AUTOMATION
The Word Automation is made by combination of Automatic
and machine. It is a controlling system which replace humans
with machine and increases quality, efficiency and
Productivity.
• According to productiviy,
there are three types of automations
1. Hard (Fixed) Automation.
2. Soft (Flexible) Automation.
3. Programmable Automation.
INTRODUCTION OF PLC
• Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is an industrial computer
that monitors inputs, makes decisions based on its program and
controls outputs to automate a process or machine. • The
automation of many differant processes, such as controlling
mappings or factory assembly lines is done through the use of
small computers called a programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
HISTORY
• PLC was introduced in late 1960'sFirst commercial & successful
PLC was designed and developed by MODICON.
• Dick Morley was considered the 'Father' of Programmable Logic
Controller (PLC).
• Earlier, it was a machine with thousands of electronic parts.
• Later, in late 1970's, The microprocessor became reality &
greatly enhanced the role of plc permitting it to evolve form
simply relay to the sophisticated system as it is today
MAJOR COMPONENTS OF PLC
1. POWER SUPPLY
• The power supply provides power for the PLC system. Common power
levels used are 24V DC or 120 VAC
2. CONTROL PROCESSING UNIT(CPU)
• It is the brain of PLC and governs the activities of the entire PLC
systems The CPU consists of following blocks:
• Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU).
• Internal memory of CPU.
• Internal timers, counters and Flags.
3. Input Modules
• Carry signals from the process into the controller.
• Ex-Switches, Sensors etc.
4. Output Modules
• Convert control instructions a signal that can be used by
actuators.
• Ex-Motor, Indicator lamp.
5. Programming Devices
• The programming terminals is used for a programming the PLC
and monitaring PLC operations.
PLC PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES
Most common Languages encountered in PLC programming
are ;
Ladder Logic.
Functional Block Diagram.
Sequential Function Chart.
Boolean Algebra.
PROGRAMMING SOFTWARE
• TwidoSuite.

• Zelio Soft.
• ProWORX 32.
• Ecostruxure Control Expert.
• Modicon M168 Programming Software.
APPLICATIONS
• Transportation System likes Conveyor Belt System.
• Packing and Labeling System in Food & Beverage.
• Automatic Bottle or Liquid Filling System.
• Packaging and Labelling System in Pharma Industries.
• Transportation System like Escalator and Elevator.
• Industrial Crane Control System for Operation of Overhead Traveling Crane.

• Paper Industries for the production of Pages, Books or Newspapers, etc.
• Cement Industries for manufacturing or mixing the right quality and
quantities of raw materials, and accuracy of data regarding.
• Automatic Drainage Water Pump Monitoring and Controlling System
ADVANTAGES OF PLC
• Cost effective to control complex systems.
• Flexible and can be reapplied to control other systems quickly
and easily.
• Computer skills allow more sophisticated control.
• Troubleshooting accessories make programming easier and
reduce downtime.
• Reliable components make them work for years before failure.
• Less manpower for design.
• Downsizing and standardization .
• Improved maintainability.
