UNDERSTANDING Belief in zombies, also known as the “living dead” of the black religion voodoo, may be
based on the fact. In 1983, Wade Davis, a Canadian scientist from Harvard University, reported
that he had actually met Haitian zombie known as Louis Ozias. Ozias claimed that he had been
certified dead at a US- run hospital on Haiti. After he had been buried, he was dug up and made
to work as a slave on a far plantation for two years. He managed to escape only after his master

had died.

Davis believes that Ozias and other zombies are not products of magic but of powerful
natural drugs known to voodoo initiates. The drugs, administered as a series of complex and
INFERRING, IMPLYING,

One type is called tetrodoxin which is obtained from puffer fish. It is known to induce paralysis
and other symptoms which are part of the zombie legend. It is worth noting that the zombie
symptoms are very similar to victims of puffer poisoning in Japan. Puffer fish are eaten as delicacy
in Japan, and there are several recorded cases of victims being pronounced dead and then
reviving. In one case, reported in 1880, a gambler who was poisoned after eating puffer fish was
CONTEXT CLUES revived to life in a mortuary stone seven days after being declared dead. According to Davis,
tetrodoxin is an exceptionally potent anesthetic, 160,000 times stronger than cocaine.

The second group of drugs is known to enhance physical strength, which is probably the

reason why a new zombie needs to be tied up and be beaten to be subdued. These drugs are
derived from the toad species Bufo marinus.
