Learning Competencies:
1. “Describes a Mathematical System”
2. “Illustrates the Need for an Axiomatic Structure of a Mathematical
System in General and in Geometry in Particular: (a) defined terms; (b)
undefined (c) postulates and (d) theorems”
Code: M8GE- IIIa-1

Objective/s:
1. Define some terms in the Mathematical System
2. Enumerate the components of Mathematical System
.
Lesson No. 1
Lesson Title: “Mathematical System”
I. Background Information for the Learners:
Mathematical System is a set with one or more binary operations on it. There
are four (4) parts of the system: 1. Undefined terms – terms that have no exact or
formal definitions but are only described using simpler known terms. In geometry, the
terms point, line and plane are undefined. They are just given a general description of
what they are. 2. Definitions, 3. Axiom – an assumption accepted as true even
without proof and Postulate – a statement that describes and a fundamental
relationship between the basic terms in geometry. It is accepted as true even without
proof. 4. Theorem – a statement or conjecture that can be proven true by using
postulates and definitions of basic and undefined terms.
Examples for the Definitions: 1.Collinear it is stated that two or more points
are collinear if and only if there is a line containing all these points. For the
2.Postulates: Example; Given two points, there is one and only one line containing
both of them. (Two points determine a line). And for the 3.Theorems: A line contains
an infinite number of points.

II. General Directions: Read carefully, understand, and answer the
following activities.
III. Activities:
Activity 1: “Scramble – Rumble Letters”
Direction: Form a word out of the scrambled letters in the box.
i n e l m m t t a a e h l a c i
s t m h e e r o p n e a l
s p o e t l a t u s s r e t m
i p t o n a s x m i o
y i n b r a

Activity 2: “Let’s Do It ”
Direction: Choose the correct answer that are written inside the box. Write your
answer on the space provided before each number.
