ABSTRACT CRITIQUING
Optimal Energy Management of Hybrid Power Plants in Electricity Markets
Abstract
This thesis explores the optimal energy management of Hybrid Power Plants (HPPs) in electricity markets, with
a particular focus on spot and balancing markets. HPPs, which integrate renewable generation technologies
and energy storage systems, are essential for advancing energy systems’ flexibility and reliability. Despite their
potential, significant gaps remain in research addressing their market-oriented optimization and control
strategies. Through an extensive literature review, the study identifies the challenges and opportunities in
energy management systems (EMS) for HPPs. A novel EMS framework is proposed, featuring deterministic,
data-driven, and robust optimization models tailored to the unique demands of spot and balancing markets. This
framework incorporates battery degradation modeling, addressing the nonlinear wear of energy storage
systems. The thesis reveals the impact of forecasting errors in wind power and market prices on HPP
profitability, emphasizing the criticality of addressing these uncertainties. A data-driven optimization model
demonstrates enhanced profit potential by balancing reliability and economy in spot market operations.
Additionally, a robust optimization methodology is developed for balancing market participation, ensuring HPP
compliance with regulatory requirements and mitigating risks associated with uncertainty in regulating volumes.
Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed methodologies, highlighting their applicability in
future renewable-dominant market environments. This research bridges theoretical advancements and practical
market applications, paving the way for the economic and reliable operation of HPPs in dynamic electricity
markets.
Smart energy management system for optimal micro grid economic operation
Abstract
This study, conducted at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China,
introduces a Smart Energy Management System (SEMS) designed to optimize the economic
operation of microgrids. The SEMS integrates power forecasting, energy storage system (ESS)
management, and optimization modules. By utilizing neural networks for renewable energy
forecasting and a matrix real-coded genetic algorithm (MRC-GA) for economic dispatch, the
system minimizes operational costs and maximizes grid flexibility. Three operational policies are
explored, including grid-independent and market-integrated modes, demonstrating the SEMS’s
effectiveness in reducing daily energy costs by up to 27.92%.
ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR LVDC ISLAND NETWORKS
Abstract
This study, conducted at Lappeenranta University of Technology, investigates a novel Energy Management
System (EMS) for Low-Voltage Direct Current (LVDC) island networks. These networks, which operate
independently of the main power grid, rely on renewable energy sources like solar panels and energy
storage systems such as lead-acid batteries. The proposed EMS optimizes power and energy balance,
addresses voltage regulation, and ensures reliable electricity supply even during energy shortages by
prioritizing critical loads and disconnecting non-essential ones.
The EMS employs a master/slave control method supported by a robust communication infrastructure. It
dynamically adjusts network operations through predefined modes that handle both normal and emergency
conditions. A discrete-event simulation-based sizing algorithm is also introduced, determining optimal
photovoltaic array and battery capacities. Additionally, an innovative algorithm estimates guaranteed power
supply durations for customers under varying conditions.
Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed EMS ensures efficient energy management, stabilizes
voltage, and maintains power balance across diverse scenarios. This research offers a scalable and
adaptable approach for implementing renewable-based LVDC networks, particularly in remote or isolated
regions.
