EXPLANATION:
This is the story ENGINE TROUBLE is truly an Indian story of unlucky draw. This story
describes how a prize created a lot of headache to narrator.
One day A show man came to the town with his Gaiety Land . Generally, the Gymkhana
grounds is used to celebrate festivals. Now, the Gymkhana ground seems to be so shiny and
attractive with banners and coloured lamps . Many people came to this ground from different
areas to see the shows. The narrator won a road engine at this show . He was very happy about
his fortune. Now the present problem is how to take the prize back home. It was very difficult
for him to move the engine. So he left it on the Gymkhana grounds . But the municipal
authorities aksed him to shift the road engine. But it was very difficult for him. So he agreed to
pay rent for three months. Now, he decided to sell it. But nobody came forward to buy it.
A cattle show came to town. They gave 24 hours time to remove the engine form the
ground. A temple elephant and 50 coolies were hired to shift this engine. But unluckily, the
engine went straight to the opposite wall and smashed it.
[Link] introduced a Swamiji who wants to perform different feats. He insisted on
having a road engine run over his chest. But the Municipal authorities did not know how to
arrange the engine. Now the narrator became a hero, because he has a road engine. The
crowd was watching tensely this feat. At that time,A police inspector came and said that the
feat should not be performed. Because the magistrate had issued an order prohibiting the
engine from running over him. So, swamiji has gone. Even driver also went from there without
moving road engine.
However, the nature rescued him in an unexpected way. The engine was thrown on the
mouth of a disused well. It fits just like a cap. The owner of the house was grateful to the
narrator for covering the well. The owner relieved from the harassment of the Municipal
authorities. This owner accepted to construct the compound wall. And also he agreed to pay his
expenditure of road engine. Thus, the narrator ultimately gets his share of the prize.

gain to the narrator and solved all his problems.
THE LAST LEAF
[Link]
INTRODUCTION:
This is the essay “The Last Leaf” written by ‘O. Henry’ . He was an American short story
writer. His stories are famous for surprise endings. Many of the stories taken place in New York
City and deal with ordinary people. ‘The Last Leaf’ takes place in Greenwich village, New York
City. It describes how the illusion (false impression) of a last leaf on the wall saves the life of a
young artist who is dying of pneumonia

EXPLANATION:
This story centers around Sue and Johnsy, the two young women artists. One day they
met in a restaurant. They discovered their shared taste in art. They decided to share a studio
apartment to live and work together. When winter came, Pneumonia attacks Johnsy. A doctor
visits her. Sue takes care about her friend.
In this story, Johnsy fancied herself to be as delicate as a decaying leaf. Sue sits beside
Jhonsy and working on an image for a magazine. At that time, Johnsy counts the leaves falling
from the plant outside her window. Johnsy claims when the last leaf falls to the ground she will
die. But Sue tells johnsy that she is being silly.
Sue goes to visit their downstairs neighbour, an old artist named Mr. Behrman. He
agrees to come up to their studio to pose for Sue’s picture. There is a violent storm during the
night. In the morning, When Sue pulls up the covering their window, the last leaf is still hanging
[Link] Johnsy thought that it would have fallen during the night and she will go too.
The next morning , after a violent storm, Johnsy sees the last remaining leaf still clinging
on to the branch. Johnsy decides that she wants to continue living. Johnsy recovers from her
illness. Doctor declares that Johnsy is on the path of recovery.
The doctor announced that he has to visit another patient in downstairs. Behrman has
caught pneumonia and needs to be taken to hospital. The next day Sue tells johnsy that
Behrman has died. The doctor finds him sick in his room dressed in cold , wet clothes . It
indicates that he had stayed out all night painting the image of a leaf that had survived the
storm.
Behrman’s great masterpiece is not a typical painting. He has painted a leaf on the wall
so realistic. Both Johnsy and Sue believed in it. It is truly the last leaf on the vine. The master
piece saves Johnsy’s life by returning her “will” to live.

CONCLUSION:
The twist is, Johnsy is not died but Behrman , who caught pneumonia while painting the
leaf and died. Thus the story highlights sacrifice, commitment, compassion, friend ship as well
as hope and dedication.
