Grade 7 Phil-IRI Practice
Test Booklet
Read each selection silently. Then read the questions that follow and write the letter of the best
answer in the answer sheet.

Selection A
Tropical cyclones are warm-core low-pressure systems
associated with a spiral inflow of mass at the bottom level and
a spiral outflow at the top level. They always form over oceans
where sea surface temperature and air temperatures are greater
than 26°C. The air accumulates large amounts of sensible and
latent heat as it spirals toward the center. It receives this heat
from the sea, and the exchange can occur rapidly because of the
large amount of spray thrown into the air by the wind. The energy
of the tropical cyclone is derived from the massive liberation of the latent heat of condensation.
The Philippines is prone to tropical cyclones due to its geographical location which generally
produces heavy rains, flooding in large areas, and strong winds. Consequently, it results in heavy
casualties to human life and the destruction of crops and properties

Selection B
Booms are temporary floating
barriers that are used to contain marine
spills, protect sensitive wetlands, and
assist in recovery. The trajectory map of
the University of the Philippines Marine
Science Institute (UPMSI) serves as a guide to installing the booms. The UPMSI projected that the
oil spill could reach the northern Palawan mainland and threaten over 36,000 hectares of marine
habitats.

Using improvised spill booms is a feasible precautionary measure to prevent damage

to marine environments. These booms are made from indigenous materials that are readily
accessible to the immediate communities.

The DENR-Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) MIMAROPA, together with the PCG
and LGU, has installed provisional spill booms made of cogon and sawali in Casiligan River
and Calimawawa River in Oriental Mindoro province to prevent the oil spill from reaching the
mangrove forests, coral reefs, and other marine life.

The Department of Environment and Natural
Resources (DENR) is considering tapping fisherfolk to
control the growth of water hyacinths or water lilies in
major waterways, particularly in the Pasig River and
Laguna de Bay.

The problem of the proliferation of water

hyacinths was among the issues tackled when
Environment Undersecretary for Solid Waste
Management and Local Government Units (LGUs)
Concerns Benny D. Antiporda met with members
of the Manila Bay Anti-Pollution Task Force (APTF)
last March 11 to discuss the ongoing rehabilitation of
Manila Bay.

The proliferation of invasive water species is known to cause major obstructions to smooth
navigation flow along waterways.

A sub-committee on water hyacinth was then created to control and minimize the growth
of the water plant while the Manila Bay APTF will also look into the possibility of employing the
services of local fisherfolk to harvest water lilies.

Selection D
The observed excessive amount of rainfall in the country for July may have been due to the
following atmospheric systems: southwest monsoon, low-pressure areas (LPAs), intertropical
convergence zone (ITCZ), severe thunderstorms, and the passage of three tropical cyclones.

Tropical Storm Dodong traversed the extreme northern Luzon (13 – 15 July). Super Typhoon
Egay (20 – 27 July) and Typhoon Falcon (26 July – 01 August) both entered the Philippine Area
of Responsibility (PAR) but did not make a landfall. The
subsequent tropical cyclones during the month contributed
to the enhanced southwest monsoon that affected the
provinces in the western sections of Luzon and Visayas,
where floods occurred.

In addition, the ITCZ and localized thunderstorms

induced heavy rainfall that caused severe flooding over
some areas in Visayas and Mindanao. Heavy rainfall from
these hydrometeorological hazards caused severe flooding
and flash floods and likely damaged crops in many farm
areas of the Philippines.

Selection F
Durian fruit is a tropical fruit that has a strong smell, adding
to its appeal, distinguished by its large size and spiky, hard outer
shell. Durian is rich in fiber, vitamin B, vitamin C, and various
healthy plant compounds, such as anthocyanins, carotenoids,
polyphenols, and flavonoids that function as antioxidants.

Traditionally, durian is considered “heaty” because it can

raise body temperature and eventually elevate blood pressure. A
study conducted by Kumolosasi et al in 2016 showed that consumption of durian at an average
amount of 250 grams does not affect systolic and diastolic blood pressure or heart rate.
However, a higher consumption of 500 grams alters the heart rate.

According to nutritionist Dr. Teresita Ungson, eating durian does not lead to high blood
pressure. However, it contains high amounts of sugar, fat, and calories. Also, 100 grams of durian
meat contain 430 micrograms of potassium, equivalent to eating a piece of banana.

152 words

Note: All the selections are excerpts taken from the following official Philippine government websites: Department of Science and
Technology, National Nutrition Council, and Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

34. Which of the following is the traditional perception of durian?

A. Many find the strong smell of durian interesting.

B. It is a fruit rich in fiber, vitamins, and healthy plant compounds.
C. Eating durian can increase body temperature and blood pressure.
D. Durian’s nutritional profile and benefits resemble that of a banana’s.
