I. Fill in the blanks.

II. Answer the following.
1. Write note on the Dome of the Rock
Ans:1. The Dome of the Rock is part of a larger area known as al-Haram al-Sharif,
(meaning the noble or sacred enclosure) and was built by the Umayyad Caliph Abd
al-Malik and completed in 691 AD.
2. The Dome of the Rock was built at the site of commemoration of the night
journey of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) and his ascension to
the sky (Al-Mihraj). lsra' wa al-Miraj is one of the holy days of the Islamic
calendar. It commemorates the night journey of the Prophet Muhammad
(PBUH). He was taken from the Kabah in Mecca by Angel Jibreel to al-Masjid Al-
Aqsa (the farthest mosque) in Jerusalem. From the rock Muhammad (S.A.W)
ascended to heaven where he met prophets who preceded him.
Q2 Write a note on Cordoba Mosque
Ans: When Muslims reached AI-Andalus in Spain, they built the famous Cordoba
Mosque, begun in 784 CE. Both the Dome of the Rock and the Mosque of
Cordoba are famous for the use of alternating black and white voissoirs in the
arches at the Dome of the Rock and red and white voissoirs at the Mosque of
Cordoba.

Ans 1. Ahmad Ibn Majid was an Arabian navigator born in 1421 Julfar present-day
Ras Al Khaimah. He was raised in a family famous for seafaring, at the age of 17 he
was able to navigate ship.
2. He was so famous that he was known as the first Arab seaman and he was
known as the Lion of Sea.
3. Ahmad Ibn Majid wrote several books on marine science and the movements of
ships, which helped people of the Persian Gulf to reach the coasts of India East
Africa and other destinations.
4. Among his many books on oceanography, the Kitab al-Fawa’id fi Usul ‘Ilm al-
Bahr wa ’l-Qawa’id (The Book of the Benefits of the Principles and Foundations of
Seamanship) is considered as one of his best.
5. He became famous in the West as the navigator who helped Vasco da Gama find
his way from Africa to India.

Ans: navigators are of three types.
1. The first is the navigator who comes and goes, sometimes safely and sometimes
not, making good and erroneous decisions. This is the lowest form of navigator.
2. The second type is the navigator, well-known by people for his excellent knowledge,
cleverness and skill in every place to which travels; he collects experience of it but is
not known after his death.

excellent knowledge and his great attainments from whom none of the problems of
the sea are hidden and who writes books which can be of use during his life and which
people can use after his death.
