Introduction;
Weapon:
These are means or mechanical
devices, which when applied in a
hostile manner will produce lesions or wounds.
Classification of weapons:
1. Hard blunt weapons (light/ moderately heavy I heavy).
2. Sharp cutting weapons (light/ moderately heavy / heavy).
3. Mixed variety (combination of above varieties).
Injury:
Under section 44 IPC injury is defined as
any harm whatever is
illegally caused to a person in body, mind, reputation
or property.

Legally injuries are classified into 2 groups,


1. Simple injury:
Simple hurt are neither serious nor extensive and do not fall under the
category of grievous hurt. These are simple in nature and heal rapidly
without leaving any permanent deformity or disfiguration.
2. Grievous Hurt (Sec. 320 IPC):
As per section 320 IPC the injuries which fall under the
followingg
categories as described below are grievous hurt:
1. Emasculation.
2. Permanent privation of sight of either eye.
3. Permanent privation of hearing of either ear.
4. Privation of any member or joint.
5. Destruction or permanent impairing of the powers of any member
or joint.
6. Permanent disfiguring of head or face.
7. Fracture
dislocation of bone, tooth or joint.

8. Any hurt which endangers life or which causes the victim


be in
to
severe bodily pain or unable to follow his ordinary pursuits for a
period of 20 days.
CANE

IDENTIFICATION: It is a light, blunt, flexible, cylindrical, smooth,


weapon with considerable length.

INJURIES PRODUCED:

1. Abrasion.

2. Contusion.
3. Laceration.

4. Fracture.

MEDICOLEGAL IMPLICATIONS:

1. Can cause both simple & grievous injury.

2. May be used for homicide.

WALKING STICK

IDENTIFICATION: It is a moderately heavy, hard, blunt, non-flexible,


cylindrical, weapon with considerable length, lower end conically
tipped with a handle of various designs.

INJURIES PRODUCED:

1. Abrasion.

2. Contusion.

3. Laceration.

4. Fracture

MEDICOLEGAL IMPLICATIONS:

1. Can cause both simple & grievous injury.

2. May be used for homicide.

BATON/POLICE BATON

IDENTIFICATION: It is a moderately heavy, hard, blunt, non-flexible,


cylindrical, elongated weapon with leather cover and leather loop at
one end.

INJURIEs PRODUCED:

1. Abrasion.

2. Contusion.

3. Laceration.

4. Fracture.

MEDICOLEGAL IMPLICATIONS:

1. Can cause both simple & grievous injury.

2. May be used for homicide.


BAMBOOCLUB (MUGUR)

IDENTIFICATION: It is a moderately heavy, hard, blunt, non-flexible,


cylindrical, weapon with nodes and internodes in between.

INJURIES PRODUCED:
1. Abrasion.

2. Contusion.

3. Laceration.

4. Fracture.

MEDICOLEGAL IMPLICATIONS:
1. Can cause both simple & grievous injury.
2. May be used for homicide.

IRONROD

IDENTIFICATION: It is a moderately heavy, hard, blunt, non-flexible,


cylindrical, weapon with or without calibrations spirally wrapped round
of considerable length.

INJURIES PRODUCED:
1. Abrasion.

2. Contusion.
3. Laceration.

4. Fracture.

MEDICOLEGAL IMPLICATIONS:
1. Can cause both simple & grievous injury.
2. May be used for homicide.

SABAL/ CROWBAR
IDENTIFICATION: It is a moderately heavy, hard, blunt, non-flexible,
cylindrical, weapon with smooth surface; one end circular & flat the
opposite end being flattened in the form of a reverse triangle of
considerable length.

INJURIES PRODUCED:

1. Abrasion.

2. Contusion.

3. Laceration.

4. Lacerated punctured/ penetrating/ perforating wound.

5. Fracture.

MEDICOLEGAL IMPLICATIONS:
1. Can cause both simple & grievous injury.
2. May be used for homicide
3. Accidental injuries.
HAMMERIHATURI
IDENTIFICATION: It is a heavy, hard, blunt weapon with two parts.
A. Metallic part: It has two striking surfaces, one is circular / auricular
flat and the other one is dome shaped / knob like. In between
these two parts there is a hole to accommodate the handle.

B. Wooden handle: Fitted with the metallic part through the loop.

INJURIES PRODUCED:

1. Abrasion.

2. Contusion.

3. Laceration.

4. Fracture.

MEDICOLEGAL IMPLICATIONS:

1. Mostly homicidal

2. Accidental occasionally.
3. Suicidal rare except in lunatics.
SAFTEY RAZOR BLADE

IDENTIFICATION: It is a light sharp cutting weapon with four


edges& two surfaces. Both the long edges are sharp & short
edges being blunt.

INJURIES PRODUCED:

1. Incised wound when sharp edge is drawn.

2. Bevelled cut when struck obliquely

MEDICOLEGAL IMPLICATIONS:

1. Mostly accidental.

2. May be used for suicidal or homicidal purpose.


PEN KNIFE

IDENTIFICATION: It is a light sharp cutting weapon with a pointed


tip. It has got two parts:

1. Metal blade: It has two surfaces; two edges & two ends one
of them being pointed.

2. Handle: Short, made of wood, plastic, metal or animal horn.

INJURIES PRODUCED:
1. Incised wound when sharp edge is drawn.

2. By the pointed tip punctured wound, penetrating wound, and


perforating wound.

3. blunt edge or handle abrasion, bruise.

DAGGER(CHORA

IDENTIFICATION: It is a light to moderately heavy sharp cutting


weapon with a pointed tip. It has got two parts:
1. Metal blade: It has two surfaces; two edges & two ends one
of them being pointed. It has got a brass shoulder (hilt) at
the proximal end at its junction with the handle.

2. Handle: Short, made of wood, plastic, metal or animal horn.

INJURIES PRODUCED:

1. Incised wound when sharp edge is drawn.

IDENTIFICATION: It is a heavy sharp cutting weapon.It has got
two parts
1. Metal part: Rectangular in shape. It has two
surfaces; two
edges, one of them being sharp &the other being thicker &
rounded with a loop to be fitted with handle.
2. Handle: Long, made of wood fitted with the metal part
through the loop.
INJURIES PRODUCED:

1. Incised wound, chop wound, cutfracture of bones, if struck by


sharp edge.
2. By the blunt edge or handle abrasion, bruise, lacerated wound
& fractures.
3. Handle may be used for strangulation.

MEDICOLEGAL IMPLICATIONS:

1. Mostly homicidal.
2. May be accidental or used for suicidal purpose rarely.

SPADE (KODAL)
IDENTIFICATION: It is a heavy sharp cutting weapon .It has got
two parts
1. Metal part: Rectangular in shape. It has two surfaces, four
edges, one of them being sharp & the opposite being thicker
& rounded with a loop to be fitted with
handle.
2. Handle: Long, made of wood/ bamboo fitted with the metal
part through the loop.
INJURIES PRODUCED:
1. Incised wound, chop wound, cut fracture of bones, if struck by
sharp edge.
2. By the blunt edge or handle abrasion, bruise, lacerated wound
