Clock
A clock is an instrument that displays time by dividing it into hours, minutes, and sec-
onds.
A clock is a complete circle having 360ﹾ
1 hour = 60 minutes
1 minute = 60 seconds
1 hour = 3600 seconds
There are three hands in a clock that is hour hand, minute hand and second hand:-
12 hours = 360ﹾ
Hour Hand 1 hours = 30ﹾ
1 minute = 0.5ﹾ
60 minutes = 360ﹾ
Minute Hand
1 minute = 6ﹾ
60 Seconds = 360ﹾ
Second Hand
1 Second = 6ﹾ
Angle Based Clock
In this section, angle between the minute hand and hour hand will be asked at a
particular time.
Rule #1: Angle between Hands
Formula to find the angle between the hands is:
|60H – (11M ÷ 2) = θ|
Where H represents Hour and M represents Minutes and Theta represents angle
between the hands.

Coincide
Coincide represents 0 ﹾangle between hands or the hands are together. There is one
coincide per hour except between 11 to 1 AM/PM. So, there are 11 coincide in 12 hour
and 22 coincide in 24-hour clock.
Time gap between two coincides is:- 65 minute or, hour
Example: If the fi rst coincide is at 12:00 AM
Then the next coincide is at: 01 : 05 AM
Q. At what time between 5 to 6 o'clock will the hands of a clock points coincide
with each other?
A. The angle between the hour hand and minutes hand = 0
H = 5 and angle = 0°
0 = 30 × 5 - 11 M/2
0 = 150 - 11 M/2
150 = 11 M/2
300 = 11 M
M = 27(3/11) Minutes
Hence, the correct answer is 27(3/11) Minutes past to 7.
Angle between hands
Q. What will be the angle between the hour and minute hands of the clock at
7:30?
A. Angle at 7:30 is:
|60H – (11M ÷ 2) = θ|
(60 × 7 – 11 × 30) / 2 = θ
420 – 330 / 2 = θ
θ = 90 / 2 = 45 degree

Reflection of Clock
In this section, question will be asked based on mirror or water image of a clock.
Mirror Image of a Clock
Rule #1: Mirror Image
If it is a 12 hours clock, then subtract the given time from 11:60 hrs.
If it is a 24 hours clock, then subtract the given time from 23:60 hrs.
Q. If it's 5:40 in 12-hour clock then what will be the time in mirror?
A. For every mirror image based on a clock,
If it is 12 hours clock, then subtract given timing from 11:60 hours,
And if it is 24 hours clock, then subtract given timing from 23:60 hrs.
Here, it is 12-hour clock, hence, 11:60 - 5:40 = 6:20.
Thus, mirror image will show 6:20 in the clock.
Water Image of a Clock
Rule #1: Water Image
If minutes are less than 30, then subtract given timing from 18:30 hrs.
If minutes are more than 30, then subtract given timing from 18:90 hrs
Q. If the water image of the clock shows 3 hours 25 minutes, then what will be the
actual time?
A. For every water image based on a clock,
If minutes given are less than 30, then subtract given timing from 18:30 hours.
If minutes given are more than 30, then subtract given timing from 18:90 hrs.
Here, minutes are less than 30, hence,
18:30 - 3:25 = 15:05 i.e. 3 hours 5 minutes
Thus, actual time shows 3 hours 5 minutes in a clock.

Defective Clock
A clock which shows incorrect time is a faulty or defected clock.
If a clock indicates 4 hours 10 minutes when the correct time is 4, then the clock is
gaining. If it indicates 4:40 when the correct time 5, then it is losing.
Q. The clock was set on Thursday, at 4 am. If the clock gains 20 minutes per hour,
what will be the time that the clock shows on Friday, 8: 30 pm?
A. The clock was set on Thursday, at 4 am.
The time from Thursday, 4 am to Friday 8.30 pm = 40 hours, 30 min.
The clock gains 20 minutes per hour.
So the clock gains 810 min in 40 hours, 30 minutes.
So the time that the clock will show on Friday, 8.30 pm = 8. 30 + 810 min = 10 am
Saturday.
Q. A watch gains 5 seconds in 3 minutes and was set right at 8 am. What time will
it show at 10pm on the same day?
A. The watch gains 5 seconds in 3 minutes = 100 seconds in 1 hour
From 8am to 10pm on the same day, time passed is 14 hours.
In 14 hours, the watch would have gained 1400 seconds or 23 minutes 20 seconds.
So, when the correct time is 10pm, the watch would show 10 hours 23 minutes 20
seconds per minute.
Q. How much does a watch loses per day, if the hands coincide every 61
minutes?
A. As we know, 55 minute spaces are covered in 60 minutes.
So for the hands to coincide, it has to cover 60 minute spaces and it is covered in 60
times 60/55=65 minutes.
The watch loses (65 − 61) (65 − 61) in 61 minutes = 49/11 minutes.
So the gain in 24 hours will be 24 × 60 × 49/11 by 61 which is 105.15 minutes.
Hence, the correct answer is 105 minutes.
