required if the sequence type is [Check].
This is required if the sequence type is [Apply] and [Apply Check] is set to
[Yes].

Height Offset: Specify the height offset for applicable sequences (Z0 reference)
Line Length: This is not supported
Line Direction: This is not supported
Apply Speed: This is not supported

10
Apply Check: When the sequence type is [Apply], specify whether to check the actual
glue application.
Select [Yes] to dispense glue and check the actual glue application.
Select [No] to only dispense glue.
Note: If the [Process Option]-[Do Apply Check] is set to [No], the actual glue
application check does not function.

Main Mark/Sub Mark/Sub Mark1/Sub Mark2:

Specify Fiducial marks to reference.
The Main Mark and Sub Mark settings are required.

Note: Manually assign the glue sequence to the NXT.

11
4.1.8 Optimization and insert order settings
When assigning sequences to the NXT, add sequences with the module number set to
[None] in the [Insert Order] setting. When the job is optimized with the following conditions,
the needle selection box (see below) is displayed.
• A needle name was not set in the [Coordinate]-[Needle] setting.
• The [Insert Order]-[Module number] setting is [None].

Select the needle and allocate a glue head which is not being used.
The needle name allocated at the [Coordinate]-[Needle] setting is then set.
The module number allocated at the [Insert Order]-[Module number] setting is then set.

When the job is optimized and the needle name is set in advance at the
[Coordinate]-[Needle] setting, the sequence is automatically allocated to a module with a
matching needle.
Also, if the job is optimized with the module number entered for a module already set in the
[Insert Order]-[Module] setting, the needle name for the module allocated to the
[Coordinate]-[Needle] setting is automatically set.

12
Check the glue insert order settings in the [Insert Order] pane from the [Top] tab.

Module: Set the module used to dispense the glue.

When the job is optimized, the sequence is automatically allocated to a module wit a
matching needle.

4.1.9 Cautions for creating jobs

The following cautions apply when creating jobs.
(1)
Group creation does not support the creation of dummy or check sequences. Therefore,
when using Apply glue sequences, the existing Dummy and Check sequences must be
deleted so that Apply sequences are created. (It is possible to select whether to delete the
existing Apply sequences when using “glue creation”).
Therefore, when creating sequences, first create Apply sequences followed by Check and
Apply.
(2)
For version of Fuji Flexa prior to V4.0.0, when optimization was performed, the [Insert
Order] is used as the creation order (Apply, Dummy then Check). Manually change the
insert order to Dummy, Check then Apply. The process for changing the order to Dummy,
Check and then Apply for the insert order during optimization was supported from V4.0.0).
(3)
1. Glue sequences assigned to the NXT should be manually allocated.
(4)
2. Line balance cannot be performed if a GL machine is also used on the same line.

13
4.2. Manual Commands
Send the job to the machine and perform changeover for production.

4.2.1. Changing heads using the changeover guidance.

If no GL head is installed on the module, guidance to change to a GL head is displayed.
Change the head by following the guidance procedures.
Also, change the nozzle station and install a cover on the parts camera.

4.2.2. Changing needles with the manual command.

After a GL head is installed on the module, it is necessary to change the needle. Use
manual command to perform needle changeover. At the manual mode screen, select the
exchange command and then push OK.

16
4.2.5. Measuring needle offsets with the manual command

Command summary
This command measures the calibration data for the GL head.
This measurement can be performed again even after completing calibration data
measurements using auto-calibration. Furthermore, the values measured with this
command are stored in memory to complete the measurement. Therefore, auto-calibration
is not performed again after using the manual command to measure the needle offsets.
The sequence data used for measuring is the first sequence found for which the [Type] is
“Check” when performing a search in ascending order (Seq. No.) in job areas 1 and 2.

Usage conditions
• A job using glue application must be sent to the machine.
• At least one sequence with sequence [Type] set to [Check] must exist.
• The glue head must be attached.
• There must be a sufficient amount of glue remaining.
• The production mode cannot be set to idle mode.
Note: Refer to the job settings page for values to enter for setting sin the job.

Procedure
Select the needle offset measurement with the arrow keys and the push START. Glue is
dispensed onto the glue check unit and calibration data is measured.

Note: When a search is performed for the measurement data using the selected job in
ascending order (SeqNo), “Check” data is used for the sequence type that is located first.

Dispense glue on the glue check unit, acquire an image of the glue dots and then measure
the area.
The application conditions should be as follows. (Refer to 4.4. Changing Measurement
Settings in Accessory Software)

19
Application Time:
Determined based on the job setting × module configuration setting for a percentage of the
application [Glue time].

Application Pressure:
When the module function setting [Job glue pressure: Enable/Disable] is enabled, then the
setting in the job is used at the machine. If this is disabled, then the module setting
overrides the job setting.

Application Height:
Glue is dispensed using the height specified in the job.

After the measurement is complete, push MONITOR to display the acquired image and
check the glue area.
Once the area has been confirmed, push CANCEL to complete the command.

20
4.3. Production
4.3.1. Waiting for the temperature to be adjusted
The machine waits for the glue to reach the specified temperature setting when
commencing production or performing manual commands (glue reference value
measurement, needle offset measurement)
Refer to the “4.4.1. Adjusting the volume of the glue applied” section for details on
temperature settings.
During operation, the specified temperature settings and current temperature status
displays.

During production During manual commands

The current temperature and pressure settings are displayed.

The upper value is the temperature setting (Celsius) and the lower value is the pressure
(kPa).

Temperature status
Normal: ±1° C of the specified temperature setting. Production can begin at this status.

Abnormal: ±3° C of the specified temperature setting. Production stops if the glue reaches
this temperature.
Δ indicates +3° C and ∇ indicates -3° C.

21
Warning: Occurs when the temperature is between +1° C to +3° C with respect to the
specified setting temperature.
Production continues even if a warning occurs.
Δ indicates +3° C to +1° C and ∇ indicates -1° C to -3° C.

Temperature control function OFF: Operation continues even when the temperature is
outside the specified temperature setting range.
However, temperature control is not performed and therefore there is a possibility that the
specified glue amount is not applied.
Note: Refer to “4.4.3. Turning the temperature adjustment function ON/OFF”.

4.3.2. The amount of glue in the syringe

The amount of glue in the syringe is displayed at the production screen.

78.5 (Full) to 34.5 mm → 34.4 to 31.5 mm → 31.4 to 28.5 mm→

→ 28.4 (Full) to 25.5 mm → 25.4 to 22.0 mm → Error stop

An error stop occurs when no glue remains in the syringe.
Replace the syringe using the nozzle exchange command (see 4.2.2.).

22
4.3.3. Using Auto-calibration
Auto-calibration is necessary to maintain optimal glue dispensing conditions during
production. The glue check unit is required to measure auto-calibration because glue must
be dispensed on the unit. Furthermore, the glue application conditions change depending
on the glue and needle used. Therefore, refer to the [Check] sequence in the job for
required data to determine the needle and glue type. At least one check sequence must
exist in the job.

4.3.4. Glue check (offsetting the amount of glue)

During production, an image is taken of sequences with a [Type] setting of “Check”. The
dispensing pressure is offset so that glue dots have the standard diameter.
• When a glue dot diameter is compared to the standard diameter, the average of
consecutive “Check” sequences is used.
• Detailed glue check settings can be made in the module configuration settings.
• *See “4.4.6. Adjusting the glue check function” for more details.
• The vision processing results of sequences where a glue stringing error stop occurred
are not considered.
• If a vision processing error or glue check error stop occur, glue pressure is not
corrected. When necessary, use the manual mode Glue status check command to
check the current glue diameter and then adjust the glue pressure in the module
configuration settings.
• Any correction made to the glue pressure by the glue check is cleared in the following
situations.

1. The job is changed to a job with a different name.

2. The job is changed to a job with the same name but one or more of the following
has changed: the glue pressure, the glue time or the reference diameter of a
“Check” sequence.
3. The glue pressure offset or glue time is changed in the module configuration
settings.
4. The power for the head is turned off (during head exchange or syringe/needle
exchange)
5. The power is turned off.

23
4.3.5. Actual glue check (checking for the presence of dispensed glue)
During production, an image is taken before and after glue application using the mark
camera to check if any glue is missing. The color (grey) is measured after applying glue
and if the grey value changes by 10 or more points, it can be determined that glue has
been dispensed.
There are cases in which the presence of dispensed glue cannot be checked because of
the color of the panel. The color (grey) cannot be changed.

4.3.5.1. Job settings

1. Specify [Yes] for [Do Apply Check] at the [Machine configuration]-[Process Option]
setting.
2. Specify [Yes] for the [Apply Check] setting of the [Apply] sequence at the [Coordinate]
settings. Specify [No] for the [Apply Check] setting to not check the actual glue
application of the glue dot.
3. At the [Coordinate] setting, enter the name of the glue mark at [Mark Name] for the
[Apply] sequence. If the glue dot is the same size as the glue check, specify the same
name as the glue check. If the size is different, create a new glue mark and enter the
diameter of the glue application and specify the name for this mark.

24
4.3.5.2. Actual glue application check error
When it is detected that glue is missing during the actual glue application check,
production stops and error guidance is displayed for the actual glue application check.

Push MONITOR from the error guidance screen to check the status of the glue application.

If the glue application is bad

Follow the error guidance and remove the panel.
Next, from manual mode use the air removal command and then the glue dispensing
check command. Adjust the glue and/or needle accordingly. After making this adjustment,
resume production by inserting the next panel to begin glue application.

If no glue has been dispensed but a recovery is performed by dispensing glue again
Push READY ON without removing the panel.
Next, from manual mode use the air removal command and then the glue dispensing
check command. Adjust the glue and/or needle accordingly. After making this adjustment,
resume production by dispensing the glue dot again that was causing the problem.

If glue application is normal

It cannot be determined that the glue application is normal for the area of the glue dot if the
color of the dot does not changed in comparison with the panel color (the grey value
difference). Use MEdit to correct the job by changing the [Apply Check] setting for the glue
dot to [No]. After sending the job to the machine, resume production by dispensing glue
from the next glue dot. A check for the actual glue application for this glue dot is not
performed for the next panel in production.

25
4.4. Changing Measurement Settings in Accessory Software
Select [Module Configuration] and select the glue application control settings from the
[Category] drop-down list.

4.4.1. Adjusting the volume of the glue applied

This setting is used to set the length of time the glue valve turns ON when performing air
removal.
Setting range: 0 – 3000 s

Air removal pressure

This setting is used to set the application pressure when performing air removal.
Setting range: 0 – 350 kPa

4.4.3. Turning the temperature adjustment function ON/OFF

This turns on and off error monitoring of the glue temperature adjustment control system.
ON: Temperature adjustment control is performed.
OFF: Temperature adjustment control is not performed.
Note: Refer to “4.3.1. Waiting for the Temperature Adjustment Setting Temperature”.

27
4.4.4. Adjusting the glue check unit height
This is used to adjust the height when glue cannot be applied properly to the trial dot area
due to small inaccuracies in the glue check unit assembly.

Glue check unit application height offset

Setting range: -5 – 10 mm (The offset is raised when a positive value is set.)

4.4.5. Adjusting the Z0 height

This is used to adjust the Z0 height when dispensing glue on panels.
Since the GL cannot use the Z0 height measurement during automatic calibration, this
setting is used instead.

Z-axis reference position offset

Setting range: -2 – 2 mm (The offset is raised when a positive value is set.)

4.4.6. Adjusting the glue check function

The following production-related glue check items can be adjusted: glue stringing error limit,
excess/insufficient glue error stop limit and the effective conditions of the glue check.

Glue check compensation coefficient

This is the compensation coefficient of the glue pressure value calculated by a glue check.
Setting range: 1 to 100%

Glue check compensation threshold

This is the threshold for the glue check to perform glue pressure compensation.
The glue pressure is compensated when the glue area of a glue check sequence is larger
or smaller than the reference surface area by the percentage set here.
Setting range: 1 to 100%

Glue check error stop limit

This is the threshold for error stops when the glue check function does not perform glue
pressure compensation.
An error stop occurs when the surface area of the glue check sequence is larger or smaller
than the reference surface area by the percentage set here.
Setting range: 1 to 100%

28
