Welcome to Psychology 102. These pages constitute the course syllabus and provide the
information you will need for this course.
Psychology 101 along with Psychology 102 are prerequisites for upper-level psychology
courses at UFV. The 100 level courses are intended to provide students with general
knowledge about basic areas of Psychology. Psychology 101 familiarizes students with
major findings and issues associated with such topics as biological psychology, sensation,
perception, consciousness, learning, memory, cognition, language, and social
psychology.
Text: Passer, M. W., Smith, R. E., Atkinson, M. L., Mitchell, J. B. (2023). Psychology:
Frontiers and Applications. (8th Canadian ed.). Toronto, Ontario: McGraw-Hill Ryerson.
Associated with your text book is “Connect”: Connect is is the latest version of
study materials available to assist students in this course. It is available in the
bookstore with the textbook, or on its own, which includes the e-book. The
standalone card is less expensive than the text/card option, but the e-book will
expire after 24 months of activation. Connect is not a requirement of the course but
may be useful to some students
Attached is a rough schedule of topics to be covered in each class session and the
accompanying text readings. Consider the schedule flexible as time taken to cover
material may vary from that outlined. Do try to read ahead so that you are prepared for
the material to be covered in lecture each week. As material will be covered in the
lectures that is not covered in the text attendance of lectures is strongly recommended.
Examinations and Assignments: You are expected to attend examinations. The only
exception to attending an examination is illness or other “exceptional” circumstance. If
possible, please let me know beforehand if you are not likely able to attend an exam
session.
Make-up Exams are Short Answer/Essay in FORMAT!: No multiple choice
You are expected to attend the final exam on the scheduled time and date. Do not book
holidays/trips prior to the end of the official exam period (August 6 to 14th 2024) as this
will not be accommodated.
2
Late/Missed Assignments: Students are required to complete all course components.
Late assignments will be docked 10% per day late. Assignments are on Blackboard.
Illness and Bereavement Accommodations:
If you are feeling ill (e.g. fever, sore throat, cough, nausea and/or vomiting) please DO
NOT come to your in person class. The Blackboard site (MyClass) for this course has
the course schedule, class content outlines, assignment instructions, and quizzes, so you
can keep up with your coursework. I do not take attendance. There is no penalty for
missing classes.
During this term, short term medical illnesses do not require medical notes. This length of
time has not been specifically defined, but it is considered to be a reasonable amount of
time for a minor illness, such as a few days for a flu or up to a week for more severe
conditions. You will still need to contact me to submit a form declaring you are ill

guidelines/[Link]
Although the form says it is for face-to-face classes, it can also be used if you are missing
an online evaluation.
“By submitting this form, I hereby declare that I missed the course requirements listed
above for the reasons stated. I understand that a record of this declaration may be kept on
file. I acknowledge that this is not an exemption from any exams, papers, or projects that
were missed during the time of my absence. I understand and acknowledge that making a
false declaration would constitute academic misconduct and could be subject to sanctions
under UFV’s Student Academic Misconduct (70) policy.”
In most situations, bereavement of an immediate family member can be supported by the
standard certificate provided by the funeral home. The length of bereavement leave is
generally the same length used by the government, which is 5 working days (a calendar
week). This can be extended by a few days for unusual circumstances. Students are
expected to make up any missed work soon after returning to classes. Please contact me
with any questions and to arrange accommodations.
Options for students with long term illness or difficulties arising from bereavement:
If you find you are unable to return to schoolwork, there are several options.
If it is within the withdrawal period, you can withdraw from the course.

If it past the withdrawal date, you can apply for a late withdrawal due to
extenuating circumstances. [Link]

If you could complete with some accommodation (for example, if your illness has
resulted in a physical change that makes coursework difficult), you can contact
the Centre for Accessibility to discuss assistance.
If you are uncertain how to proceed or wish to ask for a different solution, then I
am happy to refer you to the Associate Dean of Arts for Students, or the Director
of Student Services.

Check in with UFV's Counselling Services. In addition to UFV counsellors, their
page also lists other mental wellness resources [Link]
Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Students not familiar with what does or does not
constitute plagiarism should consult the UFV calendar or speak with the course
instructor.
Academic Misconduct Policy (Policy 70) and related issues
For any copying in assignments that does not give credit to the source (with a
citation), I am required to report the incident and it will be penalized as academic
misconduct under Policy 70. If the issue is minor (e.g. incorrect format), then I can
use the faculty-led process and just give a warning, though points will be lost for
not completing the assignment correctly. If the problem is major, for example,
copying a sentence from a journal article without putting it in quotes (or just
rearranging words in the sentence) and not giving a citation, or the same repeated
error, then I am expected to use Policy 70 to forward the case details to the
Registrar on a Notice of Misconduct that will be included in the UFV Conduct
Registry. The penalty will range from a zero for the whole assignment to a zero for
the course, and may require you to attend an Academic Integrity workshop. If you
already have an entry in the Conduct Registry (or it is a repeated offence in this
course), the penalty will be more stringent than lost points. For the first one or two
offences, there is usually no notation on your transcript. If the offence is very
serious, or if it is a third or greater offence, then you may receive an Fd on your
transcript, which means the course was failed due to a disciplinary action.
Evaluation
Midterm I 25% Midterm II 25% Final Exam 36%

You are required to complete a research credit worth 4% of your final grade. You will
receive a handout detailing the research credit in the first month of classes.
* The final exam will be non-cumulative though many concepts covered prior to the
final will be assumed. Exams will be multiple choice and short answer in format.
* Details of the Learning Assignment will be provided in a handout and discussed in

Letter Grades will be assigned using the following guideline:

Please feel free to ask questions or state topic-related opinions during the lectures. Many
people find it a little scary to speak up in front of a group, but if you do you will find

other students often appreciate your questions and comments. To assist in this process it
is expected that all students maintain courteous behaviour towards others in the class.
Any problems or difficulties you may experience with the course should be directed to
me as soon as possible, during office hours, or by contacting me via one of the means
listed above.
International Peer Support provides academic and personal support to first year students
who need assistance navigating through their introductory courses. The program, open to
both international and domestic students, consists of peer supporters who have specific
course content knowledge and can guide students with assignment or academic integrity
questions. They can help clarify course work expectations and direct students to the
relevant resources available on campus. International Peer Support can proactively help
students be successful. For more information, contact artspeers@[Link].
Priority Access for Student Services (PASS):
Priority Access to Student Supports (PASS) is an online service that enables
instructors to identify and assist students who are struggling or at risk of falling behind.
PASS provides early intervention so small problems don’t turn into large problems and
students connect to the resources they need. Referrals to PASS land in the Student
Support Centre, where a Student Support Coordinator will reach out and provide support.
Common reasons to refer to PASS:
decrease in quality of work
disruptive behaviour in class
missed multiple assignments
no-show for three or more classes or sessions
change in mood which may include anxiety, aggression, depression or distress
does not have materials to work in class
comments of concern from other students
situational factors such as death of a loved one, financial difficulties, food
insecurity, or culture shock

- DID I MISS ANYTHING?
Question Frequently Asked by Students After Missing A Class:
Nothing. When we realized you weren’t here
we sat with our hands folded on our desks
in silence, for the full three hours
Everything. I gave an exam worth
40 percent of the grade for this term
and assigned some reading due today
on which I’m about to hand out a quiz
worth 50 percent
Nothing. None of the content of this course
Has value or meaning
Take as many days off as you like:
any act activities we undertake as a class
I assure you will not matter either to you or me
and are without purpose
Everything. A few minutes after we began last time
a shaft of light descended and an angel
or other heavenly being appeared
and revealed to us what each woman or man must do
to attain divine wisdom in this life and
the hereafter
This is the last time the class will meet
Before we disperse to bring this good news to all people on earth
Nothing. When you are not present
how could something significant occur?
Everything. Contained in this classroom
is a microcosm of human existence
assembled for you to query and examine and ponder
This is not the only place such an opportunity has been
Gathered
but it was one place
And you weren’t here
