Chapter 1
Introduction
Background of the study
Globally, one of the hardest subjects to teach and learn in secondary schools is
mathematics problem solving. Problem-solving has a special importance in the study
of mathematics (Wilson, Fernandez and Hadaway, 2011). The major objective of
teaching mathematical problem-solving to pupils is to help them acquire a general
skill in using mathematics in practical settings and addressing real-world problems. It
can also be applied as a teaching strategy to help students grasp things more deeply.
Solving mathematical puzzles successfully depending on a variety of variables and
abilities with various traits.
According to ( A.B.I., Bernardo, M.O., Cordel II, M.R.C., Lapinid, J.M.M.,
Teves, S.A., Yap & U.C., Chua) In the 2018 Programme for International Student
Assessment (PISA), Filipino students were among the lowest achievers compared to
students from other participating countries. In the subject of mathematics, less than
20% of students reached the minimum proficiency level (Level 2), while over 50%
exhibited extremely low proficiency (below Level 1). Scoring beneath the lowest
proficiency level in the PISA, it's evident that these Filipino students have been
significantly lagging in mathematics education; over half of this age group of Filipino
students possess insufficient mathematical skills compared to their counterparts in
other regions of the globe. The subpar performance in mathematics also differed
between students in public and private schools, with average scores of 343 and 395,
respectively (Department of Education 2019).
In Laak Institute Foundation Inc. there are several students in the 10th grade
who does not excel in the subject math. The students struggle to keep up with the flow
of topics regarding the subject of math. The students fail to understand the subject and
also struggle when they are face with schoolwork’s that relate to the subject. If we
consider the subjects that include at their grade level it is understandable that math
doesn’t only occupy that one subject math is on other subject such as science. With
the subjects that strangely has been conquered by the scope of math why would we be
surprised if two students find to cope with the overflowing pressure that emit from
that subject.
Statement of the problem
The problem to be addressed through this study is the Teaching Strategies in
mathematical problem solving and the engagement of students in G10 in LIFI.
Specific statements:
1.. To assess a person's aptitude for solving mathematical problems:
1.a. creating mathematical challenges
2.b List the components that are known.
3.c Elucidating or interpreting the resolution of a problem.
2. Pinpoint how 10th grade students can cope with the teacher's strategy and how
much of it can they comprehend.
3. How can the teaching strategies of the teacher's reach the students more.
4. Are the grade ten students able to stay engaged throughout the teaching of the
teacher.
Scope and Delimitation
The research can focus on: Analyzing students' problem-solving methods in
math class, especially using an open-ended approach. Assessing students' problem-
solving abilities and interest in math. Measuring students' problem-solving skills
before and after implementing specific teaching methods. Examining how problem-
solving strategies and strategy thinking can be incorporated into a typical classroom.
The research might be narrowed down to a particular grade level or age range.
Significance of the study
This study aims to determine the “Teaching Strategies in Mathematical Problem
Solving Skills and the Engagement of Grade 10 students in Laak Institute Foundation
Inc.”. This seeks to further discuss the phenomena that is being said.
The results of this study will be greatly beneficial to the following:
Students- Through the help of this research the students will be able enhance
their problem-solving skills and how they present themselves toward mathematics. It
also enables the students the tools they need to solve real world problems and use
arithmetic in practical settings.
Teachers- Through this study the teachers will be able to strategize how they
can further teach the students in a way the students are able to comprehend.
Researchers- Through this study, Researchers will assist them in gathering
various actions that shape the way the solution is implemented.
Future researchers- Future researchers will benefit from the study's outcome.
This work might serve as one of the foundations for a novel theory of learning.
