Course: Mechanics of Fluids Maximum marks: 100

Course Code: 22AE33 Duration: 03 hours
Semester: III

Note: i) Answer any FIVE full questions. ii) Questions 1 and 2 are compulsory.
iii) Any missing data should be suitably assumed. iv) Verify the course code before
answering.
Q. No. Marks
1 a) Define 06
i) Density ii) Specific gravity iii) Specific volume
b) Develop an expression representing the pressure difference in the U-tube differential 07
manometer.
c) The right limb of a simple U-tube manometer containing mercury is open to the 07
atmosphere, while the left limb is connected to a pipe with a fluid of [Link]. 0.9 is flowing.
The centre of the pipe is 12 cm below the mercury level in the right limb. Compute the
pressure of the fluid in the pipe if the difference in mercury level in the two limbs is
20 cm.

2 a) Explain the types of flow with a mathematical representation. 06

b) Develop the continuity equation for one-dimensional flow and Cartesian coordinates. 07
c) A horizontal venturi meter with inlet and throat diameters 30 cm and 15cm 07
respectively is used to measure the water flow. The reading of the differential
manometer connected to the inlet and the throat is 20cm of mercury.
Examine the rate of flow. Take Cd = 0.98.

3 a) Define i) Superimposed flow ii) Source and sink flow iii) Doublet 06
b) Develop the steam and velocity potential function of uniform flow 14
i) Parallel to y axis ii) Parallel to x axis
OR
4 a) Outline free vortex flow and provide the stream function and velocity potential 06
function of free vortex flow
b) Develop the streamline for a uniform flow of: 14
i) 5 m/s parallel to the positive direction of the x-axis.
ii) 10 m/s parallel to the positive direction of the y-axis

5 a) Summarize about the viscous flow and explain the role of Reynolds number with 06
example.
b) Derive Hagon Poiseullie Formula. 07
c) An oil of viscosity 0.1 Ns/m2 and relative density 0.9 is flowing through a circular pipe 07
of diameter 50 mm and of length 300 m. The rate of flow of fluid through the pipe is 3.5
liters. Compute the pressure drop in a length of 300 m and also the shear stress at the
pipe.
OR
6 a) Outline the minor losses cases in the pipes. 06
b) Develop the equation for loss of head due to the sudden enlargement. 07
c) Compute the diameter of a pipe of length 2000 m when the rate of flow of water
through the pipe is 200 litres/s and the head lost due to friction is 4m. Take the value 07
of C=50 in Chezy’s formulae.

7 a) Summarize the qualitative aspects of the viscous. 06
b) Develop an equation to represent for an unsteady, compressible and three dimensional 14
viscous flow (Navier-Stokes equations).
OR
8 a) Outline the role of viscosity in the flow reversal with diagram. 06
b) Investigate the development of boundary layer during flow over a flat plate with a neat 07
sketch and mark the various flow regimes.
c) Solve for the displacement thickness, the momentum thickness and energy thickness 07
for the velocity distribution in the boundary layer given by 𝑢/𝑈= 𝑦/𝛿, where u is the
velocity at a distance y from the plate and u= U at y= 𝛿 (boundary layer thickness). Also
calculate the value of 𝛿*/𝜃.
