CEE 5470 Design for Seismic Loads
Homework 9 – Steel Special Moment Frames
Due November 29, 2022 by midnight
Given Information:
• Moment frame locations given in the plan below. Use dimensions between gridlines and story
heights from the structural drawings posted on Canvas for Homework 4.
• Lateral forces from ELF for the E-W direction are: F2=74.2 kips, F3=163 kips, F4=259 kips, F5=303
kips, FPHroof=101 kips. This includes consideration of the redundancy factor.
• From a rigid diaphragm analysis, the force in the most heavily loaded moment frame is 0.36Fi
for the typical floor. At the penthouse roof, the lateral force to this moment frame is 0.50Fi.
• The vertical loading for the moment frame beams is D=3.0 k/ft (includes self-weight) and L=1.7
k/ft. Assume this is the same for the beams at every level including the roof.

Tasks for Homework 9:
1. Verify that the beam and column satisfy highly ductile section criteria. Assume the axial force in
the beam is Pu=50 kips, and column is Pu=442 kips.
2. Check that the beam and column satisfy prequalification limits for a WUF-W given in AISC 358.
3. Do Steps 1 through 6 in the Design Procedure in AISC 358 Section 8.7. A few notes for you:
a. Step 3 says to calculate required shear force (demand). As part of this step, it is also
necessary to verify that the beam’s design shear strength (capacity) is sufficiently large
using AISC 360 Chapter G.
b. Step 4 includes the panel zone check. If doubler plates are required, determine the
doubler plate thickness and verify that it satisfy the requirements in AISC 341 E3.6e.
c. Step 4 also includes the strong column weak beam check. Use 442 kips as the column
axial force.
d. Step 6 involves checking for continuity plates. If continuity plates are required, make
sure they satisfy AISC 341 Section E3.6f.
4. Draw a detail of the identified moment connection
a. Identify all demand critical welds
b. Identify the protected zone and show dimensions
c. Give specific weld information including what to do with back up bars
d. Specify the weld access hole geometry and shear plate geometry either by providing all
the relevant dimensions or by including (and citing from your drawing) the typical
details in your submittal.
