Introduction & Tips
Welcome to our series of levelled reading workbooks. Each workbook contains a
number of texts. Each text is followed by exercises designed to reinforce literacy skills
including reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling and writing. The books include
both fiction and non-fiction passages and explore a wide range of topics in social
studies, nature, history, science and more.
Our readers are “leveled” from A to Z based on a number of factors related to text
complexity such as vocabulary, average word size and sentence length, amount of
repetitiveness of words and sentence structures and subject matter complexity.
Early reading levels use short simple words and sentences in big fonts in a highly
repetitive manner. Stories relate to subjects young children are familiar with. Each
successive level introduces greater reading challenge.

Some tips on using our leveled readers
Review the vocabulary words on the first page of each story with your student.
Ask your child to read these words and talk about what they mean.
Ask younger students to read the stories out loud and use their finger to point to
words as they read from left to right. Help them as needed.
Ask younger students to also read the directions of the exercises out loud.
Remind them to use complete sentences when answering.
Ask older students to look up words they don’t know in a dictionary.
Point out punctuation; for example, when there is an exclamation mark ask
them to reread the sentence using more enthusiasm.
Review your student’s work and guide him or her through any answers that are
not correct.
Discuss the stories, the characters, the topics, the settings, the pictures –
anything about the text to make it more interesting, relevant or fun.
Monitor your student’s progress and adjust reading levels as needed.
Keep the reading fun!

Grandma and the Great White
When Alex saw the ocean, he got a sick feeling in his
stomach. I t was the first week of summer vacation and the
first time he was visiting his grandma at her new apartment.
The ocean made Alex think of the big pits of quicksand he
had seen in cartoons, w here the sand swallowed
unsuspecting characters whole.
He had read about the sharks that lived in the ocean and
their sharp teeth. When Alex looked at the people on the
beach, s tanding in the surf or jumping over the waves, he
thought they were crazy. Did n’t
they know about the sharks?
Alex’s grandma stood next to him
as he gazed out at the
unforgiving sea. She was an
energetic woman who wore frosted pink lipstick and a red
polka dot swimsuit. Her short gray hair was held up by a
generous application of hairspray.

“Let’s go dip our toes in the water,” Alex’s grandma
suggested. However, when she grabbed
Alex’s hand, he stood stock-still as if all his
limbs were frozen in place.
“I don’t want to go in the ocean,” Alex
said softly. “I saw a documentary about
it. There are tiger sharks, hammerhead
sharks, whale sharks and great white sharks, which are the
most dangerous of all. I don’t want to get eaten alive. Let’s
just go to your apartment and play video games, OK?”
“Alex, don’t be ridiculous!” Alex’s grandma cried. Then she
settled down. “There are some sharks in the o cean, but they
are in deep water, far away from the shore, and it’s rare for
sharks to attack anyone.”
Alex’s grandma, in her red polka -dot bathing suit, put her
two feet in the bubbling surf. Alex felt that sick feeling in his
stomach again. Grandma kept on walking until the blue
water was up to her knees. Then, she turned around to face
Alex.
“Now,” she yelled over the sound of the waves, “if the
sharks were hungry, they would want to devour a little old
lady like me, right?”
[Link] © K5 Learning 2020 5
Level N Reader
Alex’s eyes were as wide as saucers. He did not want
Grandma to get gobbled up by a great white shark. He
wanted to drag her back to safety, but that would mean
getting in the water.
His grandma started yelling to the ocean, “Sharks! Sharks!”
she yelled, “Come and get me!”
No sharks came. A few people were watching Grandma
and chuckling. Alex shook his head and tried to call his
Grandma back to shore, but she ignored him.
“Mr. Great White Shark, come and get me!
I’m tasty!” continued Grandma.
Now all the people on the beach were laughing.
Alex’s grandma was waving her arms and
jumping up and down; he had never seen
her so excited. Alex started to giggle, then
started laughing so hard he bent over. His
grandmother kept on calling to the sharks, until
she was almost out of breath.
“See!” she went on, “I called for them, and I’m still here.
Now won’t you come jump over some waves with me?”
Alex sprinted to the water and plunged into the ocean.

House-Hunting in Outer Space
Hi! I am Stella, your intergalactic real estate agent. I help
people find their perfect home , from here to Jupiter, or
anywhere else in the solar system. Have you ever wondered
what it would be like to live on another planet? Or , perhaps
you would like to live somewhere closer , like the Moon? You
are going to love the homes I have available in outer
space.
In outer space, you will find
peace and quiet, amazing
views, and no traffic. Ever
since 1969, when the first
astronaut stepped on the
Moon, people have been
interested in living in outer
space. Let me tell you,
living in outer space is out
of this world .

Now, let us see what we can find for you. You are going to
need to live somewhere habitable, where life can exist.
Let’s start with a look at Saturn. It is an
enormous planet with beautiful rings
around it. Let me check my
notes. No, that w ill not work.
Saturn is entirely made up of
gas. You are going to need a
hard surface to live on, or you will
sink right through the planet.
Here is another planet that might work - Mars. No, never
mind. Mars has a hard surface, but it does not have any
water. Scientists believe M ars once had water, but now all
the water on Mars has frozen solid. Humans, animals and
plants need water to live. On Mars, you would not be able
to grow any plants for food. Also, on Mars there is not
enough gravity to keep you from floating away. Mars ju st
will not do at all.
Let’s see if I can find somewhere with nice beaches and
sunshine. Mercury is closest to the sun, so it should be nice
and warm. Wait, it looks like Mercury is a little too close to
the Sun. I t gets so hot there that if you left a gla ss of water
outside, the water would start to boil! That is a little too hot
for going to the beach and much too hot for life to exist.

Let’s look for something a little closer to Earth. How about
the Moon? Who has not looked up at the Moon and
wondered what it would be like to live there? It is quite
beautiful, and you would have a nice view of Earth. I will
find a nice spot for you on the Moon.
Oh dear, it looks like the Moon is not going to work either.
The Moon does not have air to breathe, and everyo ne
needs air to breathe to survive. No, the Moon is not going to
work either.
Let me just type in what you need in
order to live, and we will see what
the computer says. You need a
hard surface, water, gravity,
moderate temperatures (not
too hot, not too cold), and air
to breathe. The computer is
generating a place right now.
There! I have got it! It looks like the
perfect place for you to live is Earth.
Well, I am so glad I could help you with that. Please,
contact me anytime for your future real estate needs. Did I
mention that I also sell used rockets?

A Howling Good Time
In the backseat of the car, Katie leaned closer to Grandma
and whispered, “I’m a little scared.”
Grandma reached over and patted her on the knee.
“You’re going to enjoy it, honey. Visiting a wolf preserve is a
bit like visiting the zoo , except it is in the woods.”
Tall trees raced by them as the road took them
deeper into the forest. Remembering
stories like “Little Red Riding Hood” and “The
Three Little Pigs,” Katie shivered. She could
not stop thinking of the Big Bad Wolf.
“We’re here,” Dad announced, a s he parked
under a sign that read ‘Wolf Preserve ’.
Gravel and snow crunched under Dad’s feet as he walked
into the little shop that looked like a log cabin. When he
came out, a lady wearing a heavy green jacket and a
yellow wool hat was with him.

Level N Reader
“This is our guide, Sara,” Dad told the family. Sara smiled
and shook everybody’s mittened hands, even Katie’s.
Sarah explained that the wolf preserve had been created
to take care of wolves who were injured or
separated from their families. The preserve takes
care of the wolves until they are well enough to
be released back into the wild. While at the
preserve, the wolves live in big open spaces,
much like their natural forest habitat.
“Let’s go meet some wolves!” Sara declared,
leading them down the trail.
Partway down the trail, a loud howl rose out of the nearby
woods. “Howoooooooo!”
“Whoa!” Dad said, stopping in his tracks so quickly that
Mom and Grandma bumped right into him. Another howl
went up, then another, until the spooky sound echoed
around the whole forest.
All four of them huddled together, eyes big and round,
looking at Sara.
“They can’t help that they have such loud voices, ” she said,
laughing. “It shocks everyone the first time they hear them.”
[Link] © K5 Learning 2020 16
Level N Reader
“They sound mean,” Katie said, worried.
“They are just saying hello to each other,” Sara shouted
over the noise. “They can’t call or text their friends like we
can.”
Katie giggled at the idea of wolves on cell phones.
When they arrived at a field, Sara took out her binoculars
and looked off in the distance. “There they are!” she
announced, passing the binoculars around so everyone
could see. “Those are three brothers. You can see them
running and playing. That big one, who we
call Hero, was tied up in an
old shack and had many
injuries when we found him.
Now, he is happy and safe.”
“Why was he tied up?” asked Katie’s mom
“Some people try to keep wolves as pets, but that is a very
bad idea,” replied Sara. “Wolves are like dogs in some
ways, but they are wild animals. They will not form
relationships with humans in the way that dogs do. They
belong in the forest, not at someone’s house.”
[Link] © K5 Learning 2020 17
Level N Reader
Tramping on down the path, they found two fluffy white
wolves standing near a fence.
Sara said that these two wolves had been sick , but they
were better now and would be released back into the wild
soon. The bigger wolf that was licking the other one’s head
was the mom. “She takes care of her daughter just like your
mom takes care of you,” Sara said to Katie.
“My mom doesn’t lick my head ,” Katie said, giggl ing.
Sara led them farther along the trail, where they met many
different wolves. Each wolf had its own special story.
Back in the car, they heard a wolf howl as they rode away.
“Good-bye to you, too!” Katie yelled out the window.
“Thanks for the visit!”

yeast directions ingredients
recipe croutons measuring
A Loaf of Croutons
Mimi and her little sister Claire are each baking a loaf of
bread to go with their family’s dinner.
“I’m following Grandma’s old bread recipe,” Claire
announces. She has lined up all sorts of measuring cups and
measuring spoons in front of her. Behind them are bags of
flour, sugar, salt and yeast. In the middle of her workspace,
Claire has a wrinkled piece of paper which has her
grandmother’s recipe written on it.
Clair follows the directions. “I t says t o put a
pinch of yeast into four cups of warm
water, and then add five cups
of flour,” Claire reads out loud,
while measuring the precise
amount of flour she needs and
dumping it into her bowl.
“Well, I’m going to make my own special bread. I have the
recipe right up here,” Mimi says, pointing to her head.
[Link] © K5 Learning 2020 22
Level N Reader
Mimi starts dumping ingredients into her bowl without
measuring them. A handful of flour goes in, followed by a
large spoonful of sugar, a small spoonful of salt , a tiny bit of
yeast and a coffee mug of water. Mimi starts kneading
these ingredients together, but they are not
sticking together very well.
“I don’t think bread works like that,” Claire
says. Claire adds exactly one teaspoon of
sugar and one -half a teaspoon of salt to her
bowl, and then she starts working the
mixture into a round ball of sticky dough.
“Well, this is how my bread works,” Mimi says,
still struggling with the mess in her bowl. “It’s supposed to
be dry and gloppy like this, and then it all comes together
perfectly in the end.”
“Whatever you say, Mimi.”
Claire shapes her dough into a perfect ball , then coats it
with olive oil, just like the recipe says. She places a kitchen
towel over her bowl and sets it by the window.
“It’s not going to bake by the window, Claire. The sun isn’t
hot enough,” Mimi points out to her sister in her best grown -
up voice.
[Link] © K5 Learning 2020 23
Level N Reader
“I’m not baking it yet. The recipe says you have to wait half
an hour,” Claire answers. “Grandma says the yeast needs
time to make the dough rise. It’s supposed to double in size
before you bake it.”
“My dough’s perfect just like it is,” Mimi declares. The
ingredients in her bowl are barely clinging together, but
Mimi plops them onto a baking tray , and into the oven they
go. She turns around and smiles at Claire, quite satisfied
with her efforts.
“We’ll see, Mimi. None of that looked right to me,” Claire
says.
An hour later, the sisters compare their
loaves of bread. Claire’s dough has
risen beautifully in the oven and
has gained a fine and golden
crust. Mimi’s dough, on the
other hand, has turned into
something dense and hard. Her
bread looks like a short, sand -
colored brick.
[Link] © K5 Learning 2020 24
Level N Reader
“You should have just followed the recipe and waited for
the yeast to rise,” Claire says. She shrugs her shoulders and
rests her perfect loaf on the kitchen table.
Mimi tries to cut her bread, but it is too hard. It breaks into
small pieces.
“Be careful, you might break the knife,” Claire says,
laughing.
“I think next time I’ll follow a recipe ,” Mimi says, sighing.
Just then, the girls’ mother walks in and winks at Claire.
“Did someone make croutons? ” their mother asks. “ We
need them for the salad .”
Mimi lifts up the baking tray with her dense and hefty bread.
“Fresh croutons, right here!” she answers.
“Oh, it was you, Mimi,” her mother
exclaims, looking surprised. “I
never knew you could bake!
These croutons are perfect!”

Daniel has been waiting all week for their
new computer to arrive. He ha s been
checking the mailbox every morning
and every afternoon, but all he ha s
found so far were the envelopes his
dad calls ‘junk mail and bills’.
Daniel pressed his forehead against their front
window. “Staring at the mailbox won’t make your
computer arrive any earlier,” Daniel’s mother told him.
“I hope it arrives soon,” Daniel responded, fogging up the
glass with his breath. “I want to play Green Ghosts Gone
Wild.”
Daniel’s mom sighed; this had been going on all week. “I
wasn’t going to tell you, but your package is scheduled to
arrive today,” she said. “Until it arrives, why don’t you read
an interesting book like your sister is doing, instead of sitting
there getting our window all dirty with your handprints?”

Daniel took his hands off the window but kept his eyes
locked on the road outside. “I’m going to ride my bike
down to the corner so I can see the delivery truck when it
comes.”
“Daniel, is waiting on the corner going to make the delivery
truck arrive sooner?” Mom asked her son.
“No. I mean maybe. I don’t know .”
She tried again, “Do you know the
meaning of the word ‘patience’?”
“Yes, Mom. I know what patience
is.”
Mom was not so sure her son understood what patience
was. “Spell patience for me.”
“Mom, I’ll be patient on the corner.” Daniel grabbed his
binoculars, jumped on his bike and rode to the corner to
keep watch for the familiar brown delivery truck.
Daniel scanned the busy intersection with his binoculars.
After only a few minutes , he spotted the delivery van.
Maybe waiting on the corner did make the truck arrive
faster!

Daniel pedaled back to his own driveway and
waited, but the truck continued right past him
without stopping. “Co me back! You forgot our

Daniel jumped back on his bike and
pedaled furiously. He chased after the large brown truck on
a long, winding path through his neighborhood. Daniel
pedaled as fast as he could, but he could not catch up.
Finally, his pursuit ended as the vehicle disappeared in the
distance.
Daniel tried to catch his breath as he felt his heart
hammering against his chest. He could not believe his bad
fortune. Why had the truck driver forgotten to stop at his
house?
Unfortunately for Daniel, things were about to get worse.
He looked at his bike and discovered that he had a flat tire!
It would take an hour to walk the wounded bike back to his
house.
By the time he got home, Daniel was sweaty, exhausted,
frustrated , and still upset at the truck driver. He walked into
the kitchen where his mom was coolly sipping a lemonade

and calmly reading the newspaper. She was used to
Daniel’s escapades.
“Mom, could you call the computer store and tell them the

About five minutes after you left, a white truck
came to our back door and delivered the

“A white truck?”

tangerine doors, to be exact. The driver was
very polite and asked for you, but since you
weren’t available, your sister accepted the

Daniel slumped in the chair and looked at his mom. He

python muscled peaceful
scales pursuit argument
Pet Standoff
Joan and Jimmy could barely contain their excitement as
they walked into the pet store. They wandered around,
passing fish tanks, scaly lizards, soft bunnies, swimming
turtles, smelly ferrets, and fuzzy kittens. They were each
going to choose a new pet.
Their dad, waiting patiently
outside, spotted Jimmy first as
he came out holding a fluffy
white dog. “I’m naming him
Snowball,” said Jimmy.
Joan came out next, holding a huge glass container with a
giant, coiled snake inside. “It’s a python,” she exclaimed
happily, “and I’m naming her Slinky!”
Her dad sighed. He had tried to convince Joan to get a
kitten instead, but she had fallen in love with snakes after
reading a book on reptiles.

In the car, Jimmy said, “Snowball is so cool. He’s the coolest
pet ever.”
Joan replied, “Slinky is way cooler. Snowball is just another
dog, and everyone has a dog.”
“Dogs are way cooler than snakes. Snakes are stupid.”
“No, they ’re not.”
“Kids, please stop fighting, and j ust be happy
with your own pets,” interrupted their dad.
At home, Jimmy spent hours throwing a ball
for the puppy. They played and explored the
house together as Snowball followed Jimmy every where.
Joan took Slinky into her room where the snake curled up on
her desk. Fascinated by her green scales and muscled
body, Joan watched the snake sleep peacefully in between
stacks of Joan’s books.
Suddenly, Jimmy’s red ball came bouncing through the
open door and into Joan’s room, with Snowball in hot
pursuit. Slinky snapped to attention and hissed at the small
dog. The puppy froze and growled back at the snake. They
did not seem to like each other very much.

“Get that ugly dog away from my snake!” screamed Joan.
“Mom!”
“He’s not ugly!” shouted Jimmy, as he picked up the dog.
Mom walked in and sighed. She had hoped the kids would
stop fighting so much after they had pets of their own to
take care of, but so far it was making things worse.
That night at dinner, all the kids could talk about was their
new pets. Unfortunately, it led to another heated argument.
“You’re lucky I picked Snowball up, or he
would have eaten your snake,” said
Jimmy.
“That little puppy couldn’t eat a mouse,”
replied Joan. “Snakes can swallow dogs whole!”
Mom and Dad looked at each other an d sighed. They both
wanted a more peaceful household.
After dinner, Jimmy could not find Snowball. He was looking
for the puppy all over the house when his sister saw him and
asked, “Have you seen Slinky? She got out of her cage. I
have been looking all over, but I can’t find her. I’m
worried.”

Jimmy was worried about Snowball , too, but he also felt
sorry for his sister. “Let’s find them together. You check all
the closets, and I’ll start looking outside. Don’t worry, we’ll

Jimmy was in their backyard calling for Snowball when he
heard his sister cry out, “Jimmy, come quick.” He raced
inside the house, bolted up the stairs two steps at a time,
and ran to the closet in the hallway where Joan was
standing.
Inside the closet, Slinky was curled up a round Jimmy’s red
ball. Snowball was resting his head on the snake’s tail, while
Slinky’s head was on the puppy ’s soft belly. Both pets were
fast asleep.
“I’m sorry for what I said before,” Joan whispered softly.
“Snowball is actually a really
nice dog.”
“I’m sorry, too,” said Jimmy.
“Snakes are cool. Maybe we
should share the pets. I’d like
to have a dog and a snake.”
“It’s a deal!” agreed Joan,
high-fiving her brother.

mean knitting embarrassed
wool coaxed daughter
Mia’s Surprise
Mia was going to have her eighth birthday in a few months.
Her mom thought Mia was the best daughter in the world.
Not only did Mia try hard in school, she was also very kind to
her classmates and teachers. Mia’s mom wanted to make
something special as a gift for Mia on her birthday.
Mia’s mom went to the knitting store and
bought several different kinds of wool.
Over the next three months, every
night after Mia went to sleep, her
mom would stay up knitting a special
hat for Mia.
The big day arrived, and Mia loved her
gift. The hat was dark green with black
trim and a n ‘M’ on the front. It fit her
perfectly, it was warm, it looked cool , and there was not
another one like it in the whole world. She was looking
forward to wearing it to school and showing i t to her friends.

The next day, as she went to sit down for lunch, Mia’s f riend
Katie stared at the hat. “Where did you get that?” she
asked.
“My mom made it for me,” replied Mia proudly. “It took her
months to knit. The ‘M’ is for Mia .”
Katie twirled her hair and adjusted the black
Adidas hat she was wearing. I t seemed like
everyone was wearing Adidas hats these
days. Katie looked Mia in the eyes and said,
“Your hat is so weird, Mia.”
Another girl teased, “Hey Mia, if you lose your
hat will you forget your name?” Everyone
laughed.
Mia was so embarrassed. Everyone at her
table was looking at her, and she wanted to cry. Mia forgot
that her mom had worked so hard on her hat. At that
moment, all Mia wanted to do was take it off.
For the next few days, Mia wore her old Adidas hat to
school. Mia’s mom asked her daughter why she was not
wearing her new hat, but Mia was embarrassed and did not
want to tell her mom. Finally, her mom coaxed it out of her.

“A girl at school said something mean about the hat,” Mia
said, frowning.
“Oh, Mia,” replied her mother, “when someone says
something mean for no reason, it is usually because they
have their own problems. Any way, it doesn’t matter if
anyone at school likes your hat. All that matters is that you
like your hat.”
The next morning, Mia started to put on her Adidas hat
again, and then she stopped. She was tired of
dressing like everyone else. She put on the hat
her mom had made and looked at herself in
the mirror. She thought she looked cool. Her
mother was right! All that mattered was that
Mia liked her hat, and Mia liked her hat very
much. She set off for school that morning
feeling happy and confident.
At recess, Katie came up to Mia and began to speak. Mia
prepared herself for more teasing, but instead, Katie
apologized.
“Mia, I’m sorry for what I said about your hat the other day.
I was just jealous that no one has ever made me a cool hat.
I’m sorry that I hurt your feelings,” Katie said shyly.

Mia was delighted by the apology, but she felt a little sorry
that nobody had ever made a hat for Katie. When Mia
arrived home that night, she had a special request for her
mom.
“Of course. What do you need?” Mia’s mom asked.
Mia smiled. “Could you please make me one more hat?
This time, can you put a ‘K’ on it?”

business lemonade advertising
finance drive-thru production
Lemonade Industries Inc.
Today was the big day! My neighbor, Alex, and I were
opening a lemonade stand. We were going
to sell lemonade to the whole
neighborhood, and we were going
to make a fortune!
Alex is the Head of Production. He is in charge of mixing the
lemonade and pouring it into cups.
I am the Chief of Finance. I am in charge of collecting
money from customers and giving them their change.
My little sister Marcy is in charge of advertising. She will
stand on the corner with a lemonade sign.
We pulled out a table from my garage, and Alex brought
some plastic cups over from his house. We mixed together
lemons, sugar, water, and ice until we had a huge pitcher
of lemonade. We made a sign for Marcy to hold, and Alex
and I brought every thing outside and set up our stand.

We were in business!
Just after we opened, I felt a drop of water hit my nose.
Then I felt another, and another. I t was raining. Alex and I
both groaned as we watched raindrops plop into the
lemonade. Rain was not part of our master plan.
Just as we began to pack up our
lemonade stand, my mom’s car
turned around the corner
and pulled up in front of
us.
“What are you kids doing?” she said, chuckling. “A
lemonade stand in the rain? I wish it w as a drive-through
stand. I would love a cup of lemonade , especially if I didn’t
have to leave my car to get it.”
Alex’s eyes suddenly lit up. He sprinted back to his house
and came back dragging a big canopy tent. “We’re going
to make a drive-through lemonade stand!” he exclaimed.
Mom and I put up the canopy tent while Alex wrote “Ice -
Cold Lemonade Drive-Through” on Marcy’s sign. Now,
every thing was dry under the tent. We were back in
business!

“I’ll be right back,” my mom said suddenly. She got back in
her car, drove around the block, and pulled up in front of
our stand again.
“One lemonade, please,” she said, grinning. Our first
customer!
Alex served my mom the lemonade, and I took her money.
She tipped us twenty -five cents! We were off to a good
start.
A few minutes later, another car drove up and asked for
two cups of lemonade. Then another car stopped by. After
a while, I heard a car honking and looked down the street.
There was a lineup of cars! The honking was
coming from a car at the back of the line.
Mr. Henderson was always in a hurry.
“I’ve never seen a drive -through lemonade
stand before,” one customer told us as she
handed us a shiny quarter. “A nice cup of
lemonade is just what I needed to brighten
up this gloomy day!”
We kept our stand open for the next two
hours until we completely ran out of lemonade. We sold
over 100 cups, and some people even came back for more!

After we had packed up our lemonade stand and cleaned
every thing, my mom drove us to the ice cream parlor. We
treated her to an ice cream for helping us set up our
business and giving us the idea for the drive -through.
“You guys are quite the businessmen,” she s aid between
licks of her chocolate ice cream. “What is your next
venture?”
Alex and I looked at each other. I lowered my voice and
spoke to my mom, “We have an idea, but for now it’s a
secret. I can’t tell you yet.”

Not Dreaming About Salad Bowls
The world has almost 200 different countries. Countries can
have different languages, different laws and different
cultures.
Most people live their
whole lives in the same
country. They may make short
trips to other countries, but their
home remains where they
were born.
However, some people move to another
country. In their new country, these people are called
immigrants.
People immigrate for many different reasons. Some people
move to places where they will feel safer or have more
freedom. Many people move to countries where they
believe they will have more opportunities to work. Others
move to give their children a better education.
[Link] © K5 Learning 2020 58
Level N Reader
It is a very big decision to immigrate to a new country.
People often leave their friends and m any family members
behind. Their new country will have different laws and
customs. The new country will often have a different
language. This can make it difficult for an im migrant to fit
in. It takes a lot of courage to immigrate to a new country.
The United States is home to immigrants from all over the
world. I t has so many people from different places that
people call the U.S. a ‘melting pot’. They think of the
country as a large pot where all the different people are
blended together.
However, immigrants do not completely forget about their
old country. They will often still love certain types of food or
music from home. So, other people call the U.S. a ‘salad
bowl’. They think of the country as a mix of many cultures,
each living together
happily. Just like the
different vegetables
in a salad bowl!
Immigrants are probably not thinking about melting pots or
salad bowls when they arrive in America. They are just trying
to find a better life for themselves and their families.

arguing competitors sportsmanship
deked mockingly opponents
The Competitors
Ethan and Kaden were best friends. Every
day at recess, they played soccer with
other boys in their class.
It was a beautiful, sunny day. Ethan and
Kaden raced up and down the soccer
field. They were fierce competitors, and both their teams
were try ing their hardest to score the most goals before
recess ended. With only a few minutes left before the bell
would ring, it was 2-0 for Ethan’s team.
Ethan carried the ball up the field. He deked left, then right,
dribbling expertly around his opponen ts. Kaden chased
after him, try ing to steal the ball away but could not catch
him. Ethan kicked the ball as hard as he could, aiming for
the top corner of the net.
“Goal!” Ethan yelled excitedly. “Woo hoo! We’re winning,
three to zip!” He started dancing a round the field, high -
fiving his teammates.

“That’s not fair!” Kaden shouted. “You have all
the best players!”
Both teams crowded around Ethan and
Kaden, who began arguing over the
teams.
“Your team even has more players than us,
and we’re still winning,” Ethan said mockingly.
“Your goal shouldn’t even count,” Kaden said
angrily. “The whole game is unfair.”
The bell rang, and students started heading towards the
school.
“I’m not playing next recess,” Kaden s aid to Ethan with a
scowl.
Mrs. Stevens overheard Kaden’s comment.
“What’s going on, boys?” she inquired. She was surprised to
hear such good friends arguing.
Kaden and Ethan started talking at the same time. Mrs.
Stevens could not hear what either of them was saying , but
she could tell they were very upset.

She interjected. “One at a time, boys. Kaden, you start.
Ethan, your job is to listen. Then , we’ll switch, and Ethan can
talk, while Kaden and I listen.”
The boys took turns explaining why the soccer game had
made them so angry. Mrs. Stevens learned that the boys
had started yelling at each other on the field. She
understood that Kaden felt the teams were unfair. She also
understood that the teams were the same as they had been
yesterday.
“Let me get this straight,” Mrs. Stevens began . “Yesterday,
Kaden’s team won, and today Ethan’s team won. Does that
mean the teams weren’t fair?” She raised an eyebrow.
Kaden blushed and looked down at the
ground. “Well, maybe the teams are fine.”
“What is the real problem, then?” Mrs. Stevens
asked.
Kaden explained that he did not appreciate
how Ethan cheered so loudly and announced
that his team was winning, “three to zip!” Kaden realized
though that he should not have g otten so angry about it.

“I shouldn’t have rubbed it in that we were winning,” Ethan
admitted.
Mrs. Stevens thanked the boys for their honesty. She
explained that good sportsmanship means showing respect
to your teammates and your opponents. She and the bo ys
discussed both winning and losing gracefully.
“It’s natural to be happy when you score a goal, but it is
important to be respectful to your opponents,” she
explained.
Mrs. Stevens also discussed how players
may feel angry or frustrated when they are
losing, but sometimes you must accept that
the other team played better. Real competitors
congratulate the winners and do not make
excuses when they lose.
“I’m sorry for my huge celebration after I
scored,” Ethan apologized. “I wasn’t thinking
about how it would make your team feel.”
“That’s okay,” Kaden replied. “I’m sorry for getting so mad
and saying the teams weren’t fair. The teams were fair. We
just didn’t play as well as your team today.”
