Q. 01 a Differentiate between two-stroke and four-stroke I C Engines. L2 6
b Explain any two methods of calculating friction power in I C Engines. L2 6
c A gasoline engine working on four-stroke develops a brake power of 20.9 kW. A Morse L3 8
test was conducted on this engine and the brake power (kW) obtained when each cylinder
was made inoperative by short-circuiting the spark plug are 14.9, 14.3,14.8 and 14.5
respectively. The test was conducted at constant speed. Find the indicated power,
mechanical efficiency and brake mean effective pressure when all the cylinders are firing.
The bore of the engine is 75mm and the stroke is 90 mm. The engine is running at 3000
rpm.

b What is a compressor? Give the classification of compressors. L2 6
c The following data relate to a performance test of a single-acting 14 cm x 10 cm L3 8
reciprocating compressor:
Suction Pressure = 1 bar, Suction temperature = 20°C, Discharge pressure = 6 bar,
Discharge temperature = 180°C, Speed of compressor = 1200 rpm, Shaft Power = 6.25 kW,
Mass of air delivered = 1.7 kg/min. Calculate the following:
(i) The actual volumetric efficiency, (ii) The indicated power, (iii) The isothermal
efficiency, (iv) The mechanical efficiency, (v) The overall isothermal efficiency.

Q. 03 a Define the following: (i) Refrigerating effect (ii) Ton of refrigeration (iii) Ice-making L2 6
capacity and (iv) Relative COP.
b State the desirable properties of refrigerants for vapour compression refrigeration systems. L2 6
c In an open type of refrigerating installation, 1000 kg of atmospheric air is circulated per L3 8
hour. The air is drawn from the cold chamber at a temperature of 7°C and 1 bar and then
compressed isentropically to 5 bar, it is cooled at this pressure to 27°C and then led to the
expander where it expands isentropically down to atmospheric pressure and is discharged
to the cold chamber. Find out (a) Heat extracted from the cold chamber per hour. (b) Heat
is rejected to cooling water per hour. (c) COP of the system.

b Explain the working principle of a winter air conditioning system with a neat diagram. L2 7
c 200 m3 of air per minute at 15C DBT and 75% RH, is heated until its temperature is 25C. L3 7

and clearly state the assumptions made.
b Define turbomachine. Explain with a neat sketch the construction and working of a L2 5
turbomachine.
c At a 50% reaction turbine axial flow turbine, the mean blade diameter is 60 cm. The L3 7
maximum utilization factor is 0.9 steam flow rate is 10 kg/s. calculate the inlet and outlet
absolute velocities and power developed if the speed is 2000 RPM.

b What is a Gear Pump? Explain the working principle with a neat sketch. L2 6
c An inward flow turbine has an inlet angle of 20°, the water leaves radially, speed of the L3 8
wheel = 350 RPM. The velocity of flow is 4 m/s. The inner and outer diameters of the
turbine are 30 cm and 60 cm respectively. The width of the wheel at the inlet is 12 cm. Find
the blade angle and power developed. Also, what will be the value of R.

Q. 07 a Classify hydraulic turbines with examples. L2 4
b Derive an expression for force, power and efficiency of a Pelton wheel with the help of L3 8
velocity triangles.
c A runner blade is to be designed for a Francis turbine 1.5 m outer diameter and 0.75 m inner L3 8
diameter to operate under ahead of 120 m with a specific speed of 150 and generate 14000
kW. Assume hydraulic efficiency = 0.92. What should be the inlet & outlet blade angles, if
the water has to enter the wheel with an angle of 12° and leave with no whirl velocity.

Q. 08 a Define the following with respect to centrifugal pumps: (i) Static head (ii) Manometric head L2 6
(iii)Total head with the help of a schematic diagram.
b What is cavitation in centrifugal pump? What are the causes of cavitation? L2 6
Explain the steps to be taken to avoid cavitation.
c A Centrifugal Pump with 1.2 m diameter runs at 200 rpm and pumps 1.88 m3/s, the average L3 8
lift being 6 m. The angle which the vanes make at exit with the tangent to the impeller is 26°
and radial velocity of flow is 2.5 m/s. Determine the manometric efficiency and the least
speed to start pumping against a head of 6 m, inner diameter of impeller being 0.6 m.

c A centrifugal compressor running at 6000 RPM having an impeller tip diameter of 101 cm L3 8
has the following test data: (i) mass flow rate = 25 kg/s, (ii) static pressure ratio = 2.12, (iii)
Pressure at inlet = 100 kPa, (iv) Inlet temperature = 28°C, (v) Mechanical Efficiency = 0.97.
Find (i) Slip Coefficient, (ii) Temperature of air at exit, (iii) Power input (iv) Power
Coefficient.

Q. 10 a What are the various methods of compounding of steam turbines? Explain any one of them. L2 6
