The District SAS Nagar is located in the north east part of Punjab. The im portant
townships in the district are Kharar, Kurali, Mohali, Zirakpur, Dera Bassi & Banur.
1.2 Topography
The Topography of the district is even. It is mostly a plain of alluvial type. It also has
loam to heavy loam and sand to sandy loam soils in certain parts of the district. Soil is rich in
nutrients and suitable for crops like wheat, Paddy, Maize, patato and Vegetables etc.
The district is poor as regards mineral wealth. It is mostly a plain of alluvial type. It also has
loam to heavy loam and sand to sandy loam soils in certain parts of the district. The area can
be broadly grouped into two depending upon its geomorphic features as alluvial fan and
alluvial plains. Alluvial fans are deposited by hill torrents with a wavy plain rather than a
steep slope. Adjacent to the alluvial fan are the alluvial plains which forms a part of large
Indo- Gangetic Quaternary basin comprises of thick sand and silty sand layers interbedded
with silt and clay beds. The alluvial plains are of vital economic value as it supports the dense
population of the district. The soils are mainly developed on alluvium under the dominant
influence of climate followed by topography and time. The major soil type of the district is
weakly solonized tropical arid brown soils. A few minor minerals are, however, found.

1.3.1 Kankar—It is massive, hard and com pact nodular calcareous material light grey to
dark grey. Sand, silt and clay are found associated with kankar. It occurs mostly in the f orm
of isolated beds and pockets. It can be used for white washing and road metalling.
1.3.2 Saltpetre —Saltpetre is a g eneral trade name for all the nitrates of sodium , potassiium
and calcium. Nitrates of potassium are known as nitre of saltpetre whereas those of sodium
are called sodanitre, caliche or chile saltp etre. Well saltpetre or no trocalcite is the nitrate of
Ca. It is seen that like any other crop saltpetre also grows. It appears on the surface as an
alkaline efforescence during summer m onth. It is used in m anufacture of gun powder,
preparation of agricultural fertilizers, etc
1.3.3 Alkaline Earth.—Some brick earth and foundary sands are reported from the district.
1.4 Forest
An area of 17000 hectares is covered under reserved, protected, private and
unclassified forests. The main species of plants in district are Eucalyptus, Shisham, Kikar and
Poplar etc.

3.5.3 Growth Trends:
The Major investment in large sector in the district is in the field of Automobiles, Food &
Beverages, Mechanical, paper and Pharmaceutical etc. The district to achieve faster growth
of development and this area is emerging as major I.T. hub of northern India apart district has
potential to attract mega investments in other sectors also.
The Large Scale/PSU Units located in the district procure the services of local Micro & Small
Scale Units. The more investment in large sector shall provide more opportunities for
vendorisation in MSE sector.
