• Frequency Encoding

• Frequency is the number of cycles per second of the oscillating signal. The
• frequency unit of Hertz (Hz) corresponds to one cycle per second
• Frequency encoding exploits the relationship between magnetic field
strength, frequency and spatial position. By applying a gradient magnetic
field, the Larmor precession frequency of hydrogen protons varies linearly
with positions.
• When we put a person in a magnet some interesting things happen to the
hydrogen protons:
• They align with the magnetic field. This is done in two ways, parallel or
anti-parallel. (B0 is the indication for the magnetic field of the MRI scanner)
