Domestic violence is violence or other abuse that occurs in a domestic
setting, such as in a marriage or cohabitation. Domestic violence is often
used as a synonym for intimate partner violence, which is committed by one
of the people in an intimate relationship against the other person, and can
take place in relationships or between former spouses or partners. In its
broadest sense, domestic violence also involves violence against children,
parents, or the elderly. It can assume multiple forms, including physical,
verbal, emotional, economic , religious, reproductive, or sexual abuse. It can
range from subtle, coercive forms to marital rape and other violent physical
abuse, such as choking, beating, female genital mutilation, and acid
throwing that may result in disfigurement or death, and includes the use of
technology to harass, control, monitor, stalk or hack. Domestic murder
includes stoning, bride burning, honor killing, and dowry death, which
sometimes involves non-cohabitating family members.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Why is it important to stop violence?
Violence has enormous health and social consequences. Violence results in many
deaths every day, particularly among young men and boys. Beyond these deaths,
many more men, women, boys and girls suffer from injuries, disability and ill-
health as the result of violence. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY Worldwide, the
victims of domestic violence are overwhelmingly women, and women tend to
experience more severe forms of violence. violence is among the most
underreported crimes worldwide for both men and women. In addition, due to
social stigmas regarding male victimization, men who are victims of domestic
violence face an increased likelihood of being overlooked by healthcare providers.
Domestic violence often occurs when the abuser believes that they are entitled to
it, or that it is acceptable, justified, or unlikely to be reported. It may produce an
intergenerational cycle of violence in children and other family members, who may
feel that such violence is acceptable or condoned. Many people do not recognize
themselves as abusers or victims, because they may consider their experiences as
family conflicts that had gotten out of control. Awareness, perception, definition
and documentation of domestic violence differs widely from country to country.
HISTORY: THE FEMINIST MOVEMENT
The act didn't come to reality easily. It took several years for the renewal of the
Indian system when it came to women empowerment. The feminist movement in
1970s and campaign led by them brought up the Criminal Law (Amendment) 1983
and section 498A was added in the IPC. This law made "cruelty" to a wife by a
husband or his relatives a cognisable, non-bailable offence punishable by up to
three years in jail and a fine. Cruelty here included mentally and physically aspects
as well. In 1986, another provision was added, namely section 304B, which
criminalized dowry death. These both laws were a win in itself but soon it was
seen that these shifted focus from violence faced by woman on a daily basis for
reasons different from dowry. On the other hand, only married woman could seek
relief from this therefore a large part of society such as unmarried woman, old
woman, widows and children had no provisions to safeguard themselves against
these problems. It was difficult to integrate concerns like sexual violence,
economic violence, or even threats of violence inside the definition's reach because
it was framed in such a way.
TYPES OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
PHYSICAL ABUSE
Physical abuse is when someone hurts or harms a child or young person on
purpose includes: hitting with hands or objects. slapping and punching, kicking.
SEXUAL ABUSE
Sexual abuse is sexual behavior or a sexual act forced upon a woman, man or child
without their consent. Sexual abuse includes abuse of a woman, man or child by a
man, woman or child. Sexual abuse is an act of violence which the attacker uses
against someone they perceive as weaker than them.
FINANCIAL ABUSE
Financial abuse restricts or removes another person's access to financial resources
and their participation in financial decisions, forcing their financial dependence, or
alternatively exploits their money and economic resources for the abuser's gain.
CULTURAL ABUSE
Cultural abuse happens when abusers use aspects of a victim's particular cultural
identity to inflict suffering, or as a means of control.
EMOTIONAL ABUSE
Emotional abuse includes non-physical behaviors that are meant to control,
isolate, or frighten you. This may present in romantic relationships as threats,
insults, constant monitoring, excessive jealousy, manipulation, humiliation,
intimidation, dismissiveness, among others.
SOCIAL ABUSE
Social abuse is behaviour that aims to cut you off from your family, friends, or
community. It can also involve a person or people trying to damage your
relationships with others. People who are socially abusive may also attempt to
make you look bad or ruin your reputation.
10 THINGS YOU CAN DO TO PREVENT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
1. Teach children good safety habits while walking to and from school and playing in the
neighborhood. Insist on knowing at all times where your kids are, whom they are with, and what
they are doing.
2. Get involved. Volunteer to help in anti-crime and other neighborhood and community
improvement efforts. Encourage groups you belong to (such as religious, civic, and social) to
help stop crime.
3. Use common-sense tips to reduce your risk of being a crime victim. Stay in well-lighted, busy
areas; travel with a friend if possible;walk in a confident, assured way. Avoid known trouble
spots.
4. Report crimes and suspicious activity to police; agree to testify when necessary. Stand up for
what you believe in if you want a safe community.
5. Get to know your neighbors and agree to look out for each other. Get organized; work with the
police. 6. Find ways to settle arguments without violence. If you resort to violence to settle
disputes, this is what you teach your children. Be a good role model.
7. If you own a firearm, remember that your obligations as a responsible owner include training
in firearms safety, safe storage, and careful handling within the laws of your state and local
jurisdiction.
8. Use common courtesy. It helps ease tensions that can result in violence. Teach kids that good
manners are important.
9. Don’t carry illegal weapons, buy stolen property, use illegal drugs, or engage in other criminal
activity. It’s the wrong message to send a child.
10. Make sure your children know safe places to go when they are scared or need help. And
make sure they know where you are and how to reach you. Have them memorize or carry with
them important phone numbers.
CONCLUSION
The truth behind domestic violence is a complex and often harrowing reality that
affects individuals and families worldwide.
Domestic violence is a pervasive and deeply troubling issue that impacts
individuals, families, and communities worldwide. Here are some key conclusions
drawn from understanding this complex phenomenon:
1. Universal Problem: Domestic violence transcends geographic, cultural, and
socio-economic boundaries. It affects people of all ages, genders, sexual
orientations, and backgrounds.
2. Multi-faceted Impact: The consequences of domestic violence extend
beyond physical injuries to include psychological trauma, emotional distress,
and long-term mental health issues for victims and sometimes children who
witness it.
3. Cycle of Abuse: Many abusive relationships follow a cyclical pattern
characterized by tension-building, acute violence, and reconciliation (often
termed the honeymoon phase). This cycle can be difficult to break without
intervention.
In conclusion, addressing domestic violence requires a holistic approach that
prioritizes safety, support, and prevention. It is a societal issue that demands
collective responsibility and action to create lasting change.
STUDENT REFLECTION
I have learned many things throughout the semester. I can say “The truth behind
domestic violence” is about understanding the intentions and emotion behind the
information, we also need to listen and gain full meaning of what others say or
convey to us and make them feel that we are hearing them and also understanding
them. Yes, it is about more than exchanging information.
