Unit Assignment-Unit 4

Unit Assignment: Present a business plan

In this assignment, you are going to participate in a role-play (2-4 students) in which you
present a plan for a new business that makes and sells a handmade product. Your
classmates will be potential investors in your business. As you prepare your
presentation, think about the Unit Question, "Why do people do things by hand?" Use
information from Listening 1, Listening 2, and your work in this unit to support your
presentation.
You are required to submit a video file in 3 to 5 minutes of your role-play.
Note: If you cannot find partners in your class, you can find someone outside. You can
include any tables, ppt files or notes for your plan in your video file or submission if you
want.
CONSIDER THE IDEAS
What kinds of handmade products would you be interested in making or selling?
Consider the products you have heard about in this unit, the images on page 99, and any
other handmade objects you can think of. Discuss these questions in a group.

1. What kinds of handmade products do you think would sell well? Why?
Who would buy them?
2. Would you be willing to invest money to support someone's business that was making
these products? Why or why not?
PREPARE AND SPEAK
A. GATHER IDEAS. Read the list of questions an investor might ask an entrepreneur
before lending him or her money to start a new business. Based on your discussion in the
Consider the Ideas activity, add a question to each list.

You and the product

2. How long have you been making this product?
3. How much experience do you have run a business?
The market
1. Who do you plan to sell your product to? In other words, who is your
target market?
2. Who else sells products like yours? In other words, who is your competition?
3. How will you advertise and market your product?
The deal
1. How much does it cost you to make the product, and how much will you
sell it for?
2. How much money do you need or want from an investor to help you start
your business?
3. How much of your profits are you willing to share with an investor?
B. ORGANIZE IDEAS Choose a handmade product for which you would like
to develop a business plan and get investors.

1. Prepare responses to the questions in Activity A. Are there any questions in the
list you might want to avoid answering? How will you avoid answering them?
2. Think about your presentation. How will you make it interesting for potential investors
(the class) and capture their attention?

C. SPEAK. Follow these steps.
