WHAT IS
CARBON FOOTPRINT ?
A carbon footprint is an environmental indicator
that represents the amount of greenhouse gases
(GHGs), expressed as CO2 equivalents, that are
emitted directly or indirectly as a result of a
specific activity.
Carbon Footprint is the total measure of
greenhouse gases released in the atmosphere.
Greenhouse gases (GHG) keep the earth warm and
make it habitable for living organisms.
An increase in carbon dioxide – a GHG, can lead to
increase in global temperature.
Carbon emissions can be natural or human-made.
Check your carbon footprint using carbon
footprint calculators and take measures to reduce
it.

CONTRIBUTING FACTORS
The major contributors to carbon footprints are: food consumption, transportation, and
household energy. Food is a major contributor to carbon footprints, and meat in particular is
an issue. Livestock is responsible for a significant amount of greenhouse gas emissions, and
beef is one of the biggest contributors.

your carbon footprint.
HOW IS CARBON FOOTPRINT CALCULATED?
Step 1: First, you must know how much CO2 is released from fuel, gas and
electricity.

Step 2: Collect household data

Petrol/Diesel: Add the total litres of fuel consumed in a year.
LPG: Your typical gas cylinder has a 14 kg gas weight. Multiply the number of
cylinders used in a year by 14.
Electricity: Find the number of units mentioned in your monthly electricity
bill. Multiply the monthly units by 12.
HOW IS CARBON FOOTPRINT CALCULATED?
Step 3: Multiple data by the respective CO2 emissions
Electricity: Input value X 0.85 = Output value in (Kg of CO2)
Petrol: Input Value X 2.296 = Output value in (Kg of CO2)
Diesel: Input Value X 2.653 = Output value in (Kg of CO2)
LPG: Input Value X 2.983 = Output value in (Kg of CO2)

Adding all four output values will give you your carbon Image source: research.aimultiple.com

footprint. Divide this value by 1000 and find the carbon

footprint in tonnes.

THE WORLD’S TOP 1% OF EMITTERS PRODUCE OVER
1000 TIMES MORE CO2 THAN THE BOTTOM 1%...
Globally, the top 10% of emitters were responsible for almost half of
global energy-related CO² emissions in 2021, compared with a mere
0.2% for the bottom 10%. The top 10% averaged 22 tonnes of CO² per
capita in 2021, over 200 times more than the average for the bottom
10%. There are 782 million people in the top 10% of emitters,
extending well beyond traditional ideas of the super rich. By
comparison, around 0.6% of the world – an estimated 46.8 million
individuals – are considered millionaires or billionaires.
The top 10% of emitters span all continents. Around 85% of them live
in advanced economies – including Australia, Canada, the European
Union, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, United States, and United Kingdom
– and also in China. The rest are from the Middle East, Russia, and
South Africa, in countries with relatively high income and wealth
inequality and emissions-intensive fuel mixes. The bottom 10% of

emitters globally live in developing economies in Africa and Asia,
where they consume relatively small amounts of goods and services,
and in many cases lack access to electricity and clean cooking.
SHARE OF GLOBAL CO² EMISSIONS BY COUNTRY
The distribution of emissions has changed significantly
over time. The UK was – until 1888 when it was overtaken
by the US – the world’s largest emitter. This was because
the UK was the first country to industrialize, a transition
that later contributed to massive improvements in living
standards for much of its population.Rising emissions and
living standards in North America and Oceania followed
soon after developments in the UK.
Many of the world’s largest emitters today are in Asia.
However, Asia’s rapid rise in emissions has only
occurred in very recent decades. This too has been a
by-product of massive improvements in living
standards: since 1950 life expectancy in Asia has Image source: https://ourworldindata.org/co2-emissions

increased by more than 30 years, it has seen a dramatic

fall in extreme poverty; and for the first time, most of
its population received formal education.

HOW CAN WE REDUCE IT ?
The next years will be decisive in our fight against climate change and
our success will certainly depend on our ability to reduce our carbon
footprint. Here are some tips to help you do that:
Choose responsible consumption, based on local products and
sustainable production and start growing produce in your own garden.
Get about using sustainable means of transport, such as public
transport, bicycle or on foot, and buy vehicles that are environment
friendly.
Choose a 100% renewable energy consumption, buy energy saving
appliances and control heating and air conditioning to save energy
Be aware and tell others about the importance of reducing carbon
footprint
Reduce waste, Reuse your packaging, Recycle it and if this is not
possible, dispose of it in the appropriate container.

CONCLUSION
Measuring carbon footprint could be a great starting point for
those who care about their impact on the environment. It is
important to understand where your carbon emissions come
from as there may be a lot of surprises.
By lowering your carbon footprint, you can help contribute to
the overall reduction of greenhouse gas emissions . In our fight
against climate change, everyone making small adjustments can
lead to big results.
